Big League Stew - MLB

Before he allegedly pulled a fast one on the Atlanta Braves, free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal talked with the Athletics about playing in Oakland. He didn't sign, of course, and FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal says the A's have problems attracting free agents because of "working conditions and security concerns" regarding their home stadium, McAfee Coliseum.

That leads to a big question: What's wrong with McAfee, other than a few isolated incidents, most of which are associated with Raiders games? In an attempt to provide an answer, here are 10 concerns might be in the minds of free agents:

10. Billy Beane’s wish for all players to have a .230 batting average but a .430 on-base percentage just too awkward of a split to realistically achieve.

9. Closer Brad Ziegler's inability to stay absolutely perfect for entire season shook confidence of free agent market.

8. Cell phone thrown from stands that beaned Carl Everett in '03 started another annoying trend that still includes wise guys screaming "Can you hear me now?" at Jack Cust.

7. Most players too lazy to take the three-mile hike from the far-away dugouts to their position on the field.

6. Stomper, the A's elephant mascot, repeatedly tramples children at ballgames. No, not because he's vicious, but because he's an elephant.

5. Cost-cutting measure of firing the grounds crew means games have to be played with the tarp covering the infield at all times.

4. Leftover Raiders fans dressed as Darth Vader in the "Black Hole" section take to lightsaber duels using actual lightsabers, and there have been some beheadings.

3. Rather than stats, scoreboard instead shows pithy but irrelevant passages from "Moneyball."

2. Bowing to the demand for greater protection following the Frank Francisco chair-throwing incident in '04, management overreacts by installing removable grandstand so fans can throw their seats onto the field of play.

1. Ushers constantly delaying games to check with players to see if their virus protection is up to date.

The problem w/ the A's is that they trade everyone away at the first hint of losing. Billy Beane gets all the accolades for being a great GM, but all he does is stockpile draft picks, and slash payroll. You have to have some type of talent & leadership to consistently win in the MLB.

Pretty lame attempt at anti Beane humor. Did you graduate from the same school of ignorance as Joe Morgan?

Billy Beane is a great GM, look how much he wins with such a low payroll. He slashs payroll and still manages to win. You can't fault him for the owners payroll limits.
Does anyone else find it ironic that McAfee Coliseum has "security concerns"?

Can't be considered a great GM if your teams last championship was almost 2 decades ago. Look at all the talent they squandered in the early 2000's. Free agents don't want to come to Oakland because they know they won't consistently win with the way they handle their star players...

what security concerns are they 'NOT" talking about. I am a supporter of the Oakland Coliseum for any and all events. I am at the Raider games, A's games, Warrior games, Disney shows, concerts of all types. People just don't know what to say if they never have been there. Media talk a lot of crap just for the publicity and so you will pay for their paper. If the Oakland Coliseum had major security issues, then it would of been shut down by the city and county as they are liable for incidents that occur on that property.
As for Mr. Billy Beane, he is the General Manager, but people forget that he also has a boss...the Owner, Mr. Wolfe. So when decisions are made, possibly the owner has some input as to who he would like on his payroll! ! ! People put these players on a pedestal and then complain about their pay.Who do you think is paying them? The fans! Players come and go throughout the league. That's Life!
One Raider Nation under Oakland Athletics indivisible with liberty and Golden State Warriors for A L L!

This is an ignorant article. I can't believe Yahoo! pays the alleged journalist David Brown...he's cynicism is the problem with reporters who talk about the small market teams in the majors. We'll see who has a problem with the stadium in the next few years: by 2011, the A's will have at least 1 championship.
Who cares about the stadium, last time I checked, it is about the players on the field. Would you be happy with At&t park with sub par players?

Rumor has it that Kinzer is the agent making the story up. Kinzer had to make up a story why Furcal didn't take the money the A's offered. Maybe the housing prices in the oakland hills scared Furcal that his money will not afford a mansion. Furcal wife loves LA is why he resigned there. She thinks she could be a actress but has no talent. You know when a Furacal who is whipped by his wife is told LA there is no other option for him.

