Big League Stew - MLB

Adios, Tex.

The Red Sox, thought to be the leaders in the horse race for Mark Teixeira, apparently will not sign the free agent at any cost.

Or, at least the cost Scott Boras wants.

After hearing in a Dallas meeting with Boras about offers other teams apparently have made for Teixeira, Red Sox owner John Henry says in an e-mail: "It seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."

In other words, neigh!

Yahoo! Sports' Gordon Edes has the story, which adds that the Angels, Orioles and Nationals also made offers to Teixeira, who is 28 and regarded as the top dog on the free-agent market.

Update: Scott Boras has e-mail, too! He wrote Y! Sports' Tim Brown, who then forwarded the message (along with a hilarious quiz about "getting to know your friends at Christmas") to Gordon.

Oh, and below, Boras says this about Teixeira:

"The Boston ownership was kind enough to request and travel to meet with Mark Teixeira. While it was a very positive meeting, Mark was candid and advised he is in the process of making a decision and is now attempting to eliminate teams."

The Red Sox put up a $160-plus million offer over eight seasons but, an unnamed Boston executive says, Boras' wishes for a $200-million, 10-year deal is "ridiculous."

Oh, sure. A $160-million deal that averages $20 million a season is reasonable, but add a couple more years at the same rate and we cross the line of fiscal sanity?

The Red Sox don't have a backup plan, in terms of major free agents, if Teixeira goes elsewhere. So Boston would just have to compete with David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia and so forth.

Meanwhile below, here's what the Nationals opening-day lineup would look like with Teixeira (plus another free agent*) in it:

2B — Orlando Hudson*

SS — Cristian Guzman

3B — Ryan Zimmerman

1B — Mark Teixeira

CF — Elijah Dukes

RF — Josh Willingham

LF — Lastings Milledge

C — Jesus Flores

P — John Lannan

Hmm. It makes me want to watch the Nationals.

digg delicious

The more I hear about Boras, the more surprised I am that baseball has not done something about him.

It's hard not to believe that with the Red Sox out, the Yankees already spending a massive amount of money on Sabathia and AJ that the Angels wouldnt be the frontrunner's for Tex. Some team apparently is willing to spend more money then Boston - Baltimore had a 7 year deal, and unless Nationals have a insane offer i am thinking its Anaheim.

Why would he want to play in that dump anyway? He has too much class and intelligence to consider becoming a member of the "Chimp Crew". 10 years wallowing in the filthy dugout with a bunch of Psychos. Between Yukipuss & Jhonny P. he'll be a head case in a year or two. Better off with the Nats or Angels where they have class organizations and loyal, not bandwagon, fans.

Red Sox don't want Teix. If they pay him he will actually show up everyday and play. Boston likes to pay guys like Drew, Ortiz, and Lowell. Guys that like to half the season off and STILL get paid. Meanwhile they run HOF out of town like MANNY RAMIREZ. It's really sad.

the only way the bosox will still consider tex is if the angels offer is the same or less than theirs, and the nats don't cough up the 10 yr 200mil contract. if the angels and nats fail to meet the expectations of boras, he'll fall back and call the redsox for a chance at a title. sorry angel fans, but it ain't happenin again anytime soon. besides, it's not like the redsox are a crappy team without tex. had lowell, beckett, ortiz, drew, etc been 100% last postseason, they likely beat the rays and kill the phils and repeat.

gale that might be the most ridiculous paragraph i've ever read. all 3 you names were injured, all 3 are all-stars. yeah, manny's great but he QUIT ON THEM. if he'd of played like he did when he got to the dodgers, he'd still be in a boston uniform but instead he decided to cry and quit on his team.

160mil or 200mil, that's more than a few countries' GDP. suck up those balls, stop haggling for more, and just play ball.

this is just john henry callin boras' bluff. Boras probably told him in the meeting that he has some huge offer from some other so if the sox want him they would have to match it. By doing this the sox are saying ok, prove it. Lets see if this offer even exists because with the sox out of it if there is some huge offer tex would no doubt take it. The sox dont want to bid against themselves. That is the key to this situation. They think they have the best offer and the most to offer, so they will not raise their bid any higher. I think we all need to wait and see what happens tomorrow. I would not be surprised at all if the headline reads tomorrow " Red sox sign teixeira to 8 year 184 million dollar contract despite owner saying that they were out of the running."

