Big League Stew - MLB

Enduring the loss of a young teammate, along with other lesser but challenging adversities, the Los Angeles Angeles closed out their third consecutive AL West title with an 11-0 rout of the Texas Rangers on Monday night.

Behind a complete game by Ervin Santana(notes), along with offensive contributions from Maicer Izturis(notes) (3-for-4, 2 RBIs), Kendry Morales(notes) (HR, three RBIs) and Bobby Abreu(notes) (three hits), the Angels reached the playoffs for the sixth time in eight seasons under manager Mike Scioscia.

In the screen cap above, that's catcher Mike Napoli(notes) hugging Santana, who started the season with an elbow injury — one of many injuries decimating the pitching staff this season.

In the postgame celebration, teammates doused the jersey of Nick Adenhart(notes) with beer. Adenhart was killed in a car crash in April and the team has carried his No. 34 wherever it plays.

"He's in our hearts," teammate Gary Matthews said in a TV interview. "He's never far from us even when we're out there playing on the field. ... It's been a really trying year."

The Rangers' loss also reduced to 1 the Red Sox's magic number to clinch the wild card. Texas was in the hunt for the playoffs until wilting in September.

More to come ...

Was it really appropriate for them to douse Adenhart's jersey with beer, considering how Adenhart was killed. I understand remembering a teammate and having that teammate celebrate with you in spirit, but I'm sure there could have been other ways to honor him.

loved the fact that they all went out to centerfield to be with Nick and the fact that they drenched his jersey with champagne. I'm mighty proud of the team :)

Go Halos!!!! Hope they finally beat the Red Sox in October. I don't want another ALDS disappointment. I want to see a 2009 World Series flag hanging at the Big A next spring.

#1 trust me if he had lived, he would have been doused in champagne. They celebrate like he had been there.

I agree with the last couple posts. The fact that the entire team went out to center field to be right next to his picture speaks volumes. The Angels celebrated as if he were still with the team; good on them.

If anyone has anything to say about the way the angels celebrated with Nick's jersey, it would be his parents. But I'm sure they understand How much they loved and remember him game after game. His jersey went with the ball club to every game, hung in the dugout also. It was celebrated like if he was there. God Bless Nick and his parents. Go Angels!!

It was great how the Angels celebrated. All we need now is 2 more celebrations like this during this year.
