Big League Stew - MLB

This and every weekday a.m., let's rise and shine together with the most recent and decent major league happenings. Today's Roll Call starts — oh, dude! — in San Diego's famous Gaslamp District, where the Cubs toyed with the Padres before winning their ninth straight game, their best streak in seven seasons. It's the classic American sports story; either the Cubs break loose from their chains and win the World Series, or they take their fans to the brink of ecstasy before pushing them over a cliff to their doom.

Game of the Day: Cubs 9, Padres 6

Batty: The Cubs swung their way to victory, getting home runs from Geovany Soto, Alfonso Soriano and Mark DeRosa — but it was their pitching that made this one so much fun to watch.

Marquis de plod: Lou Piniella becomes easily irritated by anything Jason Marquis does, and it makes for great TV. If it were socially acceptable for Piniella to knee Marquis in the groin during a mound visit, he would do it. The Pads scored their first run on an errant pickoff throw to first base by Marquis with two outs and runners at the corners. Piniella was seen saying something like, "What the hell's he doing!" in response. Piniella must have gone up to each of his coaches 10 times and asked about Marquis. Larry Rothschild shook his head and furrowed his brow. Alan Trammell shook his head and said, "I don't know." Matt Sinatro just shook his head. Marquis actually stayed in the game long enough to win. He needed 105 pitches to wriggle through five innings. He had five walks, a balk, he hit a guy and the error.

The end: The Cubs built a 9-3 lead, but the bullpen frittered it away and SD was actually a swing away from tying the score in the eighth. TV had another great shot of a group of 200 or so Cubs fans sitting near each other, going cuckoo after Kerry Wood retired the last batter. They looked like holdovers from the '84 NLCS, stranded in San Diego all this time.

Feelin' Rundown (Tuesday's other games):

Rockies 3, Dodgers 0 — The First Rule of Fight Club is, only start fights you can win. Nobody wins in a baseball fight. Heck, hardly anyone ever fights in a baseball fight, but Matt Kemp and the Yorvit Torrealba rolled around on the ground pretty good after Matty took exception to something he probably imagined. Not to be pejorative or prejudicial or persnickety, but it's my understanding that Matt Kemp is — mothers, clear the room of children or at least cover their eyes — kind of surly. Take it out on the baseball next time. The second rule about Fight Club is, make sure that word reaches Singapore in no more than 14 minutes. Jeff Francis, where have you been? Come in here and give your Dutch Uncle a hug! The Third Rule of Fight Club is, never fight in front of Vin Scully. That's the most obscene part, that he was made to announce it. Matt Kemp, go to your room.

Mets 9, Giants 6 — If you had Pedro in the "Who's better tonight — Pedro, or Joba?" pool, you should press your luck by going double-or-nothing on "John Maine or Mike Mussina?"

Astros 2, Pirates 0 — Oh, Wan-dy. Oh, you stink on the road but you pitched well — like the Astros sure needed. Oh, Wan-dy. All you throw are some change-ups and curveballs — but the Pirates were clueless. Oh, Wandy.

Phillies 3, Reds 2 — No 600th home run for Ken Griffey, no sixth home run in as many days for Chase Utley, nothing but a single for The Boss Jay Bruce Almighty. The game counts anyway. I know, it's dumb. Pat Burrell did hit a two-run shot, but Pat the Bat is so April.

Braves 5, Marlins 4 — Chipper (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, .409 BA) apparently blushed when reporters reminded him that he reached 399 career homers. He's gonna pee his pants when they tell him he's hit No. 400. Ohmigosh, ohmigosh. The Braves improved to 3-16 in one-run games as Will Ohman goes to 3-0 (great news for those of you playing in a 28-team fantasy league) and Rafael Soriano picks up the save. John Smoltz stayed in the bullpen; shoulder soreness.

