Big League Stew - MLB

This and every weekday a.m., let's rise and shine together with the most recent and decent major league happenings. Today's Roll Call starts in New York, where the Gotham can swallow you whole if you're not careful. Felix Hernandez knows what it's like to be flying high in April and shot down in May. Let this be a cautionary tale in case YOU plan on visiting Metropolis.

Game of the Day: Mariners 5, Mets 2

Dearest Sir: Compliments of the season to you! Please allow me to introduce you to Mr. KING Felix Hernandez of the EMERALD CITY, a Right-Handed pitcher (RHP) for the Se-attle Mariners Base-Ball Club (TM) . I am writing in Respect to the Grandslamhomerun Mr. Hernandez hit ,that which scored Four (4) runs (USD) against the Very Respected Johan Santana Left-hand Pitcher (LHP) of the Nine Mets Squadron.

Fellow citizen: However, it also saddens me to also Report that Mr. Hernandez, like Mr. Santana a Resident of Venezuela, injured his Left ankle covering the Home Base and retired for the Night in the Fifth (5th) Inning. Mr. Santana, because of an error by Thirdbasemen (3BM) Mr. David wright of the U.S. ,allowed one (1) Earned run for Mr. Jerry Manuel, the Nine Mets Head Coach Who Gained power in bloodless coup against a Mr. Willie Randolph.

Kindness to you: I got your email while searching Privately for a Base Ball oriented party of interest. For more information on This Base-Ball game, a Unique opportunity which included the first Grandslamhomerun by a American League (AL) pitcher in thirty-seven (37) years (USD), please write me at my Private email Account. Mr. King Felix Hernandez plans to make his next Start, but will not be released to do so without your Checking Account number. Good Day!

Feelin Rundown (Monday's other games):

Brewers 4, Braves 1 — Ned Yost didn't even warm up anyone to relieve Ben Sheets, who pitched a four-hitter, had no walks and needed 106 pitches to finish (well, SURE — Chipper was sitting out). Yost was asked if Sheets might start the All-Star Game for the NL and he answered in affirmative that Sheets was the best pitcher in the majors. Bobby Cox said Sheets had the game's best curve; both managers confirmed Milwaukee had the finest cheese in any division, that Wisconsin bratwurst was the best "wurst," and that "Happy Days" jumped the shark when Fonzie jumped the shark.

D-backs 2, Red Sox 1Dan Haren and Josh Beckett definitely went for ice cream after this one. "He's a great pitcher," Haren said of Beckett. "I got to meet him last year at the All-Star game, and he's a nice guy. He was probably the guy I talked most to. He's got unbelievable stuff. When you ask guys in here, they haven't seen much stuff like that." Conversely, Beckett said of Haren: "He's tough. It doesn't matter who he's pitching against. There are a few pitchers in the big leagues today that I enjoy watching and pitching against ... Haren's obviously one of them."

Royals 8, Rockies 4 — Should the Royals just move to the NL? Mike Aviles has nine doubles already. KC has Ramirez flexibility; Horatio (Caine!) relieved Brian Bannister, and when that didn't go so great, Trey Hillman turned to Ramon, who finished off the Rox.

Angels 3, Nationals 2John Lackey lowered his ERA to 1.65, which is just too low. The guy's not Bob Gibson, for cry-aye. The Nats continue to soil the franchise that produced Bryn Smith.

I'd rather the $120M paid to Blowhan go towards buying cheap oil from Venezuela. What a joke. I want Carlos Gomez back.

Felix Hernandez, Congrats on the GSHR, Seattle Mariners anchors aweigh to go! The last good AL hitting pitcher in my memory was Jim Kaat of the Minnesota Twins. I've been out of the country since the DH was introduced to MLB for the AL. And if I was to take the time to look some stuff up, I think there are others. Anybody want to help me out with their favourite hitter from the mound?

The real travesty is that Felix couldn't go one more out to qualify for the win.

You're writing is horrible. I had to try and re-read the top story like 4 times before I could figure anything out. Wow, how do you have a job?

Thats why the NL needs to get rid of this ancient rule from the 1800s. Pitchers might hit a grand slam and then several innings later get hurt on a defensive play. One more reason why its time for the NL to move into the 21st century.

BTW, bosox150 makes me lol: "You're writing is horrible."=You are writing is horrible. Are you asking about his job because you need a second job to make up for all the money you lost winning the Burkina Faso National Lottery?

I know he didn't get the win, and agrandslamhomerun by a pitcher doesn't count in fb, but shouldn't Felix be considered in your list of freaks?

    How is Sheets 'the best'
Edinson Vólquez is having a better season and should be the starter. He has the best ERA, second most wins (and he plays on a horrible team), and the most strikeouts.
Ridiculous, and insulting, for it to be otherwise.

That intro was very clever. Nothing like a spam spoof. How has Sheets not seen the DL this year? OK by me

Can't anyone get hurt running the bases? Should we just have HR Derby? Quit being silly! The NL game provides more strategy. Nothing wrong with the NL rules for the most part. I like more offense with the DH however my proposal would be for both leagues to have the DH however you can only use the DH for the pitcher. That way you get more offense and keep the NL strategy part. Actually i heard that from Rick Hummel. Makes sense.
P.S a pitcher can get hurt just as easily while pitching. Players get hurt taking a bath nowadays.

Jab I dont get your reasoning for the NL DH. Felix proved the AL should let the pitchers hit with his grand slam...and he was injured while pitching, I'm pretty sure they do that in the AL. If you play the field you have to hit, that's baseball.

Mike W contradicted yourself. If you add the DH you lose the strategy, and of course you use it on the pitcher. Are you suggesting there is a team that would let the pitcher hit and DH for a position player? I think you owe Mr. Hummel an apology for butchering his idea, whatever it was.

Felix didn't get hurt running the bases, maybe Wang should hit with a little more power so he can just trot.

I think that steinbrenner is making a mountain out of a molehill. Baseball players get injured. It happens. He could have hurt his ankle covering first base. Get over it. You are paid millions of dollars, stop being a pansy.

DId you see the grand slam? Dude wasn't even looking when he swung and he even said he closed his eyes! He's a big boy, though, and i guess he can generate some pretty awesome power, considering what it takes to hit an opposite-field homer at shea.

Saro G, what do you expect from the guy? He has a 2.93 ERA and 95 K's in 107 IP and history suggests his best pitching is yet to come. Its not his fault your [profane]ty offense can't score runs for him. New York fans always look for a goat when their team is losing and it always starts with the best player. I guess you can look on the bright side though, you might wake up tomorrow and see that Santana was traded in the middle of the night.

Of course King Felix doesn't get a chance to hit the grandslamhomerun if Golden Boy David Wright fields the ball cleanly. But let's go ahead and blame "Blowhan"

Since I have both Sheets and Volquez, I hope its Volquez who starts the All-star game, because his 2nd loss was in relief and they were unearned runs! And Sheets is fragile enough already I really don't want to risk him suffering an injury. But nonetheless should I really be complaining?!

Read furiousgeorge's post. An opposite field grand slam. By a post-1970s AL pitcher.
And considering the Mets window is closed for a few years, I'd rather have an unpolished Gomez than waste what are supposed to be the last few good years of Blowhan.
