Big League Stew - MLB

As expected, the Giants swallowed their pride and sent Barry Zito and his $126 million contract to the bullpen on Monday night. He is officially now the highest-paid reliever in MLB.

However, my man Mike Oz of the Fresno Bee wants to take things even further and make Zito the highest-paid minor leaguer. Yes, in Oz's world, it would make perfect sense to bring Zito almost 200 miles to Fresno and make him a permanent member of the Grizzlies, the Giants' AAA-affiliate.

Oz's case, from the Fresno Beehive:

In San Francisco, Barry Zito is just another hippie with an acoustic guitar and an 80-mph fastball. In Fresno, he could be a God ... Picture it: Zito could use that absurd $126 mill contact of his to buy the Security Bank Building and live on whatever floor he wished that day. He could play his guitar at Cafe Corazon on the days he's not pitching. Heck, he could even be mayor ...

The rest of baseball is mocking Barry Zito. But in Fresno, we know how it feels to be mocked. Together, Fresno and Zito could form like Voltron and rise up as one powerful force. It could the greatest curveball that Barry Zito ever threw.

Since I'm assuming they don't send AP photogs to Grizzlies games, this just might work.

yeah except Frank Thomas is still good. I think its evident now that Toronto is eating the dill weed out of the bottom of the AL East barrel. Any comparison between Frank Thomas and Barry Zito is retarded.

San Francisco isnt going to cut him because then they would have to eat the remainder of zito's contract....and that would really hurt. Right now they are going to get as much value from him as possible and hope they can fix his problem be they mental or physical.

They cant release him, he has a guaranteed contract they would still have to pay him........Thank God The Mets lost out on him..........They would be stuck with him and wouldn't have had the money to pay Santana.....The Yankees will probably trade for him they good at getting washed up expensive pitchers ala Clemens last year.

"and that would really hurt..." You don't think the 0-6 start, the fact that SF's attendance is down 15%, that even the kayak rental business is off 75% doesn't hurt? Peter McGowan needs to show Zito the door, do the same with Brian Sabean and do what is right. That is, stay with the young kids, let them develop, rebuild the farm system and project for the future. Look, even the managment of the Gigantes felt that this was NOT a playoff year going in, so, let the kids amaze us for awhile. Make Bochy teach and coach...sure he was a winner with the Padres, the management there handed him a team he could win with, not here, that is for sure. James N saying to "call that roid head bonds back up" is THE most rediculous statement so far. Look at the A's for cripes sake! Billy Beane dropped another superstar this past winner when he sent Swisher to the White Sox and stayed with what works...YOUTH and they are tied with Anaheim for 1st place with half the payroll! That's it! There's the answer! Have McGowan read Beane's book and hire a GM that does THAT! In 3 years the Giants are playoff contenders again and it will be "Sabean, Bond, Bochy, Zito WHO?" Hum baby!

Let's give Zito a break. He needs to go back to the basics. Somewhere in between all the guitar lessons and yoga sessions, he lost his famous curve ball.

I hate to say it but he may have had some of "The clear". Look at his three good seasons 2000-2002 then he tapers off and then levels out. Who was on his team with him? Tejada, Giambi. Now maybe he just peaked early and is on the slide but maybe he was average to begin with and just got some help from some teammates, wink wink.

"He needs to learn how to pitch like Jamie Moyer" haha...
But seriously, a great example as to why no athlete is worth that much, especially one that only plays every 5 games. They are stuck with that contract situation. After this start of the season, trading him wouldn't be much of an option because the team getting him would require the Giants to pay a portion of his contract. Cutting him means they would have to pay the whole thing anyways, so you might as well make him eat up a few early middle innings. The guy makes 450K-500K a start... penalize him... 50K for a ND, 100K for a loss, and 250K if you flat out suck and only last into the 3rd or 4th, how is that?
BUT this guy was a top 10 draft pick, an AL Cy Young winner, and considered an ace... the potential is there...
If you look at his stats, he has a career BAA .236 which is pretty damn good... but his walks are up this year, which tells me he just needs to throw more pitches in the strike zone because batters aren't chasing, tell that to his catcher... he's not a strikeout artist, especially at this stage in his career, which means heed needs some help from his defense... but oh wait, 6 UNearned runs in starts 2, 3, and 4... with some help from his offense, he/they could of won 2 of those... if he can throw that curve ball and get 10 groundball outs a game, he would be fine... not a fan of the guy, but good luck to him... have fun in court/surfing next summer

It's amazing that it has taken this long for the Giants to realize that Zito was and never has been an Ace pitcher. All that he was ever good for on the A's was as a relief pitchers...that is how he was brought up from the River Cats in Sacrament. The boy is good for 3 innings and that is about it...nothing has ever changed The Giants are just complete idiots in how they budget themselves!!!!! I doubt Zito cares that much he is the one picking up the phat check at the end of the day...who is the real idiot here, cause it's not Zito!

This is why the A's will continue to be competitive and the Giants will never, ever, with a World Series. $126 million for a player that plays every 5th day? Crazy.
