Big League Stew - MLB

The topic of instant replay came up at the general manager meetings today, but conversation was apparently limited to the current system and did not touch upon expanding it past home run calls.

Instead, the stubborn general managers symbolically lined up behind commissioner Bud Selig in a stance that sees no use for making sure the game is called fairly and accurately.

I mean, it's enough to make a baseball fan run toward the nearest cement wall with his or her head lowered.

Jimmie Lee Solomon, one of Selig's guys, said the GMs were briefed by an umpiring official on training, evaluation and structure. I would guess that means that MLB is looking to make umpires more accountable for their calls.

And after the disasters of the just-passed postseason, I suppose that's good news.

But it's not nearly good enough. Though hell hath no fury like the baseball blogosphere piling on an umpire's blown call, I still believe that no one feels worse in the aftermath than the man in blue himself. Umpires aren't going to get more calls right because they're subject to a harsher penalty; they're already putting enough pressure on themselves as it is.

And since we live in a world of 78 camera angles per game and frame-by-frame replay, there's no way for an umpire to be 100 percent accurate and escape public ridicule.

Look, the technology could easily be there to provide a safety net for the human element on the field. It came through without much lost time during A-Rod's camera home run during Game 3 of the World Series and has been streamlined in almost every other sport.

Why not let it come through in other spots that are just as crucial?

Why must this be so difficult?

so what's wrong with having a fifth umpire (or eigth in the post season) who sits in the press box and who has the power to over rule the umpires on the field after reviewing a close play?

Human error has ALWAYS been part of this game. Right or Wrong, bang bang plays are just that, if he gets them wrong or right, so what? Stop letting TECHNOLOGY take over the game. You complain about performance enhancing drugs, well this is the same thing for umpires. Just let the boys in blue call the game the way it has been called since day one and FCK the cameras

We have the technology to fix human error why not use it the human element of the game should be between the pitcher and hitter and between the managers calls the fact umpires are alowed to blow calls is a joke besides look at other sports they are all using replay to fix calls and in baseball it would be easier because there is no pile ups like in football and players run to a single base at a time so positioning cameras should be easy any ways GO YANKEES LETS GO BUY ANOTHEER CHAMPIONSHIP

Technology gives us the ability to make stronger, faster athletes, so why don't we use that?
heres my point with replay in regards to the teams wanting it or not. These are the guys shelling out the millions of dollars for the players to get the wins and attract the fans and to turn the millions they've spent into millions earned. if this made the game better in any way I'm pretty sure they would have jumped all over the opportunity by now.

No one watches to see umps try to get calls right, they watch the players go against each other, so it ruins the experience when someone who should have won lost.

this is so stupid, the most important thing is to get the calls right conservative people are clinging on to the traditional form of baseball but instant replay has made football incredibly better and its foolish to continue to let calls be missed year after year especially in the postseason

I was watching the Japanese Series last week, and the umps completely blew a stolen base call at 2nd. They showed the replay once on TV, the announcers remarked that the runner looked safe, then the game moved on. As 'Duk says, we have "78" camera angles, and we see the replays multiple times while the announcers dwell on the call and hypothesize about what might have been if the umps got it right. If that's the way the American baseball experience is to continue, then MLB should at least discuss possible ways to extend replay.
However, the fact is that replay would spoil the live experience, which should be the focus of the 162 game season. Once you get to the post season, though, why not expand replay? They have extra umps for post season, so just use expanded replay for playoffs and World Series.

Has anyone watched a college football game lately? The Replays are absolutely killing the momentum of these games. It's painful enough on TV, but at the games I have attended it is so incredibly frustrating to stop and start. I think we've made it over 100 years without replay, I don't see why the blogosphere blowing up about a couple missed calls should send the owners/GMs into some kind of panic...

Baseball needs to come out of the 19th century already. Replay is a no-brainer. Just goes to show the intellegence level of the sport.

