Big League Stew - MLB

This and every weekday a.m., let's rise and shine together with the most recent and decent major league happenings. Today's AL roll call starts on Florida's Gulf Coast, where three crowds of 30,000-plus at Tropicana Field watched a Major League Baseball team get swept over the weekend, and it wasn't the Tampa Bay Rays.

Game of the Day: Rays 3, Red Sox 0

Things some people don't believe in:

The Rays —They're in first place in the AL East after James Shields tossed a 2-hitter Sunday against the Red Sox for Tampa's 6th straight win.

UFOs — In March, the people of Capitola, Calif. were confronted by this craft. On its way back to the mothership, or to the model shop?

Miracles — Most of America believed in miracles (Yes!) in Feb. 1980, when the U.S. Olympic hockey team beat the Soviets and won Lake Placid gold. Has anyone picked up a hockey stick since?

The Rays — At 14-11, they're 3 games over .500 for the first time since 2002 — when they started 3-0 and finished a franchise-stinkiest 55-106.

Bigfoot — Harry and the Hendersons was big-time box gold 20 years ago; it even produced a TV show that made it big in Germany (of course it did). But how many buy Bigfoot as anything except a big, hairy, man?

Moon landing - There's a sect out there who think Apollo 11, etc, never set men on the lunar surface, that it was all done in a TV studio like the O.J. trial. You gotta love Buzz Aldrin for disagreeing.

The Rays - The Red Sox, who fell by 5 combined runs in the 3-game series, don't believe in the Rays. Josh Beckett's quotes — all "me, me, me" — do not give credit where it's due. "I basically lost the game for us," Beckett said, with manager Terry Francona adding, "We didn't ever get anything going offensively."

Leprechauns - Born of Irish folktales, the li'l faerie will grant you 3 wishes as long as you don't steal his lucky charms. Who knows, maybe Joe Maddon captured one and wished to be in first?

Lumberjacks - Oh, I'm lumberjack and I'm OK, I sleep all night and I work all day!

The Rays - The Bostons hit .173 in the series and made 3 errors to Tampa's none.

Loch Ness Monster - Underwater ally to some, Scottish crap to others!

Curses - Goats denied admission to ballgames and Broadway plays financed with Babe Ruth money take the place of mummies and voodoo dolls in modern baseball folklore. The Rays weren't cursed; they simply were bad. And, maybe they still are. But they do have Longoria locked up.

Feelin' Rundown (Sunday's other games)

Yankees 1, Indians 0 — Three words no ballplayer wants to hear: Dr. James Andrews. He is the man to whom Jorge Posada is heading for a shoulder look-see. Chien-Ming Wang just reached 5 wins. On the other side, C.C. Sabathia allowed a run over 8 and lowered his ERA to 7.88; kinda like when you make the monthly payment on a credit card and it only covers the interest.

White Sox 6, Orioles 1 — South Side fans will debate it for centuries; Who was slower — Paul Konerko or Robin Ventura? Konerko definitely starts slow. He came in batting .197 with 3 homers, but belted a pair against the O's.

Rangers 10, Twins 0Vicente Padilla pitched the first Rangers home shutout by a righty in nearly 7 years. They're also 7 games out of first already in the AL West. Cowboys open camp in about 11 weeks.

Blue Jays 5, Royals 2Scott Rolen has 4 RBIs in three games back, which would literally extrapolate to 216 in a season — as if Rolen, in any fairy tale, could last 162 games without breaking something.

Athletics 4, Mariners 2Emil Brown has 22 RBIs, which is 2nd in the AL — in case there was something else you wanted to add to the "I can't believe it" list.

Angels 6, Tigers 2Justin Verlander roughed up for 6 runs, 7 hits and 4 walks despite having, "good stuff," he said. Do you take the word of a man with a 6.50 ERA?

Photo of the Day: Gulliver's Travels — The Tribe Edition

"Yeah, uh, C.C., like, me and Martinez were thinking of getting a 3-on-3 team together and were wondering, you know, if you wanted to play and stuff? There's a trophy."

***

Fantasy Freak

James Shields (Rays) 9 IP, 2 H, BB, 7 K, Win

Possibly the second best-pitched game in majors this season.

***

Fantasy Flake

Livan Hernandez (Twins) 2 2/3 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 2 BB, Loss

Is it me, or has Livan never quite been the same since Leyland let him throw 143 pitches in one game and 142 in another during the 1997 postseason?

