Big League Stew - MLB

My first reaction to ESPN's "Ball Tracker" was, "Why are they adding animated fireworks to the home runs? Ooh, that one's pretty (VIDEO)."

I also considered that Michael Bay might be directing the show, determined to entertain confuse viewers into believing asteroid debris was slamming into St. Louis. Just a little "Armageddon" — not the end of the world.

Finally, I realized: The NHL on Fox had taken over the broadcast and was making every fly ball glow like a hockey puck. No longer would fans lose sight of a white ball's trajectory as it streaked into the black night. Casual Canadian fans — already alienated as they rushed to convert "503 feet" into meters before the next swing — could now comfortably watch a baseball broadcast without wondering where the devil the puck ball disappeared to.

What did you think of the light show during the Home Run Derby?

Some of the homers Prince Fielder(notes), Albert Pujols(notes) and Nelson Cruz(notes) hit were the size of footballs and Volkswagens by the time they landed in Manhattan (above, left). My screen's full! They're all over the place!

How do fans of today's NHL get by without the glowing puck? Thanks to Fox TV back in the day, the puck heated up to 644 degrees (centigrade) whenever Sergei Fedorov would hit a slapper, such as this one in the '96 All-Star Game (above, right).

Ryan Howard(notes) watches himself watch himself watching himself hit a home run that is just on fire as it flies over the right-field fence.

It was even more difficult to track the balls with the added streaks. My eyes automatically tracked the streak (which didn't even seem to be all that accurate) and I wound up losing the ball even worse than before.

they didn't really use it that much. one or two per hitter if i remember right. although the demonstration of it they showed in the pre-derby stuff was really smooth and wasn't all twitchy like the in-derby ones, so that kinda ruined it.

Watching the grounds crew would have been more exciting than watching that piss poor display of so called power hitters. What a joke.

@5: They just didn't use it for Nelson Cruz (who?) Prince Fielder (Midwest guy, no-one cares) or Brandon Inge (didn't hit any homers). Now, once Ryan Howard came up to bat, they suddenly had the technology sorted out. I believe five of his seven blasts got the glowing puck treatment.
ESPN must have been seething that there were no Sawx, Mets or Yanks in the Derby.

I had no idea homers had the trajectory of knuckle balls! It was like a 4-year old was in charge of 'tracking'. That was truly pathetic. But that's to be expected from a network which thinks Chris Berman is a good announcer; I mean how many times did he say 'bat off' when it said 'swing off' right there in the 3-way tie after 1st round. God what idiots.

What drove me crazy was the kids making those pointless diving stops when the catcher would toss the ball aside. It's cool that they're having fun, but get them to move so they're not on the screen. They were quite a distraction.

This wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't looked so terrible. I always thought the occasional trackers that they use on golf broadcasts were decent. Maybe using them in similar circumstances, like from behind the batter, would've worked okay. As it was, yuck.
