Big League Stew - MLB

We've learned a lot of things about the once-anonymous Tampa Bay Rays as they've streaked from only 66 wins in '07 to the best record in baseball near the midpoint of '08.

Now meet their signature superfan, the Cowbell Kid, as he battles the invaders from Beantown during Monday night's 5-4 Tampa win.

(Warning: Seeing as how this video actually features a packed Tropicana Dome, repeated, loud chants of "Tampa, Tampa," and a signature superfan for the Tampa Bay Rays, this may be a little bit like viewing some sort of strange Bizarro World. Children and pregnant women be advised.)

Cowbell Kid is no pink gorilla, but a good effort nonetheless, especially for Tampa.

After the jump, watch a local news segment on the Cowbell Kid. Plus, find more of his videos here.

Where were these crazy fans last year? I don't call an average attendance of 17,148 supporting your team through thick and thin.....

Go for it, Cowbell Kid. Anyone fighting the Red Sox tide has my vote.
I recently sat next to a Sawx fan at an Orioles-Pirates game. He was chock full of breaking news - did you know that the Patriots beat the Panthers in the Super Bowl? Some people behind us from North Caroline were informed of that.

Forgot to add - how can anyone other than "The Heckler" be considered the Rays' signature superfan? That guy has been there night in, night out for years.

you have got to be kidding me?...c'mon,...the rays?-america's next base ball team? no, they can try all they want but I doubt that, that will ever hapen. plus the average rate to a rays game is 18,000! I'm not bagging on rays they have same good players but they are rarely noticed unless they are smashed by another team like the red sox.
(ps) IT ALL ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES DODGERS!!!

The Cow Bell kid is getting kinda old. enough already, let other people enjoy a baseball game without that bush league banging. Go to a hockey game or something. Why would they let that thing in the stadium? Sign at gates in the " house that Ruth built" NO COWBELLS will be allowed in "the Stadium." Add one to the trop PLEASE!

This is about as pathetic/bush league as the Red Sux's pitchers having 'musical time' in the bullpen during last year's World Series. Of course that served a purpose, seeing as Papelbon has the intellect and attention-span of a kindergartner; how else would they keep him still for 8 innings?
    "Me Papelbon, me like music."

Has the cowbell kid had a mental health evaluation lately? It's also border line child abuse the way he mentors that kid . his loud remarks to the visiting players are absolutely childish, and the kid should not hear these things. 99% of the people at the trop hate this banging and imbarrassing actions by this unstable man. Can't you be like most baseball fans and just cheer on your team, without banging and teaching a kid that stuff? teach that kid and others to understand baseball and it's history, and that high you get from being at a ballpark. one more thing, I hope he moves to another area to follow the Rays or whatever they call them in their new city soon. future Yankees BJ, Kazmir, and others.

Mdub, the crazy fans were there last year. It's just that no one noticed because no one else was there.
Chuck, you sound like a Yankees fan. Secondly, it isn't his kid, so you can't blame him for having followers. However, if the kid learns something, maybe he'll learn that you can have a lot of fun at a baseball game without being an alcoholic, which describes many of the "most baseball fans" that I've seen sporting the same Yankees jersey that you wear. There are so many things worth complaining about, but here you are all upset about the Cowbell Kid.
There is a group of people going to games in right field who have tons of fun and for some reason this upsets people. Try saying that outloud and see if it passes the common sense filter, "I'm pissed off because a grown man dresses funny and yells in deep right field at a baseball game."
And finally, that "unstable man" owns his own business.
