Missed it by THAT much: Giants fence denies Kinsler home run

Half a biscuit for breakfast, as Harry Caray used to say, and Ian Kinsler(notes) would have achieved World Series immortality.

Alas: Cruel, cruel fence.

Kinsler seemed certain he had given the Texas Rangers a 1-0 lead by hitting a home run to start the fifth inning of Game 2.

The center-field fence at AT&T Park had other ideas, snatching the ball — with San Francisco Giants outfielder Andres Torres(notes) looking on — to keep it in play for a frustrating double.

How frustrating?

The Rangers stranded Kinsler at second base and Giants right-hander Matt Cain(notes) didn't let Texas off the mat. San Francisco broke open a close game in the eighth inning and beat the Rangers 9-0 to take a 2-0 lead in the Series.

Kinsler also just missed the media — he actually dodged them completely — but Giants closer Brian Wilson(notes) had something to say about Kinsler's moment of near-greatness.

"I was thinking that wall was designed perfectly for tonight," Wilson said.

Everything, seemingly, has been designed perfectly for the Giants so far. They are two victories from their first World Series championship since they moved to San Francisco in 1958.

Every one of the previous 11 home teams who took a 2-0 lead in the Series went on to win it. Overall, 40 of the 51 teams that took a 2-0 lead won the Series.

Edgar Renteria(notes) put the Giants on the board in their half of the fifth with a no-doubt solo homer to left. No fence could interfere.

Juan Uribe(notes) added an RBI single in the seventh and the Giants piled on with seven runs after two outs in the eighth.

Cain still hasn't allowed an earned run in 21 1/3 postseason innings.
