Big League Stew - MLB

Over his seven seasons with the New York Yankees, Hideki Matsui(notes) seemingly blended into the background of the Yankees universe, his talent drowned out by the star power of those in the lineup around him. In Japan, he has always played second banana to Ichiro(notes), the face of all things Major League Baseball to the Japanese population.

But after Wednesday's big performance against the Phillies, Matsui turned into the king of both spheres, making the World Series a bit more true to its name by becoming the first Japanese player to be named World Series MVP.

From the Associated Press:

"Japanese workers crammed into downtown electronics stores to watch the final few innings on giant TVs. The game ended just before 2 p.m. local time Thursday, giving workers an excuse to take an extended lunch break.

"'All the news recently has been about Ichiro Suzuki,' said office worker Hiroyuki Takeuchi, who took the morning off to watch the game. 'But Matsui's presence is huge. He overcame injuries and came through with the performance of a lifetime. As a Japanese, I'm very proud today.'"

The AP speculates that the 35-year-old Matsui could return to Japan to play for the Hanshin Tigers — the fierce rival of his former team, the Yomiuri Giants – if he doesn't sign a new deal with the Yankees. Whether or not a few hot days against the Phillies will talk the Yankees into bringing back Matsui's bad knees remains to be seen, but the outcome will never take away from the one day he was the brightest star in the baseball world.

Matsu-san, you are one of the shining examples of what a professional athlete should and can be. You have been a class act since you hit these US shores. If I were you, I would want to return to my native land (providing they can match the USA money) to be treated with the reverance and respect you will receive in your country at the end of your career. You have hit some of the hardest balls I have ever seen hit since you donned the pinstripes, and I dare say Pedro will not forget you. Thank you for bringing home #27 to the Big Apple.

It might be a good idea for Matsui to just retire from MLB return to Japanese baseball again. It will save him face (which is huge in Japanese culture) if the Yankees don't resign him. It also keeps the Yankees from looking unappreciative of the WS MVP. And this way he also gets to end his MLB career on top and then come home as a hero. I don't know how greedy Matsui is, but I think if he stays here playing the States he's going to go out ungracefully.

don't knock icherio he's also a great ball player and hitter in his own right...has seattle played its starting pitcher's alot more they might have made it into the postseason...and it's one of the teams new york struggled against in the regular season and were probably glad they didn't make it into postseason....matsui is a great player and plays second to a-roid,jeter and the rest of the overpaid yankee's who really didn't do what matsui did saving them from a game seven....it would have been very insulting if jeter or a-roid got mvp....be interesting to see if they try to keep him in the offseason..or will he join seattle catcher and go back to japan.....

Ever notice how Matsui always seems to take two strikes, then proceeds to pound the stuffing out of anythng pitched after that. I admire the guy's humility. He seems a bit shy, most likely because of the language barrier, cultural differences. It doesn't matter, he's a class act and a credit to the game. Japan and the USA can be proud of him.

Ichiro- for a career .333 hitter, he has a career .378 OBP, which isn't too great considering his batting average. Matsui has a career .370 OBP with more power .482 SLG vs .434 for Ichiro.

I think if the NYY don't re-sign him, he should go to the Mariners. How cool would that be to have Ichiro and Matsui on the same team? I think they'd love that.
I've always had an immense appreciation for Hideki Matsui. Just his humility and professionalism is an unbelievable characteristic, and I just love his batting stance! ^_^
Whatever happens, I know that it was an honor to have Matsui play for the Yankees, and i wish him all the very best wherever he goes.

matsui has earned all the accolades he is getting. i love the guy, but the Yanks need the DH spot to rest regulars such as alex, jorge, etcetera. I am sorry to see him go, but no knowledgable yankee fan would clog up the DH spot with a guy who can't field anymore. I bow to Hideki, but sadly his reign has come to an end for the Yanks. Wherever he plays next year, I am sure he will be awesome. Thank you Hideki for being a great player and a class act. You will be remembered as a champion.

I agree with many above, Matsui is a rarity in professional sports, a true class act, team sportsman, and gentleman. He was never one to grumble or speak ill about others.
I knew he was special when he paid reverance to the memory of the 9-11 victims in New York. How fitting that in what may be his very last outing in the Major Leagues, he went out on top with truly a legendary performance that ranks up there with the all time great Yankees.
Congrats to Matsui and best of whatever comes his way in the future.

Hideki Matsui will likely move to the west coast and play for the Seattle Mariners if not resigned to the Yankees. Seattle needs a DH since Ken Griffey will likely retire or get traded. I heard rumors that Ichiro and Matsui don't get along too well together though and that may have been the reason why Matsui never played in the WBC. Anyway, Seattle is a huge asian market and Matsui is exactly the bat they need if they want to contend next season. The San Francisco Giants are the only other team i can see go for Matsui but they have no DH so they are out of luck. Matsui, i have read, does not intend to return to Japan after this season so he will definitely play for the Yankees or the Mariners.