To Bobby, I think that many people are perfectly fine with AT&T park with their subpar players. That park is the only reason why I ever watch the embarrassing Giants. I tend to cheer for the other team anyway. (I'm a Mariners fan myself, but I live a couple hours away from SF).
But I think that it's BS if people say that the A's won't get free agents because of their stadium. They don't get free agents because the team isn't very good anymore.

    To benz0,
The A's suck? They have one of, if not the deepest farm system of the majors, and have an abundance of near major league ready talent. They did bad in 2008 because it was there first real year of rebuilding what do you expect? How does a rotation of Cahill, Anderson, Mazzaro, Simmons, etc. sound in 2010? I'm sure that won't poise any threat to you're favorite team, the Mariners.

ahh "the coliseum".... come for the game, leave feeling as if you were just in jail for a brief stint... and you had to pay to get there....
i think this: if the structure is all cement, and in the middle of oakland....let's just be honest- its more like a jail then anything else...
make it work for you billy and gm guy.
serve jail food, maybe have the ushers wear prison guard uniforms, stage an "inmate" fight with the folks in the bleachers... maybe even a sanctioned food fight.
believe me folks, the coliseum is simply horrible.
and if you don't believe me do this. go to AT&T park and watch the horrible giants play a game in that beauty of a park, then come and see the A's, who actually always "field" a decent team. come watch the green and gold and tell me this place isn't horrible.
13,000 fans show up tops to every game, you sit around in a giant jail and wonder why/how anyone would tolerate being a player for billy beane. it's just sad sad sad.

What? I've never sensed insecurity at Oakland Coliseum other than crazy Raiders fans in the Black Hole. Seriously, this is clearly just another attempt to bash the A's.
Besides, anyone who bashes Billy Beane clearly doesn't understand the conditions under which the Athletics operate. He doesn't constantly push his players out the door for the sheer joy of it -- they have one of the lowest payrolls in the majors. I can only dream of what Beane could assemble with a merely average payroll to work with. The fact that he managed to put together very successful teams (until the last two years of course) is absolutely astounding.
Nonetheless... I don't have high hopes for next year. Looks like another year of bad baseball in the bay.

Media is dead on with the A's and one of the worst stadiums in professional sports. Year in and year out the Oakland Coliseum is ranked one of the graveyards for pro sports by SI and ESPN. Having a good stadium = more revenue and helps attract and keep free agents. Why is the coliseum bad??? #1 area.... it is located in one of the worst areas of Oakland, ranked one of the 5 worst US cities for violence. #2 seating.... you sit 50 yards away from the playing field #3 environment... it is a disgustingly dirty and old stadium. Also fan base is not as strong as 90s due to what I feel is stadium.... but, I do believe that there are NOT "security" concerns for A's games. It is just a crappy place to watch a game, yet the product is way better on the field than the Giants who do sell out (good stadium = high attd).
Raiders a whole different story. Living in the Bay Area you can't even watch all the Raider games on TV due to blackouts (poor product on field = poor attd). And yes last season (2007) someone was killed in the parking lot and yes last week someone was seriously injured due to "Raider Fans and violence".
I was at the AFC championship game vs Titans in 2002/2003 season.. great environment, but they had one cop per every isle so it was heavily policed... and after the game the city of Oakland had a riot to celebrate.
The answer is simple... new stadium for the A's... Fremont or Jack London. Raiders...who cares worst team in Pro sports the last 6 years. Hopefully Al takes them back to LA.

surely this was an article in jest, but:
#10 is ridiculously stupid. beane cares about OBP primarily. the reason a .230 BA would come into effect is that someone who has a .230 BA would probably be undervalued. thus, the A's could sign a guy with your fictitious .430 OBP (which would be amazing, even if the guy was batting .150), for far cheaper than they could if he were batting .280. do some research and come to some understanding about the man and his methods, you dolt.
also, for all the people who complain about the A's "not winning a championship", consider this. from 2001-2008:
    yankees: 773-520 (0.5978), $1,431,218,348 spent, zero championships.
    A's: 724-571 (0.5591) $463,218,575 spent, zero championships.