It's not as simple as just calling for replay. In some cases, like a home run, you can easily overturn it (or an out at first with nobody on). But in a lot of plays, the way the players react following a call would be completely different had the call been made the other way. Like a fair-foul call in the outfield. You can't always just overturn those calls. In the Twins-Yankees game for instance (and forgive me if I'm remembering this wrong). The ump called foul on the clearly fair ball to the outfield. Then of course the outfielder, based on that call, declined to make a play, and baserunners stopped running. If it had been overturned the umpires would still be stuck with imperfect human judgment and have to make their best guess as to where runners would have ended up had the call been correct and the play happened. What happens if there's a fast runner on first in that situation. Do the umps award him a run then? Maybe he would have scored, maybe he would have been thrown out at the plate. Those kinds of subjective judgments could change games too. And no one would be satisfied if they just called a do-over. I'm not saying I'm completely against instant replay, but it would change the game a lot more than some of its supporters seem to think it would.

Tim...While I agree in general with the spirit of your comment, the Mauer ball bounced directly into the stands with no opportunity to make a play on it.
But the point of your argument makes sense...How can we overturn a call (even a fair/foul call) when the initial call altered everyone's conduct. It's the same when a runner is ruled down by contact on the field and fumbles. The whistle blows the play dead...what are the players supposed to do, and how is an umpire supposed to predict what would have happened if the play continued?

i would only expand replay in playoff games for certain calls, baseball is already slow enough and 1 blown call in 1 out of 162 regular season games probably isnt going to matter.

#1 Peter, how would you know the difference between a 3 hr 20 minute game and a 3 hr 25 minute game? Crappy argument.
How would we ever expect the owners and the owner/commish to do anything that isn't stupid? I mean, come on, look at their history...

No replay! Look at what replay has done to football. It is ruining the game and they STILL don't get the calls right. Replay is not the answer. What they need to do is train the umpires better.

The only reason the yankees won is because they did not have instant replay.... most of those calls were in favor of the yankees.........not only that the yankees play in a t----ball park....most of those homeruns would not be homeruns in other parks ...they would be outs and could have resulted in alot more loses.
Bub Selig should be replaced if he does not go for instant replay.................this years playoffs and world series was the worst in baseball history......Yankees should not even been there!!!

technology is being used for everything these days. As long as humans remain in control what is the problem? Watching your team lose on a terrible call is idiotic. And having your team win on a bad call brings in feeling of guilt, unless one has some type of behavioral disorder. Get the calls right, I don't pay over a hundred bucks a ticket to watch the umps screw-up, I pay to watch a game with the best baseball players in the world going head to head in a competition, and if they want to keep taking my money, they need to invest in getting the calls correct. As the game gets faster and faster, the umps get worse and worse, and they probably are the best umps in the world. When we can communicate with each other here, all around the world, they need to get instant, perhaps instantaneous replay.

I am for instant replay. If you want to speed up the game, do not let batters step out of the batter's box after every pitch. Prohibit multiple meetings between catchers and pitchers during the game. Instant replay is needed especially in post season games. The umpiring has never been worse and I have been watching baseball games for 50 yrs. Playoff games should not be won or lost by bad calls. It also keeps the umpires "honest". Who is to say an umpire is not being paid to throw a game? The camera technology exists today where it did not years ago. It should be used. To not use it threatens the very integrity of the game.

They have to forget the umps feelings and put instant replay like in football 2 per game for each team. Also I think they should shorten the season to 154 games and add another round to the playoffs instead of 4 teams on each division maybe 6 best teams in each division the 2 best get a bye the 1st round can be called wild card series best of 5. The Divisonal series would be 7 games just like the league series and the world series.

officiating or lack of played a huge role in the alcs..look at youeks two obvious tags at first base in the red sox-angles series and the one sided calls on the pitching...lester and papelon got reamed on umps not calling it both ways...angels like yankee's got a free ride to alds but yankee's were heavily favored..i don't care what anyone says they got babied clear to the end and were handed championship series on a silver platter....piss poor officiating or lack of it gave a-roid and crew the nod in wininng....had replay on some questionable calls been looked at again and officiating been more objective we should have had a better world series than we did...i felt it was tainted by the officiating not going both ways.........
