NEW YORK — Up until this week, Suzyn Waldman was best known for the histrionics she performed while announcing Roger Clemens' return in 2007.

But the Yankees broadcaster added a much better line to her resume during Wednesday's Game 1.

As she worked in the WCBS radio booth with John Sterling and with First Lady Michelle Obama at Yankee Stadium, Waldman became the first woman to broadcast a World Series game.

"Yeah, I'm very proud of this; I'm extremely proud of this,'' Waldman said to Newsday's Neil Best before the game. "This is very important to me. This is the World Series — it's the World Series. It doesn't get any more important, to me anyway, than this. So this is mine. This is something no one can ever take away.''

Waldman has worked with Sterling since 2005 and has often been the target of many slings and arrows from a critical public. While someone in her trailblazing position has to expect that type of negative feedback, she sometimes didn't do much to help her cause, like when she cried during Joe Torre's final game with the Yankees.

But those highly publicized incidents aside, I've usually enjoyed listening to Waldman when turning into the Yankees on satellite radio. She puts in a lot of work, knows what she's talking about and comes off much better than her bozo partner (which isn't that hard, but still).

Though being the first woman to work a World Series game is a cool enough achievement, what makes it even cooler that Waldman, a breast cancer survivor, entered the history books during breast cancer awareness month. Here's a big BLS head nod going Waldman's way.

I understand some people have to work and have no other option than to listen to the WS on the radio. What a disappointment to tune in only to hear it called by some screeching broad.

Are men allowed to be men anymore? Apparently not. Now a screeching voiced female (if they say she is) is intruding on yet another man thing. It's bad enough ESPN has female college football announcers (she ugly as well), now they invade further of OUR TURF. Enough is enough !!! And a Waldman to boot, go figure.

And the sexism continues (from reading the comments on this page!). Women should be treated equally in the sports world but they are not. They have to be smarter, work harder and close to perfection in order to even be looked at in the world of sports where men are clearly dominating. However I find a woman can sure as heck know what she is talking about! With that being said i think she deserves the same amount of respect as her male counterparts and should not be judged based on her gender but her skill. So if she is bad then don't blame it on the fact that she is a woman. How juvenile.
From one female fan to another Congrats ms Waldman!

In case you have never listened to a yankee on the radio, suzyn waldman is very knowledgeable about baseball. Give her credit. She knows her stuff. It shouldn't matter what someone looks like. It's how much they know. Most male sportscasters aren't exactly eyecandy. I'd much rather listen to suzyn than joe morgan drone on and on and on!
Unfortunately, for us Yankee fans, there wasn't much to listen to anyway. Yanks have the better ballclub, but that doesn't mean crap.

She's a woman, not an imitation man. And as a woman and a major sports fan, I see absolutely no problem with Waldman crying on the air when she reported about Joe Torre's going away speech. Crying when you're moved by something is a perfectly natural, human response, especially for women. That a generally feminine way of expressing being moved (e.g. crying) is being stigmatized as negative is bogus. It was sad that he was leaving. It was sad what he said and her expressing that translated the moment for me powerfully.

Waldman and Sterling both catch a lot of flak, but I think they do a great job. They've grown on me, maybe.

I listen to Susan and Sterling on ESPN 1100 in Las Vegas. John Sterling is an idiot; Miss Waldman is a very good baseball announcer.

Pretty sad when the most famous team in sports has the worst broadcasters in the world. Sterling is a bozo and regardless of how prepared she is, listening to Ms Waldman is like listening to Edith Bunker. An truly annoying and grating voice and brutal accent. Phil Rizzuto has a classic NY accent, but he wasn't nearly as unlistenable as Sterling and Waldman.

how new york, one of the greatest cities in the country, has such awful baseball announcers is astounding. sterling is a clown, and waldman IS FROM BOSTON! and those annoying little "hm"s when she's watching an injured player is just, like, listening to my grandmother watching the kids play. enough. fire them both and put sparky anderson and yogi in the booth.

Listening to the Yankees soundbites, you know this team lacks class. Who the hell announces like John Sterling (Tex Message, A-Bomb, Giambino, Robby Cano, dontcha know!) without class for an organization that tries to pride itself around one. The Yankees may be good on the field and get no respect for it, but until Mr. Steinbrenner figures out that his radio announcing crew is absolute trash, no one is going to respect this franchise.
If you want something with class, come and listen to a Giants Broadcast. Kruk and Kuip + John Miller know how to broadcast a game and aren't going to be complete buffons while doing so.
At least Sterling's partner, whoever his name is ("see ya!") knows how to do it. Why can't Sterling learn a thing or two from him about announcing the game the right way.
