Johnny Damon buys cowboy hat for trip to Texas

St. Petersburg mayor Bill Foster declared Thursday "Rays Day," after Wednesday night's thrilling, improbable 8-7 victory that vaulted Tampa Bay's comeback kids into baseball's postseason.

We don't know what the citizenry of the Tampa/St. Pete region chose to wear in celebration of this special day, especially when a Rays flag was raised at St. Petersburg City Hall at noon. But hopefully, many Rays fans got into the spirit of playing the Texas Rangers like Johnny Damon(notes) did before boarding the team flight to Arlington.

Check out that cowboy hat! Turd Ferguson would be proud of that magnificent headwear.

The Rays have gone with the Western motif on road trips before, such as in 2009 when the team went to Colorado, and manager Joe Maddon enjoys team-building themes such as wearing plaid and growing their hair out.

Judging from the video at TampaBay.com, it looks like Damon was on his own with the cowboy look. But he didn't get to join in the fun two years ago, when he was with the New York Yankees.

But if the Rays have success in Texas, his coaches and teammates might prefer to follow the example of their good luck charm if a Game 5 is played in Arlington. The staffs at Spencer's Western World and Russell's Western Wear in the Tampa area better stock up on gear, just in case.
