Big League Stew - MLB

As I initially suspected he might, 70-year-old Hall of Fame vote holder Corky Simpson has publicly chalked up not voting for Rickey Henderson to a few convenient — if not understandable — excuses.

To wit, the former Tucscon Citizen writer is old, he didn't give due diligence and he's also just a bit batty.

Let's go to his MLB-a-Culpa, shall we?

From the Oakland Tribune:

"If I had properly researched the situation, I would have voted for Rickey Henderson if for no other reason than he played for nine ball teams," he said. "Imagine that. He'll be the first Hall of Famer to have a bronze bust with nine caps stacked on his head.

"He was a wonderful player and I simply goofed. I voted for eight deserving men. I could have picked two more — and I wish to heck I had."

The best part, of course, is the "if for no other reason than he played for nine ball teams," a line that should have Mike Morgan dusting off his resume since he played for 12 different teams. Also, it should be noted that when a co-worker pointed out that he had left Rickey off the ballot, Simpson said he "wasn't a Rickey guy and that he would vote for him next time."

To paraphrase a line from my boss this morning: "Save us, FJM. You're our only hope."

UPDATE 1/12: Rickey's induction is now official and it turns out that Simpson wasn't the only writer to leave Rickey off his ballot. Henderson received 94.8 percent of the vote, meaning that 27 others didn't think the all-time runs and steals leader should get into the Hall of Fame on his first try.

UPDATE 1/12:  Mr. Simpson did an interview with the Columbia Journalism Review and here's what he had to say over the Internet outrage that resulted over his vote: "I think of the literature on the Internet in the same way that I think of the literature on the walls of public bathrooms ... With the exception that the literature on the walls of public bathrooms is a little higher class."

Between this Simpson guy and the Milwaukee sportswriter who voted Pujols 7th on his MVP ballot, perhaps there ought to be an annual baseball competency exam for voters of high-profile awards. Corky Simpson's got corked bats in his belfry!

Hall of Famers Goose Gossage and Hoyt Wilhelm both played for nine teams, meaning that Corky didn''t do the research during his apology about not doing proper research.

Hey #1,Can't we all just get along....Need I say more...........Ya like Milton Bradley will top 9 hats in his career and he'll never be considered for HOF,because it's stats not hats...............Goose you could say played on 10 teams,Yankees twice and the same for Hoyt, braves twice....same organization years apart makes it a different team..............So Mr "Cant we all just get along",all you say is "need I say more" that's because you've got nothing to say,so please stop wasting our time, because people like #5 and others who do their homework and check stats before they blog makes this blog worth while......Corky what's his name who didn't vote for Rickey has been pinning blue ribbons on prized hogs for the last 30 years should lose his right to vote for the HOF,Rickey deserved 1st and 100%

If he couldn'r remember enough about what Rickey Henderson did in his career, how does he still have a vote? Can someone explain the criteria for getting a vote if this guy has one?

I keep hoping all of this stuff happening will force Mottram to break the bank and hire Ken Tremendous. Don't worry, 'Duk, you can keep your job. KT will just handle all of the FJM type stuff.

As I guy with over 900 unique cards of his, several comic books, and having eaten lunch with him back in the 80s . . . Let's just say, the difference between 100 and 99.9 is huge.
Okay, those of us from the 80s were blessed with Ozzie Smith, Mike Schmidt, Nolan Ryan, and all the others (no dis to Gwynn, Boggs, or Puckett!). But Rickey is Rickey--there had been no other and will be no other.
Ty Cobb made professional baseball competitive.
Babe Ruth made professional baseball American (in most of its senses).
Jackie Robinson made professional baseball availabe to all (to cover the rest of what Ruth did not).
Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale made professional baseball classy.
Rickey Henderson? Yeah, Rickey made professional baseball fun . . . again, again, and again.
Huge difference between 100 and 99.9.

This is why you don’t give 70 year olds the privilege to vote. They are too far out of touch and apparently cannot handle their own due diligence. Corky Simpson you're a disgrace to the voters who hold such an honor. Someone like Corky could be the one vote that screws someone out of their rite of passage to the HOF.

What a joke. Most runs, walks, stolen bases and leadoff homeruns. That probably deserves the HOF... Some of these voters need to get over themselves.

Just goes to show you the state of the game.... I was under the impression that in order to vote you needed to do the research before you placed the vote... Time to get new people on board for the voting, well at least someone who does the appropriate research!!!!

I lost respect for baseball with the last strike. With all of the money for these guys for doing what the rest of us do on the weekends and night time softball leagues after "earning" our livings by working our tails off, poor Ricky can just deal with not being a unanimous first ballot pick. Put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame and they might get some of my respect back.