Whoever has the last dollar wins. There will no discount to go to Boston. Manny stood up to Boston last year and now Teix is. Everyone said he wouldn't go to the Nationals or Baltimore but that may become reality. Please don't go to Boston Teix. Ask Manny how it feels to carry a team for 1/2 a season, win 2 rings, ask for a little job security, then get shown the door. Here's to Boston having no class and always paying the wrong players. And to my previous comment, I forgot SCHILLING. How many games did he play last year and he how much money did he STEAL???? Yeah Manny's a bad guy.OK.

I still say the best place for Tex is Anaheim. Team is usually playoff bound from the get-go, now if they can figure out there offensive woes. Tex would be a big help-- but need some other production as demonstrated in the 08 playoffs. No need to say Anaheim is a much different environment then Boston & NY. . Scratching my head on the nationals, why isnt any money going to starting pitching?? I mean the 2 guys that are slated to be your opening day starting pitcher both had losing records in '08.

    Shawn A;
I agree that Boras is the problem. He is asking way too much for all his players. $200 mil for Texiera, that's almost as much as the Yanks paid for Sabathia and Burnett. Truly insane. 75 Million for Lowe, 40 Million for Veritek. The man is playing some serious high ball. With the country in serious financial meltdown, most teams would have to sell off a couple farm clubs and trade off their top talent to afford his salary in a couple of years. Thats not just crazy, it's criminally insane. Why the Sox are even dealing with him at all is a mystery. He was involved in the ARod fiasco, screwed them on Damon demanding 65 mil then accepting 51 mil from the Yankees. He almost blew the Dice K deal until the player himself chose honor over BS.
But Boras is not the only problem, it is almost every agent out there. The Braves a signed Terms Sheet, the modern equivalent to a handshake closing to Furcal's agent only to have Furcal sign with the Dodgers. It goes on and on. The agents are so unethical these days that the teams should start suing and boycotting the worst offenders.
As it is Baseball is about to undergo some serious downsizing like the rest of the economy, attendance will not be as much an issue as Advertising, and cable contracts..... as sponsors dry up, Think BIG Three Auto, are Bought Out, Think King of Beers, or just cut their ad budgets, that revenue stream will become a trickle and the first place that the average American will look to cut costs will be cable TV......Look for some providers to go belly up and others move to re-negotiate all their contracts most obvious WGN, TBS, NESN, Yankee Network, etc.
The money for these players may not be there. Period.

    Gale,
ManRam was a cancer in the clubhouse and played when he wanted to play. He's a baby and a primadonna. HOFer or not, let Manny be Manny somewhere else. Even without the trade, who's to say he wouldn't have whined his way out of the lineup during the playoffs. Good for Boston.

    This is a bluff contest.
If Teixiera seriously wants to go to Baltimore or Washington for more bucks, let him. He'll be lucky to be on a team over .500 during his contract, will never makes the playoffs and and will have no lineup protection, which will kill his stats and a chance to sign a bigger contract (if he gets an opt out clause).
Then again, he could end up with the Angels.

Gale, you sound a little jaded.
Schilling stole money? For everything Schilling did in 2004-2006, he was worth it. And Schilling's shoulder was the issue. They tried to heal it without surgery and it didn't work. Get a clue.

LOL when did Manny carry the team? Maybe in between tantrums when we wouldn't play? The Sox had to call Manny's bluff that there was NOTHING wrong with his knees (remember the MRI's?). Same thing with Nomar and Pedro. Yeah it was tough seeing them leave at the time. What have either done since? Boston was smart to let them walk. Let Manny walk, he's not worth the headaches.

This is why I stopped being a Red Sox fan. I admit I'm fairweather and there is nothing wrong with that. The Red Sox continue to pass on great players like Ramirez and Tex, but continue to give huge money to over the hill non-productive guys. If you look towards the future inthe next couple of seasons it isn't good. This team isn't getting younger and the free agent classes are going to be weak. Why not spend now??? Maybe they just care about the money now and making a profit. That is the opposite of the Yankees. They understand you have to spend money to make money. Have fun with Lowell,Ortiz, drew, Ellsbury, on the DL and no catcher and Wakefield as your 5th starter. And don't tell me about prospects. Ellsbury was and is a prospect and where was he against the Angels??? On the bench.Theo's magic is wearing off and it will reflect when the Red Sox don't win for another 90 years. It's time for RED SOX NATION to learn a little something called RESPECT!!!!
