Big League Stew - MLB

Let me start by saying that at no point in my life did I ever think I would gladly pay $7.75 for a slightly-oversized bucket of french fries and a small cup of accompanying dip.

But as I prepare to acquire some sustenance for what may be a long championship night in the Citizens Bank Ballpark, I would not blink an eye if they told me that Chickie's and Pete's famous Crab Fries now cost a cool twenty.

Seriously, I feel like a Pilgrim that was just shown how to make popcorn by the natives for the first time. Why did no one ever tell me about these Crab Fries before? Why are they not serving these at restaurants around the nation? Why isn't Philly known more for these instead of their cheesesteaks, pretzels and Tastykakes?

(Admittedly all of those are also awesome but please continue riding along on my unbridled wave of enthusiasm for fried potatoes ...)

For those of you in other parts of the country who are still sadly in the dark, know that Crab Fries do not contain any actual crab meat. Yes, that threw me for a loop, too, but my disappointment disappeared as soon as I bit into my first fistful of fries. Simply seasoned with nothing more than Old Bay, they make me want to embark on a quest to rid the world of ketchup, the usual French fry passenger.

By browsing the Internet, I can find that several people enjoy easily making these fries at home, liberally sprinkling their Ore-Idas with Old Bay. So fret not, fellow Midwesterners, for I shall return bearing this recipe (much like when General Tso returned to America with his delicious chicken).

Now please excuse me while I go eat a few hundred more fried reasons to hit the gym upon my return.

digg delicious

I believe I did tell you about the crab fries, Duk. Just check out BLS's Big Ballpark Review on Citizen's Bank Park, second entry under 'Before and After the Game': "Chickie's and Pete's at 1526 Packer Avenue always serves up a good meal. Don't leave until you've tried the crab fries..."

That's why I knew I had to try them, Turtle! But outside of The Stew, I fear these delicious treats are not getting the press they so richly deserve.

I purposely did not eat at CBP so that I would have room for Pat's and Geno's after the game.
I wish I had tried the fries.
Might have to go back next season.

At first, I was a little skittish to try something with the word "crab" (due more to a bad experience with a crab cake and definitely not the other crab). However, after asking a server about the nature of these fries, I tried a plate. Needless to say, I was not disappointed! You are correct when you say these things are good! I tried the Ore-Ida/Old Bay method at home...while it is close, it just doesn't have the feel of the C&P Crab Fries! Good nevertheless!

Crab fries are the BEST! We bring all our friends to Chickie's and Pete's when they visit from out of town. When local friends know we're going to the ballpark, they ask if we are getting Crab Fries. The reason just adding Old Bay to fries does not have the same taste as the official ones? The cheese. No idea what's in THAT stuff, but it MAKES the Crab Fries!
Thanks for talking about one of Philly's best foods! You can also partake of this deliciousness at The Linc, if you venture into an Eagles game.

crab fries win the series every year, along with the super bowl and the presidential race and any other contest you can think of. whatever it is, the crab fries won it already.

Chickie's and Pete's crab fries are good, but not as good as garlic fries on the west coast. Give me Tony Luke's or Jim's cheesesteaks over the crab fries.

never eat the crab fries. They are Pollack fish not crab. Never eat a fish that continuosly swims to the left. They are fake crabs. If it swims to the left, talks to the left or leans to the left, Its a Liberal crab frie. Not to be confused with an American crab frie. It is not!,a muslim frie.

Being from Baltimore, Maryland Old Bay comprises a hefty 40 percent of my body mass. I've never had "crab fries" but I do know down here we've been coating our french fries in a healthy dose of old bay and malt vinegar for as long as I can remember.

Yeah, Chickie and Pete's Crab Fries are definitely slamming. Too bad the owners suck so hard. I wasn't admitted to one of their places (which is a sports bar, mind you) because: my baseball hat was on backwards. What kind of poop is that? A sports bar where you can't where a hat backwards. Being a true American, I voted with my feet and haven't been back since.

Gotta say, a HUGE disappointment regarding Chickie and Pete's is their charging $70 cover to get into their bar for the game tonight! They only give you a $30 food credit with that! How disgustingly greedy. People would go in and buy drinks and eat anyway. Did they really need to do this? I am going to be experimenting with fries at home and perfect their recipe (which I'm sure is fairly simple) and share it with the world. So disappointed in them...

Welcome to the Mid-Atlantic Region. Crab fries are nothing new here. At most fairs, carnivals and in many restaurants and bars you will find crab fries. And if you can only find regular fries just ask, they will bring you a shaker of Old Bay. Here's another delicious Old Bay idea. Wings --- fried and then as soon as they are out of the fryers sprinkled with Old Bay. Add a beer and your set.

Agree with #11 and #18, anyone from the mid-atlantic, especially Maryland as I am, considers Old Bay to be a very normal seasoning for fries, and plenty of other things. Interestingly, the fried chicken chain Bojangles also uses an Old Bay-like seasoning on thier fries.

OMG, you missed the whole essence of the crab fries.....the "dip" on the side is melted American Cheese, as best we can tell and it MAKES the fries....they are awesome with that. In fact Chickie and Petes (at the restaurants) serves an order of fries with TWO sides of the melted cheese for dipping because one was no where near enough.
I can honestly say that Chickie and Petes crab fries, no matter which location you get them, are the best fries i have ever had in my 40 years of life !!
Ooooh and pouring Old Bay over just ANY fries is not the same, especially nasty McDs fries.....these fries are crispy and awesome EVERY time.