Brewers 7, D-backs 1Randy Johnson pitched well, despite the score, surpassing Roger the Dodger on the career strikeout list. He's still 1,000-plus behind Nolan Ryan. He is closer to catching up to the Express in age (Nolan only ages one year for every two in retirement) but it's cool to have an ancient ex-Mariner around. Mustache and mullet never complemented each other so well as with the Unit. Fans at Miller Park applauded Johnson as he exited the game. Except during football season, you don't find any nicer class of people than those from Wisconsin.

Cardinals 6, Nationals 1 — Rain deluged the nation's capital and made for 2 1/2 hours of delays, which could not cleanse the pile of dirty undies that are the Nationals. Ryan Zimmerman went on the DL because of a sore shoulder, so the club turned to the 1971 Washington Senators and recalled a 22-year-old Toby Harrah to play third base. The move, made possible because of the time machine discovered underneath the Smithsonian, is expected to be overturned by the commissioner's office — unless Nats officials can go back in time and prevent Bud Selig from being born in the first place.

Blue Jays 9, Yankees 3Jobad, says Jeff Passan. In funnier news, get this statement from Hank Steinbrenner on Joba's first career start: "Tonight was a creation of the media. If this had been a first start for any other pitcher on any other team, it wouldn't have been such a big deal." Yeah, Hank didn't have anything to do with hyping this.

Red Sox 7, Rays 4 — The cast David Ortiz wears is the most notorious one in Boston history since Harry Frazee cast "No, No, Nanette." And the Red Sox made do without Papi, for a night, against the best team in the American League. Every team gets lucky. Once.

Rangers 12, Indians 7 — The Rangers resort to using blunt instruments to bludgeon their opponents because they haven't had a pitching staff worth a darn in 15 years. Josh Hamilton is the biggest blunt instrument around these days so, sometimes, that'll work good.

Orioles 5, Twins 3Radhames Liz. Sounds like a pharaoh, and he wouldn't let anyone's people go for 5 1/3 against the Twinkies in his 2008 debut. Check out this fine story and priceless photo from 2006 of Liz sitting in a car with his minor-league host family — which apparently included Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin, former Giants slugger Matt Williams and some other kid -— for an idea of what we might expect from him.

Angels 5, Mariners 4Joe Saunders seems to be everything Erik Bedard ain't.

White Sox 9, Royals 5 — The Royals are to a struggling opponent what chicken soup is to a cold. Ozzie manages by terror sometimes. He threatened that GM Ken Williams would make sweeping roster changes (and/or fire a coach), or that Guillen would make sweeping lineup changes (like what, putting Pablo Ozuna at two positions?) if the ChiSox didn't score some runs. Faced with neither of those threats being viable, the club responded with four homers in a drubbing of Zack Greinke the likes of which he hadn't received in a long while.

Athletics 5, Tigers 4 (11 inn.) — The teams combined to leave 26 men on base. Dontrelle pitched four scoreless innings in his return to the starting rotation, but he walked five and struck out two. So, how does one read it? The Tigers slipped back to 10-under .500. They're like the British space program. Not going anywhere.

Cheer up, Joba. At least Barry Zito looked worse than you did.
Wait. No, he looks bad in every start. Never mind.

Yeah, the Cubs are playing good this year but it's still going to take them another 100 years to win a World Series. I'm telling you, they should have let that guy bring the goat into the stadium way back when. Besides, I don't think the Cubs ever recovered from the beating the Pads gave them in '84.

