Big League Stew - MLB

Congratulations to the 2008 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who not only just clinched the American League West with a 4-2 win over the Yankees, but also just answered the age-old debate as to whether there's a worse way to clinch your division while in front of a road crowd.

The answer would be a big yes with the competition coming when you're sitting in your home clubhouse, watching the Mariners beat the Rangers, long after *most* of your home fans have left and are sitting on the freeway.

You know, it's a little like sending your friends home from a party you're throwing, only to have the guy in the ape suit (or, in this case, a Rally Monkey suit) show up two hours late with a few cans of silly string.

What adds to the bittersweet is that they could have celebrated on the field in front of the Yankees.

So let's help the Angels celebrate until they can get back to Angels Stadium tomorrow and celebrate with the rest of their own fans before they can play the compliant Mariners. We'll have plenty of special Angels coverage tomorrow and in the month ahead, but for now let's all just join in a slow clap for the first team to clinch a postseason berth in 2008.

UPDATE: Kudos for the few hundred fans that stayed after the game and stuck it out to celebrate with their Halos. While I'm sure they would have preferred a more dramatic last out to clinch the division at the end of the nine innings, this looks like a pretty memorable celebration, too.

Ah, but the fans did stay to watch the end of the Mariner/Texas game and the team came out to spray the fans with bubbly before they went to the clubhouse for a drenching.

I guess the people attending have more important lives (and jobs apperently) than an internet writer that has an apostrophe in his/her name. It must be fulfilling 'Duk. Are you aware it was a 12:30pm game in Anaheim (also known as a part of Southern California)? By the way do junior colleges offer grammar classes? I'm not sure what you mean by "...party you're throwing, only to have to guy in the ape suit..." but I'm sure your fellow classmen speak super good like you and understand just ok like you. It's not the Angels' fault that they are so much better than the majority of the teams they face. So rather than wasting your time writing an article that is a rather pathetic attemp to be clever you should be writing a new resume, or application. Considering who might hire you I'd concentrate on the latter. Remeber to use black ink. I also hope you noticed my brilliant use of apostrophes. I may change my name to J'eff.

this is great, go angels! your all set to meet the defending world champions in the playoffs again. yeah, you beat them in the regular season, but lets see you do it in the playoffs where it actually means something. Sox in 4, i'll be nice and say they wont sweep you this time

Congrats Los Angeles-of-Orange County-of-Disneyland-of-SoCal-of-Anaheim Angels! Best all-around team in Baseball. Definately deserved to clinch first and without any drama! (Except for the mini-brawl between Tori and Pudgy-Rodriguez)

    'Duk:
You must have missed the crowd in the stadium that watched the end of the Ms-Rangers on the video boards and the celebration that followed, which included an ecstatic Jered Weaver followed by the rest of his teammates (save for Hunter) and a dousing of the fans by Jose Arredondo with the hose used by the grounds crew.
Then again, if you missed it, well... that's nothing new, now is it?

Great job Angels! The best team in baseball is going to be a lot healthier in the playoffs. To you Red Sox fans, They need to make it to the playoffs before you can talk. They get beat by a team (The Rays) full of young players that are minor leaguers on any other team.

Hey #16 - The Angels have a 28-16 record against the "far superior" AL East. That's a .571 winning percentage, which is very close to the Red Sox total winning percentage so far this year of .590 - including games against all those supposedly inferior teams outside the AL East.
Don't forget, the Angels compiled an 8 - 1 record against your Red Sox. Looks like you are the one that needs to do the dreaming!

    # 15 you forget that you are the defending world champs minus you # 4 hitter, who by they way is paying for another contending team in LA, albeit a s***** LA team. There is no way anyone can beat the Angels in the playofs, there simply is not another team as well balanced as them, look they clinched the division with a 1/3 starting lineup.

Typical of eastern scum to post their unhappiness with our most excellent Angels. Never liked Manny and never will, but I sure do hope that a Freeway Series happens more than ever because of him... to show the putrescent Red Sux fans that their team is nothing without him. And we here out west all live here for one reason and one reason only, the jet stream goes from West to East, and we all want to live up wind from the dung pile.

Good take Wicked. Baseball is all about celebrating the good times, sticking with your team when they play poorly, and hoping for success in the playoffs when they make it.
