Big League Stew - MLB

Until Thursday, I had always assumed that hating Ichiro was on par with hating cinnamon rolls from your mother, baseball tickets from your father, a kiss from your wife or a tail wag from your dog.

In other words, it just wasn't done.

Of course, that was before the Seattle Times story about how some of Ichiro's teammates wanted to "knock out" everyone's favorite slap-singler came out, making me feel the type of discomfort I haven't felt since I was nine years old and my friend hit his father during a sleepover. Did that really just happen?

The Mariners played damage control on Thursday with J.J. Putz calling the clubhouse insider a "coward" and manager Jim Riggleman portraying the sniping for what it was — infighting and jealousy on a team that lost its 101st game on Thursday. No matter how nice or friendly the homecoming queen is, she's  still going to alway have a note calling her a b when she gets to her locker on Monday morning.

"We've lost so many games, so these types of things surface," Riggleman said in the Seattle Times. "When the ship is sinking, the rats are the first ones off. They're the ones scavenging everything on the ship when it's going good, but when it's sinking they're the first ones off."

Just a sneaky suspicion, but I'm betting the Mr. Anti-Ichiro won't be in the Mariners' clubhouse next spring. (Of course that'd mean the M's getting around to hiring a full-time general manager to sort things out, but that's another post for another day.)

This is totally infuriating. Ichiro plays Gold-Glove defense every year and does his job as a leadoff hitter - get on base, steal a base, score a run. If the M's had a few more players like Ichiro they wouldn't have lost 100+ games.

I'm a big Ichiro fan, but I'm not surprised by this, as he can rub people the wrong way, especially considering the rumor that the only reason McLaren was given a chance to manage was because he was Ichiro's boy. The special treatment (and deserved, considering he's a major investment for the team) would definitely piss off some players.
That said, if the M's wanna unload him, he's welcome in Flushing.

I've heard his teammates are mad that he'll pad his stats by bunting on base with 1 out with someone on. But i agree seattle looks pretty bad and I don't see it improving any time soon. Maybe they could get a couple key players if they trade him away.

Ichiro is self centered yes, but you cannot blame him for the way the team plays. The team plays so bad together that his only choice is to make himself look good. Anybody else would do the same thing. I would also say that the owners probably have him do this to keep people coming to see the Mariners because there aren't a whole lot of "W's" being give out in Seattle. It is what it is.

It is time Ichiro leave Seattle.
There are lots of teams out there that welcome treat him better.

Can you imagine what this guy would do if he were a yankee or red sox player? i'm talkin 125-130+ runs per year. the M's are pathetic and you can tell by Ichiro's numbers, the ones that he apparently cares so much about. this guy has scored 120+ ONCE in his marvelous MLB career. if he was so self-centered, he'd have never joined Seattle. he'll barely score 100 this year, and he on base was .362, respectable but not great, but well below his career number. he is the best leadoff hitter in the game, period, maybe of all-time, at least the best since brett butler and rickey; and he's way better than butler. not rickey, however.
he is welcome in SD any day!!!

I'm a Mariner's fan, and Ichiro has great stats. He is not a team player though. Runs scored and RBIs mean nothing to him. He won't move runners over unless there's a hit in it for him. He whines and complains when the manager tells him to take a pitch to allow runner from first to steal second. He says it distracts him from hitting and will often result in an intentional walk to him (i.e. one less at bat to get a hit). NOTE: Most managers will take free baserunners whenever they can get them. The fact that he doesn't score more often is also do to the fact that many of his stolen bases are nonproductive. With 2 outs, he'll steal second (productive as it puts him in scoring position on a single); then he'll steal 3rd (usually non-productive as a hit would have scored him anyway and any out makes him not score either way). Everyone says he is capable of stealing more and hitting for more power, but he won't attempt either, even when the situation says one should(1 run down, 8th inning, 1 out, runner on first for example). That's why he was a failure as a three hole hitter. He's like a ball-hog basketball player who shoots the ball 95% of his team's possessions and scores 45 points. The team scores 55 points but loses by 10 to the team that has 7 guys score 9-10 points apiece. I'd take Chone Figgins over him anytime. The best ballplayers make the rest of their team look better and Ichiro doesn't. No wonder they don't like his selfishness. TRADE HIM FOR PITCHING and the team will improve. Mariner's won't though, due to the PR and revenue headaches it would cause them.

One more note. Ichiro would not do better on the Yankees or Red Sox. Their slower, but powerful line-ups would cause many of his hits to become force-outs of another runner and cause his average to drop 25 points. Where he would have even better stats would be on a less powerful but speedier team like the Angels, the Twins, or Tampa Bay. They probably don't want him though, as their run-scoring comes from teamwork and they realize that even if he scores 15 more runs than who he bumps from the line-up and he keeps the remaining 8 line-up guys from scoring 25 runs, the net is -10 runs for the team (but his average might actually go up).

When your on a [profane]ty team for so long, its hard to play a "team" oriented style for very long. It happens in every sport, and Ichiro is hardly as bad as other notoriously selfish players.

Ichiro is one of the greatest lead off hitters ever. Seattle stinks ! If Ichiro really wasn't a team player, he would have forced a trade three years ago. A Hall of Famer on a triple A team.

If Ichiro doesn't like to take a pitch, why is he second on the team in walks? I know that's not saying much, considering that the Mariners are 29th out of 30 teams in walks, but still...
Every player on the Mariners needs to improve some aspect of his game, and "knocking out" Ichiro is not going to help. The number one thing a leadoff hitter has to do is get on base. Who else does that as consistently as Ichiro

Would welcome a JD Drew for Ichiro swap straight up..see how they (Seattle players and fans) like having a player (Drew) who is as dependable as a decade old battery in a vibrator.
