Big League Stew - MLB

The Globe's Tony Massarotti reported an interesting item on Thursday that I hope simply won't be shrugged off or allowed to be minimized in any way.

According to two of Tony's sources, Major League Baseball recently denied a proposal that would have increased the amount of road meal money that minor leaguers receive each day.

Oh, it wasn't anything life changing — the daily total would only have been upped to $25 from $20 — but MLB is said to have conveniently cited the flagging economy as a reason.

Yes, the same MLB that reported $6 billion in revenue in 2007 and oversees teams handing out $161 million contracts to one pitcher is the one that's putting the kibosh on a plan that had already been approved by all 30 minor league directors and then by all 30 GMs.

From Boston.com's Extra Bases:

"One team representative estimated that the increase might have cost each club somewhere in the range of $25,000, a microscopic sum in the multibillion dollar industry that MLB has become. Multiplied by 30, that places the total cost of the increase somewhere in the range of $750,000."

Honestly, it's embarrassing for the MLB to be clanging the tin cup and playing the poor act. Even as it delivers coffers of cash to the league, MLB.com just cut four percent of its workforce, including some of its best talent. Then it delivers news like this to guys who are already chasing their dreams on a bare-bones paycheck and living five players to a one-bedroom apartment. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Twenty dollars per day? Have these guys been out there recently to see how much things cost? You can't even get out of McDonald's or Taco Bell these days without spending six or seven dollars. God forbid if they actually want some healthy food to help their athletic careers.

Of course, since we're all facing hard economic times, I'm sure MLB will issue an order to all the teams making sure the next beer-and-hot dog you buy from a concession stand won't cost you more than the per diem of a minor league baseball player.

I'm seeing this all over the place... Rich folks are claiming hardships just to screw poor folks out of a few extra dollars.

I don't know.. I'd eat like a king if I were given $20 a day to eat with. Go hungry a few off days and save some of that dough and you're rolling into an Applebee's in no time!

Let them start doaling out $20.00 meal per diems to the major leaguers, too if that's the case.

everyone likes to keep their money in their own pockets right now. It's the reason why our economy is so screwed up.

MLB has gone down hill in recent years, with disparity between the haves & the have-nots. Baseball's economics is quite obviously screwed up! How is it one team can pay one player 7 times more than the entire payroll of some of the lower payroll teams? MLB should contract & get rid of a few teams, lest they're just fodder for the rich teams. I know I am not interested MLB anymore.

Yea; lets screw the monor leaguers; while we dish out $250M (yea; Million) for 2 pitchers- thats a great way to parity, and a great way to maintain the all american game! Lets ban the Yankee's or let them go fund their own league.

here's an idea for the times. all the "have not" teams could resign from MLB, along with any other teams agreeing to a "reasonable" annual spending cap, say 50 million dollars, and form the North American Baseball League. The remaining 4 or 6 teams in MLB (ie. the yanks, red sox, mets etc.) could fight it out with Scott Boras for a-rod, manny, and all the other ego-inflated players who seem to care about nothing more than having the annual income of a developing nation.

I think all owners should to pay for their own stadiums and buildings. I dont think taxpayers should have to pay .These owners make so much money and can spend so much on players. I think there is too much greed in sports and whoever has the most money can buy that player. What if everybody canceled their cable and satelitte subscription ?

This is not exactly the point of the post, but I just need to add that I love the "Three Kings" of Christmas Humbug: Mr. Potter, The Grinch and Scrooge (McDuck). That's booty-ful serendipity, or kismet, or whatever.

Ted D, I like your thinking, but realistically, I doubt forming a new league would happen. It would be cool, however. I'd be all for it! Look at the NFL - any team can win it all, and they have equal distribution of their earnings. As much as the Cowboys want to be the Yankees of football, they cannot - thank God! But, even in the NFL, as in baseball, like indianfan & geno alluded to, players are paid WAY TOO MUCH - especially rookies who are unproven! Like the economy (i.e., housing bubble), these escalating salaries cannot go on! There will be a "crash" of sorts - the economy (corporate sponsors, advertising, fans) will no longer have the means to support these ridiculous sums. After all, sports is a luxury, not a necessity.

    Good point Paul!
I think of of these free agents that just singed for tens of millions if not hundreds of millions should step up and pay the 750k it would take to get this done. It would be a great PR move and wouldnt cost them much. Think of how much face Manny could make if he donated the money for this and how greedy he would make the mlb officals look.

Yet you want me to cry for minor leaguers trying to live off TWENTY? These players should be eating like royalty for $20- like burger kings!

Here is a crazy idea -- why not buy your own meals like the rest of the free world. If you want to spend more than 2 bucks per day, go ahead. It's just another subsisdy paid for by the fans.

Johnny Gomes gave an interview where he talked about how most players would just eat an asston of dollar menu items or the $5 footlongs from Subway.
He should know what you can get with $20 a day since he'll be back in the minors instead of sitting on the bench not on the post-season roster and making it look like he is an important part of the team.