***

Big Talker

"It's nice ... if they hit. If they don't, it won't make a difference."  Tigers manager Jim Leyland, on having his entire lineup playing for the first time.

the switch has flipped for the rays. they have a lot of talent. the missing element was confidence and believing that they could go out on any night and beat any team. thats changed now.
the key will be the job done by joe maddon. the players are outplaying his managing, but there will come a time when he needs to keep the team together. veterans do this for a club, but the rays are young, even if many of them have been in the system for years. maddons ability to spark the teams confidence when the team hits a multigame losing streak will be critical, and im not sure he can pull it off.

    C.C. Sabathia: He's not a music factory, he's a pitching factory.

My family and I have been loyal fans of theirs for years and attend their home games regularly. We are happy to finally share in their excitement and enthusiasm. It's taken a couple of years, but I think they finally put together a young team that can no longer be brushed off as an easy win. I am not saying that they are going to take the division or win the world series by any means. But they are getting there. Keep your eyes open for these guys! It's one of the freshest looking 25 man rosters we have ever seen! WE LOVE THIS TEAM! GO RAAAAAYSSSS!

I was at the Saturday game when the Rays got the game winning Homer in the 8th inning to win 2-1 and the place was Electric, nothing better than going to a sold out stadium of 36,000 and sending the 20,000 Red Sox fan's shutting up and than on Sunday Chanting " 1ST PLACE RAYS, 3RD PLACE RED SOX"
    GO RAYS.

Its great to see the rays competing on such a low budget payroll but the season is still young i want to wait until the all star break to see if its more than early rust on the other teams in al east lets see if the rays pitching can maintain this for a couple of months

IT'S About time....... I followed the RAYS since moving here from Philadelphia 5 years ago. They were always an exciting team to watch. Now sweeping the Red Sox is great and everything , but we got a long way to go before we celebrate.

It's a lot like Man City in the Premiership this season... start out hot, but after a few months near the top, fall back to the middle of the table where they should be. Except in this case, Rays equal Derby County FC. They should be relegated. Crawford and Kazmir could be sent out on loan to someone in contention.
    Wow... that was weird.

I too moved to the area two years ago and adopted these boys. I have total faith in them and they are the team to beat this year! It doesn't take a lot of money to play the game and win...it just takes heart, and that we have plenty of! Go Rays, there are more people behind you than you know.

I could see this coming as a loyal Rays fan for the past 10 years. They have the best young pitching staff in the AL..........kind of reminds me of the Marlin staff that won the series. Good young hitting and very smart ownership. This fella is Cinderella.

no one here may believe me, but i have a $25 bet with my buddy down the hall that the Rays take the wild card this year and make the playoffs. they can only get better once kazmir gets back into the rotation, which will happen on may 3rd or 4th against non other than the BoSox. you can all call me crazy for saying that they'll make the playoffs for the first time, but i say next year's world series match-up is Rays/D-Backs. Each team has enough talent to sustain themselves for the next 4-8 years without getting the team salary over $100 million. And with the Rays new president, idk his name but he's fresh out of Goldman Sachs in NYC, he'll convince ownership to spend the $ necessary. oh, and by the way, Crawford and Upton will both go .300-30-30 this year, guarenteed :)

JB - take a walk troll. What is a "ban wagon"? "Wining" your world series? "Not mean nothing." Dude, are you kidding me? Unless you are a 7-year old who failed 2nd grade, don't come talking your trash. There are plenty of Rays fans down here who you don't see much of because we have had nothing to crow about. Now we're finally putting the pieces together, and we're excited. You don't like it? Well take your 2nd grade-level reading comprehension and beat it.

Guys, they do have some young talent. But, everyone knows it is not enough against the all-star rotations the Red Sox have and certainly not enought against the line up's both the Red Sox and Yankees bring to the field each day.
This is great for the Rays. Don't get me wrong. But I just feel over time (a month or two) they will be back towards the bottom because Boston and New York simply have to much talent on the mound and at the plate.

I don't expect the Rays to win the AL East but at the same time I don't think they will be the cellar dwellers either. At the start of the season I predicted them to come in third, Behind the Red Sox and Yankee’s.
They got a good young team that seems to be playing hard every night and are at least in the game with a chance to win it. And who knows maybe they can come in second in the division and get the wild card.

I think 3rd would be a lofty goal. I don't think they can make it through such a long season without dropping off. Maybe in a year or two but not now. I'm not saying last place but I am saying 4th place at best when it is all said and done.
