Big League Stew - MLB

As someone who doesn't get overly thrilled or excited over arbitration news, I'm happy to see that only 24 players were offered it before last night's deadline. Mostly because it means we'll only have to fret over whether two dozen guys will accept the offers —  and most of the lucky oat-sowers surely won't — before the Dec. 7 deadline.

You know who probably isn't happy to see clubs not getting clingy at the last moment, though? Guys like the Phillies' Pat Burrell. Once thought to be a surefire arb recipient, Burrell was informed on Monday that the Phillies weren't going to take the risk of having him find a dry market for outfielders and then come back to the Phils at an increased price they aren't willing to pay.

Here's one of the smartest takes I've read on the lack of arbitration offerings this season.

The Phillies are not alone in this free agent tactic. As one reader put it "The fact that so many teams refused to offer arbitration to their pending FAs tells me that many teams see significantly reduced revenue for 2009 and they do not want to risk high arbitration awards just to secure additional draft picks. In an uncertain economy, with the possibility of decreased revenues, and very tight money, additional investment in a high risk, longterm return draft pick does not look quite so attractive." [Beerleaguer]

Might this be another harbinger for some cautious baseball belt-tightening for '09?

Question #1: When the Braves shipped Mike LHampton to the Astros on Monday, was he packed in bubble wrap? Question #2: After receiving his new free agent via UPS, did Astros GM Ed Wade look at the "Fragile" stamped on the box and say, "Must be Italian?" [Bugs & Cranks]

this is a ridiculous take on why there are less players being offered arbitration. They aren't worried about decreased revenues.

i agree. perhaps for some teams. but for the phillies? no way are the phils going to make less next year than they did this year. unfathomable that they don't see a large increase in revenue after the world series.
there is no excuse for the phils not giving arb to moyer or burrell. they are and have always been a cheap organization, and a world series will not change that. the phillies just gave up potentially 4, most likely 2, compensatory picks. inexcusable.

Other than the fact that Burrell isn't very good, (managed 7 HR and hit .191 over the last 2 months of the season) and would be extremely overpriced, you're right. No excuse.

You're kidding me right? Pat has been a cancerous tumor to my Phillies. I'm one of the biggest Phillies Phans you'll find (and no, not just because they're world champs), and even I don't want him back.

Rest in peace, Mr. Rogers. Thank you for everything you did for the Blue Jays.
I only hope that the worsening recession doesn't make your team an easy choice for contraction.

Come on, over $5.5 million for a 46 year old pitcher. I do not blame the Phils for passing on ARB. Take the $8 million Moyer surely would have gotten and invest it in a younger starter or two. If Moyer, would except $3 million and incentives sign him. As for Pat, there are alot of capable left fielders available, I know 30 HRs and 90 RBIs are good numbers but in Citizens Ballpark they are attainable by many of the left fielders on the market. The Phils need more speed and less strikeouts from left field. Shore up the catching, and keep the bench players and Bullpen, the Phils will be World Champs again next year.
