Big League Stew - MLB

Yeeeargh! Shiver me timbers and fly the Jolly Roger at half staff, mateys!

The Pirates, who have averaged 89 losses since 1993, sank to the deepest part of Pittsburgh's Three Rivers on Thursday after one of its split squads lost to Manatee (Fla.) Community College during a fundraising exhibition game.

In some ways, the top of the box score says it all: Manatee C.C. 6, Pittsburgh 4.

The Sarasota Herald-Review, however, ran a very detailed story — almost 1,000 words, for your Bucco masochists — about how the Lancers did the unlikely at McKechnie Field in Bradenton.

It's only fair to point out that the Pirates lineup was filled out by guys who missed the cut in spring training. Several of the team's best players, including Nate McLouth, Ryan Doumit, the LaRoches and Stewcast guest Freddy Sanchez, did not play in the game.

Yet several guys who have logged big league minutes — like Mets' killer Steve Pearce, Brian Bixler and Robinzon Diaz — were in the no-win situation lineup, as was prized prospect Jose Tabata.  Virgil Vazquez, who contended for Pittsburgh's fifth starter spot this spring, started the game for Pittsburgh on the mound.

OK, so your aunt was in contention for that fifth spot, too, but that's not the point. These were real, live Triple-A (perhaps even Class 4A) players.

And these junior college Manatees managed to beat ‘em!

Whatever excuse you want to drum up for the Pirates — spring training's almost over, the scrubs played the final five innings,  the juco players wanted it more — we still say it's not good enough. Get ready Pirates, we'd like for you to take on our office softball team.

* * *

One more note: I discovered that the Pirates have a prospect named Henry Henry, who played in the game and made the final out. He's just in Class A, but I sure hope he makes it to the majors someday. Not since Boutros Boutros Gali or Duany Duany has a man so nice they named him twice made such an impact.

How many years since a .500 or better record? Pittsburgh was once a force to reckon with. The 60', 70's, 80's, & early 90's. What happened? It all seems to have started once Barry Bonds & Bobby Bonilla left. From a playoff to oblivion almost overnight and it's lingered for years with no end in sight.

there is a curse on the Pirates, and something tells me that it has to do w/ none-other than Mr. Bonds himself.

Unfortunately, this type of losing is going to carry into the season. I'm hoping us Pirate fans can count on team leadership building this franchise back up.

If tone08857 & tonebasher wish to be taken seriously, perhaps a short course in writing and spelling would be in order. Lacking that, might they at least stick to the topic and eliminate all their disgusting comments. Didn't their parents ever teach them the well-known adage, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!" Their display of immaturity is a sad reflection of our current society, where responsibility and respect are almost nonexistent. As to the Pirates game, it is unfortunate that professional players, even minor-leaguers, would succumb to a junior college team. But, as the pundits say, that's why they play the games - anything can happen! "On any given Sunday," etc....

Even if JUCO baseball in Florida were as good as D1 baseball (and it's good but not as good, sorry) they still shouldn't beat the Pirates A level team, let alone these guys. Even with their composite bats (which I don't think college players should be allowed to use, you got the #8 hitter who is 5-9 and 165 hitting it out) these guys should have killed Manatee.
The real problem is the scouts select players based on athletic skill instead of baseball skill. There are kids in this country who really know baseball and are really good players but they don't throw 90 (because they won't take steroids) or hit the ball a mile (because they won't take steroids). The scouts don't want these kids. They want "potential." This is why in the World Series every year you get big name players who can't lay down a bunt in a crucial situation or they make a baserunning blunder that costs you the game or WS.
Mike Piazza is a perfect example to show the arrogance and incompetence of the Major League Scouting System. He was on no ones radar. He was drafted only as a favor to Tommy Lasorda who knew him. For every Mike Piazza there are a hundred more.
Meanwhile we go to Venezuela and get some kid "who is going to be a superstar." Instead I get to watch a guy whose name I can't pronounce and can't speak his language and he can't mine bat .250 and play 2nd base. I would rather watch one of our kids bat .250 and play 2nd base. I am absolutely sick of this whole concept.

Look at the Minnesota Twins. They have an owner who is pretty cheap and somehow they draft or trade for players who know how to hit and play defense. The Pirates over the years have traded future superstars for nothing.

Geez Pittsburgh - that's some pretty weak sauce. I wonder if Tabata's 43 year-old wife was in the stands. Some of those juco players might be even younger than him.

If this was any sport other than baseball, I'd be alarmed. In baseball, though, anybody can beat anyone with a right bounce or two and/or a starting pitcher who is on his game. How else can you explain the Pirates winning 68-70 games a year? Even the worst team in MLB each year typically wins 40% of their games, so I'm not sure this should be considered too too surprising.

As far as I'm concerned the Steelers' two SuperBowls and the Penguins draft lottery fortunes more than make up for the Pirates' ineptitude.
