Big League Stew - MLB

David Brown is at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, where he files this report about the status of this weekend's Cubs-Astros series in Houston ...

We now turn to the weather and Cubs mananger Lou Piniella, who has been tracking the progress of Hurricane Ike via a TV in his office at Busch Stadium. What's going on, Lou?

"I had the hurricane on my desk," Piniella said Thursday afternoon. "I just wanted to see. Unless its [trajectory] changed, it's going right to Houston [on] Saturday morning."

To wit, the first two games of the Cubs-Astros series — Friday and Saturday — have been postponed. If the storm abates by late Saturday, the Cubs could fly to Houston for a Sunday doubleheader at Minute Maid Park. Both teams are scheduled for off days Monday, so a day game could be played before the Cubs would return to Wrigley Field to face the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.

Or the Cubs and 'Stros could find a backup site. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said he expected a decision on that option to come Friday. Options reportedly do not include St. Louis or Milwaukee, cities which might give the Cubs too much of a home-away-from-home-field advantage.

In a story written Thursday on Houston Chronicle's website, the Cubs were portrayed as feeling "displeasure" at the series not being moved to a neutral site by now, but Piniella, Hendry and players were only worried about being made to fly into a hurricane.

"I don't think you put players in danger, you don't put families that are going to the ballpark just to play a baseball game," said Piniella, whose team instead will fly home to Chicago, rest Friday and work out Saturday afternoon.

The storm already is making a mess of Galveston, a coastal city in Texas, which governor Rick Perry urged residents to flee. Singer Glen Campbell helped make Galveston famous in a megahit song from yesteryear:"Galveston, oh Galveston," Campbell wrote, "I still hear your sea winds blowin'."

Also in the Chronicle, Jack Colley, chief of the Governor's Division of Emergency Management, described the storm as hitting like a tidal wave. "This is a surge tsunami," Colley said.

Piniella has his doubts about going to Houston, even later in the weekend.

"We're going to ... be prepared to go somewhere," Piniella said. "Assuming the airports are even open. You never know. I'm not a weatherman, so I'm not going to get too involved in the scenarios."

My opinion is, no, even with a crucila seris such as this they shold take any risks, but it I also think that they should make it up if you have to in Houston. This involves a division and wild card race, and so it should be played where the Astros are at home, not where they don't have the benefit of thier fans and field.

I'm here in Houston and I think they'll play two on Sunday one on Monday. These games, this late in the season are far too important to miss, or re-locate. I'm just glad I don't have any tickets!

The writing in this entry was bad - really bad. It felt like someone had taken a Kenny Mayne monologue and put it to print. The Glen Campbell song in there was 'way out in left field' random. Besides, you mention 'Galveston' and 'hurricane' in the same sentence, you don't mention Glen Campbell. You mention 1900 - when a hurricane destroyed Galveston, killing thousands.

It's only right these games are postponed -- and not played on a "neutral" site. I understand both teams reasons, but these are important games. Why shouldn't Houston keep it's home field advantage? Also, some of the players live in the Houston area, so I think they might want to get their stuff in order prior to the storm coming. I know I'd want that time off take care of my family and valuables. Berkman said it best: "this baseball stuff is important but it's not life or death."

Baseball is secondary when it comes to a hurricane. The games will be eventually played. Let the players make sure there families are safe before the hurricane hits.

@Bobbie Browns Anger Manager - You're assuming we have power by then. If anyone has any sense, they will not be going to a baseball game on Sunday. But Cubs fans are rather rabid... and do silly things.

The only reason we are having this discussion is because a greedy owner doesn't want to give up the ticket sales for a sold out weekend. The stros owner wanted the cubs to fly in and play the first game saturday afternoon and have everybody settle in for a category 4 hurricane. The owners don't care about baseball, only their pockets.

It's not about "rabid" cubs fans d-bag its about Astros owner Drayton McLane being greedy. What does this have to do with cubs fans doing "silly thing?"

The Astros suck. Just give the Cubs a few more wins so we can watch them fail again in the playoffs.

when the cub's late season collapse is complete, they will point to this as another piece of evidence that the curse is alive and well.
regarding the make-up games, i think a sunday/monday series won't happen due to issues related to the hurricane. different weather sites are expecting the largest power outage in our nation's history. no electricity=no game. i actually hate to see the break. teams that are rolling tend to cool off after a layoff...look at the rockies in the ws last year.
    go 'stros!!!

I see Lou's all concerned now, but he didn't say anything when umpires had the Astros and Cubs continue playing in a lightning storm last month in Chicago. I wonder if the Astros being ahead after fifth inning had anything to do with that?

Who's going to be cryin when the Cubs have the division wrapped up and they have to go to Houson on the 29th with their AAA team? It would have been better for them to cancel the games in Houston and move them to Arlington or some other neutral site. The Stros are going to cool off now and have no one to blame except for there greedy owner when they loose 2 of 3 or get swept!!!

Bud Selig needs to act in the best interest of baseball and move the game to a neutral site. He is penalizing the cubs for a stadium that will not be used for at least two days, with a chance of playing sunday and monday. If its not safe on friday/saturday, who thinks you can predict a better outcome. Now the cubs could have to play on their off day which is ok but what happens to the makeup games, at the end of the season? These games may not impact the cubs by the end of the season but they impact the wild card race. If the cubs clinch the division, then they will put the 2nd string team out which will impact the wild card race and if the cubs do not clinch, they have to fight for the wildcard race and then play the wild card series so close to each other.
    Bud, grown some will ya!

The game is going to have to be moved to a neutral site if Houston is not ready on Sunday. Baseball will need to put in a contigency plan next year for these things. Yes, I understand that giving up home field advantage is upsetting to the Astros fans, however, this has happened in the past and teams were required to deal with it. The Marlins seem to run into it year after year because of their Florida location and the Cleveland Indians had to move their games last year because of snow. There's nothing that can be done about it. Baseball will have to make the decision soon. The Cubs and Astros don't have a common day off after this.
For people claiming that they should play these games after the regular season, this will not only cost the Cubs their rotation if they make the playoffs but it could also prove to be unfair to the other teams in the hunt for the Wild Card spot if the Cubs already have the division locked up and decide to play their AAA players for the final games.
Honestly, and this isn't to discredit what the Astros have done in fighting back because I respect that but I don't think the Astros will be in it at the end of the season. They didn't suddenly inherit a starting rotation that could pitch. They just have a poor to average one that has gotten hot. They'll cool down soon.
And to all of the Astro fans talking smack about the Cubs...that's the equivalent of a younger fat guy calling an older fat guy a fatso. Sure, the older one has been fat longer but in the end, they're both fat slobs.

You right Ray Micheal... The New Orleans Saints had to play a home game against the New York Gaints right after 9/11. How much home field advantage you think the Saints had on that field? Things like this happen and all the Astros fans that are crying about home field advantage GOOD LUCK! Last time I checked the CUBS are one of the biggest markets in all sports, don't think Bud Selig cares about them cry baby Astros. Maybe they should have not sucked so much in the first 130 games and they wouldn't have to worry about licking the Cubbies feet right now..
