Big League Stew - MLB

It's been a relatively quiet afternoon — Arthur Rhodes to Florida, yawn — but we still have about 45 minutes left on the non-waiver trading period. The Manny three-way deal is said to be dead (though maybe not), so there stands a good chance we'll have to remember this year for all the trades (Sabathia, Harden, Teixeira, Pudge, etc.) that occurred before Deadline Day came around.

We'll see.

However, I don't think it's too early to crown a winner for Silliest Trade of the Season and that one goes to Houston Astros GM Ed Wade and Co., who traded 22-year-old prospect Matt Cusick for 35-year-old middle reliever LaTroy Hawkins on Wednesday, so that his team might compete better for the NL Central title.

Did I mention the 'Stros are 13.5 games behind the Cubs?

And that Hawkins had already been DFAed by the Yanks?

And that they already pointlessly added Randy Wolf?

Predictably, Houston fans are not pleased.

From The Astros Dugout:

"I just love it when my baseball team is one of the national laughingstocks. Like I keep hearing how this team is supposed to have such great offense, but we’re 12th in runs scored in the NL.

"All I can say is that either (owner) Drayton McLane is seriously insane and he thinks this lousy team has a snowflake’s chance in heck of actually competing for something besides 4th place in the NL, or he figures that this is the only way to keep butts in the seats in the ballpark and keep the season ticket sales strong.

Sigh.

Wade explained the trade as a means to shore up the back end of the bullpen, but I'm still confused as to why a team with a double-digit standing deficit is attempting to be a buyer, not a seller.

Maybe Shawn Chacon did a little more damage than we thought?

I love my 'Stros, but being in the city of the 'Stros AA afilliate, they should have been trading and getting young talent. The farm system has been depleted by some other bonehead trades and the farm teams are getting beat up. Oswalt has been great, but they could have gotten some great prospects for him. Carlos can still knock in some runs. Tejada could of helped a number of teams. Berkman, well I would of hated to see him in another uniform, but if he goes the way of free agency, this team really should be kicking themselves.

Ed Wade is an F/N Buffoon. This guy when he was Phillies' GM picked up his paycheck with a gun and a mask. His nickname is Zippy the Chimp. I know 2nd graders that are smarter than Ed. He's lucky that it was Shaun Chacon who choked him out. I would have preferred that it would have been either of the 2 Phillies' Managers Jim "Bella" Fregosi or Larry Bowa. Wade is a total joke of a General Manager. I could have pulled a better trade out of my @$$ than what he has done in his sorry career.

Then you have the Rockets' GM following suit and trading away young talent and future prospects for a chance to win now. Maybe there is something in the water down here that GM's don't like young 20-year olds. . .

    @ Greg M
    Artest Hawkins
Morey made a move to be a contender for a title. Wade made a move for a crappy reliever that we don't even need. Morey=good, Wade=very bad.

Now Houston fans know what Phils fans went through the last decade-plus.

Wade has to go. We have no young talent and we pick up these losers. Why are we giving up a young player for a pitcher that has been released. I still think the Jason Jenniings trade was the worst ever, but Ed is trying hard to out do that. Keep trying Ed maybe the Mets would be willing to deal Doc Gooden.

Hold on now guys, let's not rush to judgment here. Maybe LaTroy has more left in his tank than we think and he returns to his elite all-star closer form. Oh wait.

    This makes no sense.
Can they really say Hawkins and Wolf are part of their future?
WHat is the point of getting these guys, let alone trading prospects for them?

ANY pitcher is better than Wandy. I'd even take Mark Grace. Should have kept the youngster and GIVEN AWAY Rodriguez. That would improve the team infinitely.

McLane, surely you are not part of this stupidity???? Moves like Wolf & Hawkins continue to make you the alughing stock of baseball. Dont get me wrong, I love my Stro's, but come on......can you please get a GM that is going to earn his money.....maybe you should hire a woman....they seem to have better judjement when it comes to spending money.
    Fire Wade already...

Why is Wade getting these pitchers now, he trading our best pitchers in the off season. Now he figures we need pitching. Garner era is over with. Houston does not have what it takes to overcome Cubs, Brewers and Cardinals. I understand that he might want to get the team ready for 2009. Who knows he might be trading most of our big Bats in the off season again.

The Wolf deal is partly defensible if you assume that Sampson isn't fit to be a major league starter. Hernandez and Cassel were just awful, But Hawkins? Why?

Wade is a total moron. It took Philly forever to finally get rid of the bum and it appears as though he is up to the same stupid tricks in Houston.
