After the Aussies throttled Mexico 17-7 in the WBC on Sunday, manager John Deeble called it "the best win ever for Australian baseball." But a quick look at the Herald Sun's 'sport page' on Monday afternoon didn't reflect the apparent gravity of the achievement. The game recap was way down the page, buried below a story about rugby officials thinking that their players were drinking too much after matches.
To be fair, I clicked on the rugby drinking story first, too. But I thought it was worth pointing out that, contrary to popular belief, the United States isn't the only place where the WBC is playing second fiddle to other news stories.
Not surprisingly, if you check out La Gazzetta dello Sport today, it takes more than a couple of finger scrolls to find out about Italy's upset win over Canada on Monday night.
A big BLS head nod to our own Gordon Edes for pointing us Down Under.