yeah the cubs have play well lately but look at who all their wins are agianst their schedule is so weak most of there games are agaainst the horrible west and not the only good team in that division(arizona) the streak they are on is against the dodgers who are the best of the group colorado and san diego. Go back one more series and it's the pirates. still they have 18 games against the west and the lost all three to the only good team in the west. Not to mention they've been at home all season. Over rated. They've lost agianst the only good teams in the division. the only series against the cards and two series against the brewers both of which are at wrigley ,good thing they have an extra home series against the brewers cause maybe the will win one home series cause the brewers are hard to beat in miller park

yo luke. the cubs swept the diamondbacks (who btw are awful, they can't hit to save their lives)... also, there one of the best offenses in the league and derek lee isnt even playing that well. aramis ramirez, alfonso soriano, fukodome, and i guess derek lemake up easily one of the more intimidating lineups in the national league. also theriot can get on base. giovanni soto is the best hitting catcher in the national league (not a fluke either, check his stats from last year). and derosa can still play. even carlos zambrano is tearing it up in the batters box. saying theyre over rated is just ignorant

yeah how can anyone say say the cubs are overrated??? dont talk about the cubs unless you guys actually watch their games because if you guys actually did, you guys will know cubs are definately not a fluke or overrated. yeah they played against sub par teams during their winning streak but they were still able to win 9 in a row, 8 of them being comeback victories

Yeah those "overrated" Cubs... manhandling the west with a record of 16-2 (not 3 losses) and beating (and sweeping) the teams who they are supposed to be beating because (in my opinion) the NL is a rather weak league. So, I don't know how they are overrated when this is where they should be at this point in the season. Now, (and I say this as a die-hard Cubs fan who has watched most of the games) where they will be at after interleague play and after playing the Cardinals some more is a different story. After that we can gauge it a little better.

The Cubs would actually be up 2 more games had they not melted down back to back in the last Pirates series. Soriano sure can hit the ball (when he's not striking out) but his defense stinks. That being said, this is probably the best team the Cubs have fielded in many years.

Agreed Scott, I (unfortunately) had the pleasure of being in Pittsburgh for both of those games and can't believe that happened two games in a row. If you got even further you could say that we could have had another win in the series opener against the Cards (the one where Soriano misplayed two balls hit to him).

The National League is real baseball! The american league has a DH. That's not real baseball! Get rid of the DH. Lastly, Since the cubs are in first in the national league... (a REAL league) and have the best record over-all in baseball.... I'd say they are obviously the best team. You can't argue statistics.

I love how everyone that doesn't like the Cubs say they are overrated. Who is rating them? They have the best record, that is enough said. I heared the Cardinal announcers talking about how different it will be in the second half be cause the Cubs have played so many (34) home games. The Cardinals have played 34 home games also. Is it just me or does every team play the same number (81) of home games and away games each year? Thought so. Anyway.
    luke s:
First off, as someone else stated above, we swept Arizona as they were coming in winning 4 in a row.
Second, as I mentioned above about the home games, the Brewers have played 28 at home compared to the Cubs' 34. Not a real big difference considering the Brewers have played alot of games against the WEAK (as I assume you feel the teams are since they only truly have 3 teams over .500) east teams. The Brewers have been playing the Braves, Astros and Pirates who are 2 games over .500 combined before they began playing the D-Backs.
Third, so if the D-Backs get to the World Series it shouldn't count because the west is so week and that is who they play the majority of their games against? The Cardinals won the World Seried with the worst regular season record in the history of baseball and it counted. I saw part of the parade on TV and everything.
Lastly, remember that we are not your buddies who believe that you know what you are talking about. Think about what you are gonna type, check your stats and then decide if it is really intelligent enough to share with the rest of us. Thanks.

The Cubs are 12-11 against teams with winning records (as of today)
They are 26-10 against sub-.500 teams
The Brewers are 21-20 against teams with winning records
They are 11-8 against sub-.500 teams.
The Brewers need to wipe the floor against losing teams -- like the Cubs have -- or else they have no chance. They're only doing OK against losers.

Look at the excitement! A-Rod yawning, Jeter glassy eyed, and a kazillion dollar payroll. This, a picture of Yankee players who are truly motivated in the new Yankee way. I too say "Go Yankers!", except that the destination I desire to see them reach is the unemployment line.
A-Rod would have more fun playing at Tampa Bay or with Sweet Lou up in Chitown where they play real baseball with thier hearts and not their checkbooks.
