Big League Stew - MLB

Pat Burrell has played all nine of his Major League seasons in Philadelphia. Some have been up, some have been down, but never has one involved a trip to the NLCS

Well, until now. Thanks in large part to Pat's bat, the Phillies are going back to the NLCS for the first time since Lenny Dykstra, John Kruk and Co. took the city by storm in 1993. Spray the 'Wiz, ring the Liberty Bell, whatever,

Despite going 0-for-the-first-three-games of the NLDS, Burrell went 3-for-4 with two HRs and four RBI in Sunday afternoon's 6-2 victory over the Brewers in Milwaukee.

"As long as I've been here with the organization and to see where we've come, to get to this point and have to have gone through," Burrell long-windedly said after the game. "It makes it all worthwhile."

The win gave the Phillies a three games to one victory in the NLDS and prevented the series from returning to Philadelphia for a Game 5 on Tuesday night.

Instead, the Phillies will open the NLCS against Los Angeles with Game 1 against Los Angeles on Thursday and will have ace left-hander Cole Hamels on the mound with seven days rest.

If you're of a certain age and experiencing some deja vu after seeing this NLCS matchup, you're not losing your mind. The Phillies and Dodgers have met three previous times with the World Series on the line with Philadelphia prevailing in '83 while the Dodgers advanced in '77 and '78.

Though disappointed with the loss (and no doubt, the defeat of the Packers as well), the Miller Park crowd immediately showered the Brewers with applause in appreciation for the team's first playoff appearance since the 1982 American League champion squad.

As a Phillie fan who remembers the last time the Phils went to the World Series, I honestly think this year's team is leaps and bounds better than the '93 team, which was excellent in itself.
To #3, if you remember, CC Sabathia was the best pitcher in the NL after arriving in Milwaukee, and he was manhandled in Game 2. If the rest of Philly's offense wakes up, there will be no stopping them.

cc was not manhandled. myers actually should have been called out on strikes in the 4th pitch curve ball of the at bat for out number 3 and a one-run ballgame. victorino put a good swing on the ball and deserves credit, but it never should have been set up. that being said, the phillies are definitely dangerous and have as good of shot as anybody at winning this thing...

Bottem line is this both teams are in and both teams swept the opposing team in a four game series this year. this should be an interesting series i really hope the phillies can pull it out. utley and howard do need to get it going, if burrell starts hitting again then the dodgers are forced to pitch to howard, who had like 8 walks against the brewers, most intentional.

I live in Milwaukee and watched our biased broadcast... CC was manhandled. Extra Base Hits all over the place. He got Jacked by a little man who isn't even a home run hitter.

Pat "The Bat" is back in the groove, which means bad news for the Dodgers. The Phils are hitting well top to bottom, so Howard and Utley both don't have to find thier stroke just one of them.

The Phillies and Dodgers played eight games this year, all of them after Ramirez was traded to the Dodgers. The Philies lost all 4 at Dodger Stadium in August and then won all four at Citizens Bank in September. This fact alone, should herald for an exciting series. The only difference is that the Phillies starting pitching has never been better and Moyers will come back after an unusual sub-par performance. Phillies in 6. Phillies have home field advantage, that will also be a factor.

Dodgers starting pitching has never been better either. Utley isnt hitting. I dont know how Howard is doing. Dodgers relievers are doing great, even with Saito out. Dodger stadium is a pitchers park, so good luck with those Philly Home Runs. They just wont happen. That means the Phillies will have to play some real baseball and actually score with a home run.
    Should be a fun serious!!!
    Who ever pitches better wins!!!

Sick of hearing that the phils "hitter friendly" park is the only reason they score runs......109 Home runs @ CBP and 105 on the road..........FOUR MORE HOME RUNS make the park easy? Ha...keep making excuses, as we STILL jack them out! Game over.... Phils in 6

All of a sudden the Dodger fans forget about a 4 game sweep in LA WITH Manny in the line-up against thier "best" pitchers!! lmao......talk away all you want to but in the end the Phils are gonna rock that azz! Show LA who the #1 offense is for a reaason. I think that even too many Phils fans are giving LA too much credit with a 6 game series....it's gonna be a SWEEP by the Phils...or maybe Phils in 5. Dodgers barely even won in a division that absolutely sucked! Now all of a sudden they are the best?!?!!?! get real!

The Dodgers seem to have momentum right now. The Phillies pose more problems to the Dodgers pitching because of Phils left handed bats. I give the edge to L.A. because of Torre, Mattingly and Manny. The playoff experience the Dodgers have will be the difference!
    GO DODGERS!!!!

Whoa whoa whoa settle Philly! The Dodgers are the best team in the N,L. right now. And Im not saying that cuz I am a Dodger fan, but cause they are. Theyre pitching just held the team with the best record in the N.L. of 97 wins and that same team with the most runs during the regular season-855 to be exact. And the young Dodger bats are swinging!!! Not to mention the fact that Manny has created somewhat a change of scenery.... GO Dodgers!!! Think Blue!!!

I'm not giving the dodgers to much credit but you gotta look at a couple of things 1 they got a manager who has been to the show before, plus they got manny who seems to explode during the playoffs like him or not. i will take my phillies anyday of the week over the dodgers but you got to respect them, just for the simple fact of when the playoffs come, all of those regular season stats go out the window. but i will say this to many people think that the phillies can't hit on the road, look at today we hit more homeruns at miller park then we did in citizens bank park. plus we have a great road record. we get no respect, i ilike it that way. go phillies

You do all realize that the Dodgers are from the NL West, right? It's easier to win 97 games with 3 ex-champion Red Sox on your team against the worst division in baseball.
