Big League Stew - MLB

Charlie Manuel named his starting pitcher for Game 1 of the World Series.

Not surprisingly, Manuel is calling on Cliff Lee(notes).

The Phillies starter for Game 2, however, remains a mystery. Manuel has yet to commit, which indicates to Phillies.com writer Todd Zolecki that he's leaning toward Pedro Martinez(notes).

Keep leaning that way, Uncle Cholly, keep leanin'.

Not only does Martinez gives the Phillies their best chance to beat the Yankees, having him pitch in the Bronx is awesome theater. Other than the Series ending in a seventh game, it ratchets up the spectacle of Yankees-Phillies like no other possibility.

It's not like we're all waiting to see how Miguel Cairo(notes) will be received during player introductions at Yankee Stadium.

Pedro in the Bronx Zoo is a spectacle by himself.

Despite what happened in the 2004 ALCS against the Red Sox, Yankees fans might be under the impression that their team is still Pedro's daddy (with respect to Pablo Martinez, who died last year). At a time when the Empire's confidence is at its highest point in a decade, Martinez can take his relationship with the Yankees (paternal or otherwise) to a new place.

Please, oh please, Charlie Manuel. Make this happen.

A couple of weeks ago, Cole Hamels(notes) would have seemed a natural choice to start Game 2, or even the opener. Hamels' uneven performance in the regular season, plus his increased struggles in the playoffs, gives Manuel a lot of doubt.

Manuel might also be thinking about using J.A. Happ(notes) because he's a lefty, which might help neutralize lefties in the New York lineup and the short porch at the New Stadium. What is it, 299 down the line?

Happ's first start of the season came at Yankee Stadium, in fact. He pitched well, too, though the Phillies lost the game (Brad Lidge(notes) — bad!) after he left.

Well, Yankee Stadium in May is one thing and Yankee Stadium in October is another. No reason to subject a youngster such as Happ to that.

Like Happ, Hamels also had a good start in the same interleague series in New York. Toss it. Hamels is scrambled right now. Trying to get Hamels right in Yankee Stadium? Pitching coach Rich Dubee is only a man.

Besides, waiting until Game 3 to use Hamels gives the Phillies two extra days to find the socks and sandals-wearing dad from the New Era commercial.

He's the only one who's ever understood Cole, anyway.

I'd rather see Pedro start game two so he does not have to swing a bat when they get back to Philly.

Jeff Passan is an idiot. Sorry - it's off topic, but it needs to be said. DB is a good man. The Yankees will still be Pedro's daddy. Go Dodgers!

I'd rather see Pedro pitch game 3 at The Bank, with 46,000 Philly phaithful behind him.
And Cole will be just fine. Even when he's off, the Phils score 8-9 runs, so what's the issue here?

Pedro for game two! No doubt about it!!!
    @ "dodge" post # 3
I hope you're right about Cole! But I can't say I share your confidence, my friend. Cole's face even looks different this year. Many of his physical and facial cues point to an uneasiness about him, a sort of doubt in his mind. No uneasiness about Pedro though. When he's relaxed, it's obvious. When he's focused, it's equally as obvious!

Whats to say Charlie doesnt use Lee in Game 1 and Game 4 just like the Yanks will do with CC?
I'd rather see Pedro pitch against Pettite cuz thats just classic.
AJ vs Cole is another good matchup.
This series is gonna be better then people think.

#2 I agree with you 100% that Passan is a complete idiot. He looks like he never played baseball, and if he did it was JV highschool ball and he rode the pine pony. This series is going to be a good one but the Phillies are going to close it early in 6. They are just the better all around team.

I grew up watching the Yanks on Channel 11 with the Scooter and Bill White...and I also grew up watching the Phils on Prism and Channels 29 or 57. The Yanks made me so happy in the 90s but after they moved to the YES network I gravitated to the Phils more because they were so bad you couldnt help but pull for them. Now they are the 2 best teams in baseball and I couldnt be more proud. I will be rootin for the Phils because it would be good for baseball if they could repeat. Baseball DESPERATELY needs a team other than Boston or New York for people to like and who better than those Never Say Die Phils..either way I win.

It will be good to see and beat Pedro.....the Yankees have owned him since his days with the Blo Sux...If he pitches in game 2 - it will be win number 2 for the Yankees. Maybe old Zimmmer will come back and get Pedro in a headlock...lol.

I'm a yankee fan and respect the phils. Our fan territories do intersect in new jersey, so this should be a doubly fun series and I expect good showings from both teams. With that being said though, I'm perplexed at the comments here saying the phillies are a more complete team and will win in 6? Not sure which teams your comparing here, but the Yankees have the edge. Not a dominating edge mind you, but a slight one... and Las Vegas agrees with me. I wish you Philly fans luck, but keep in mind we are NOT Tampa Bay.

I've been thinking about this myself and wondering why it isn't talked about more often. It would be amazing to see. Pedro in the Bronx. And he wouldn't have to pitch in Philly and bat.
