Big League Stew - MLB

The Phillies-Brewers NLDS game is currently airing head-to-head with the Falcons-Packers tilt, a conflict that gives rise to a great question: Which game are the Cheeseheads with no remotes or motivation to drag two TVs into the same room watching today?

If last Sunday is any indication — a day when the Bucs-Packers ran up against the Brewers regular season finale — it won't be close.

From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

The Green Bay Packers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers game Sunday on WITI-TV (Channel 6) had a rating of 32.3 or 287,793 households. A total of 57% of the sets on at the time were tuned to that game.

Opposite the Packers telecast was the Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers last regular-season game, which the Brewers won, and coupled with a loss by the New York Mets, allowed the Brewers to advance to the playoffs as a wild card team.

The rating for the Brewers-Cubs game was 13.2 or 117,612 households with a 22% of the sets on at the time tune to it. The game aired on FSN Wisconsin, a cable channel available to about 80% of all television households in the Milwaukee market.

True story: I just had lunch before the game in the Brewers pressbox dining room and the Packers-Falcons game was on the television above my table. A Japanese baseball writer asked one of the dining room workers to change it to the start of the Brewers-Phillies game, but was immediately made to regret even asking.  "Honey," she was told. "This is Wisconsin. Those are the Packers. We're not changing it. You can move to another television." Without a word, the writer quickly moved her things.

Of course, there isn't much going on in a loser state like Wisconsin other than the weak Packers.

I agree that the Packers are a big deal in Wisconsin, but the ratings of Packers vs. Brewers does not mean that more people desire to watch the packers rather than the brewers. Every Packer game, whether it is on cable or not, is shown on non-cable channels every week. The Brewers however, can only be seen on cable. If FSN became a normal channel instead of a cable channel, brewers ratings would skyrocket. I personally would have rather watched the brewers (who made it to the playoffs after a 26 year drought) than watch the packers play the Falcons, but I had to work. They should not only include ratings of television when comparing the two, but also the radio, and if that were the case, I think it would have been a lot closer of a margin.
