Evening Shade: Sweeney threatens Weaver treatment to snitches

• Today was the first day for the Seattle Mariners to respond to the report that Ken Griffey was asleep in the clubhouse during a pinch-hit opportunity and Mike Sweeney(notes) didn't have any trouble standing up for his elder teammate.

The devout Christian who once bullrushed Jeff Weaver(notes) says he challenged the Safeco Field deep throats to stand up and fight him, but no one took him up on the offer. Pity, too, because Mike Sweeney's a man! He's 40!

• Griffey, meanwhile, wouldn't confirm or deny the reports about his sleeping habits, but did say that unspecified parts of it were inaccurate. Seattle Times

Mariners at Orioles, 7:05 ET Oh yeah, there's a game tonight. Griffey, his .208 average and a bottle of No-Doze are slated to hit seventh for Seattle. Look alive out there, Junior!

Padres at Giants, 10:15 Wade LeBlanc(notes) and Barry Zito(notes) will face off in what's the best pitching matchup of the night by far. No, really, they will. No sarcasm tag.

• The Braves are going to retire Tom Glavine's(notes) No. 47 in a ceremony later this year. AP

Nationals at Mets, 7:10 I'm still too busy admiring my Citi Field trash dump work to have a real opinion on this one. Talk about Scott Olsen(notes) and Jon Niese among yourselves.

• It would and should never happen, but I still ike the fact that someone came up with the idea of Stephen Strasburg(notes) making his big league debut in the All-Star Game. Gaslamp Ball
