Most weekday evenings, Big League Stew looks at five approaching
games worth monitoring. As they occur, feel free to discuss the night's
happenings with other Stewies in the comment section below.
Blue Jays at Red Sox 7:10 ET I have no earthly idea why I decided on a Roger Clemens(notes) motif for this post (other than I still have a hard time believing that the whole Clemens-in-Toronto era ever really happened, Cy Youngs or not). Tonight's matchup features Brian Tallet(notes) going against Tim Wakefield(notes) and the Blue Jays have a chance to stretch their AL East lead over the Red Sox to 4.5 games. The other main storyline? David Ortiz(notes) is back from his breather and will be batting third in Boston's lineup. Smart move by Terry Francona? Only if it works, of course.
A's at Rays, 7:08 As I mentioned last week, there was probably no better prescription for the Rays' effort to get back to .500 than a four-game series against Cleveland. Now that they're at the even-water mark (20-20), there's probably no better chaser than four at home against Oakland. The Rays won the series opener with a blowout on Monday; tonight they'll be counting on James Shields(notes) to regain his mojo after a few bad starts.
Phillies at Reds, 7:10 This is hands down the best pitching matchup of the night with a resurgent Cole Hamels(notes) (1-2, 5.04) taking on young Johnny Cueto(notes) (4-1, 1.93) at Great American Ballpark. In four career starts against Cincinnati, Hamels is 3-0 with a 0.60 ERA. Cueto, meanwhile, has thrown five straight quality starts, going 4-0 with a 1.25 ERA.
Mets at Dodgers, 10:10 Baseball fans who stayed up late to watch this one on Monday night were rewarded with a wacky and wild ending, thanks to Ryan Church(notes) & Co, so why not roll the dice? At the very least, you'll get to see if Chad Billingsley(notes) (5-1, 2.30) can add to his NL Cy Young resume while we all not-so-secretly wish that it was Johan Santana(notes) — and not John Maine(notes) — taking the mound for the Mets.
Pirates at Nationals, 7:05 But only if you're into the whole masochism thing.

John Q. Public wants to boo and hiss at you? Just win some games for his favorite team and you'll be in good graces. I hear the Mets could use Clemens.

CITO and Joe Carter are going to win it all again (well, maybe CITO). All this on a AAA pitching staff less Halladay of course.

There are 162 games, and only about 40 have been played... oh yes the Red Sox are done for sure, no doubt buddy.

Hamels-Cueto: 13 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 11 K, 62% strikes
Pineiro-Lilly......: 16 IP, ..7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 10 K, 68% strikes
Dontrelle wasn't too shabby over in the other league, giving up only 1 H in 6 innings (19 AB). But after Soriano was picked off 1B by Cardinal catcher Yadi Molina, and D. Lee was erased on a DP, Pineiro gave up only 1 H in the last 24 batters he faced (innings 2-9), completing his shutout by retiring the last 13 Cubs he faced (end of inning 5-9).
Yahoo's game recap (Associated Press?) provides good description of how good Pineiro was in other ways, too. (It errs in attributing the go-ahead run to Rasmus's 2-R HR [5th inning or so], whereas Yadi's RBI single in the 1st actually filled that role.) Anyway, that was the best I've ever heard (on the radio) Pineiro pitch--just stellar.
