Big League Stew - MLB

After repeatedly frittering away their chances to clinch, the Dodgers' magic number finally reached zero with a 5-0 victory against the Rockies on Saturday night. A five-game losing streak is no more, as is the threat of L.A. turning into the wild card. The division-clinching champagne can be sprayed.

Clayton Kershaw(notes) (above) found himself locked in a scoreless pitchers duel with Jorge De La Rosa(notes) and — after De La Rosa injured his groin in the fourth inning — Jose Contreras(notes), but the Dodgers broke through with a five-run seventh inning against left-hander Franklin Morales(notes). Ronnie Belliard's(notes) RBI single got them started and even Manny Ramirez(notes) — who struck out four times Friday night — got into the action by driving in the fifth run.

Closer Jonathan Broxton(notes) was on the mound for the last out, Garrett Atkins'(notes) fly out to Andre Ethier(notes).

Had the Dodgers lost the division to the Rockies, who were 15 1/2 games back on June 3, it would have been the biggest collapse in major league history. It seemed agonizing, manager Joe Torre said, but they got it done after clinching a playoff spot a week ago.

"We were some of those people who didn't think it came soon enough. We were on the brink last Sunday against Pittsburgh," said Torre, who won his 13th division crown. "It never gets old. Just to see these men turn into little boys. As Roy Campanella said, you have to have some little boy in you to play this game."

The Rockies settle for the wild card and will open the playoffs later this week at Philadelphia. The Dodgers host the Cardinals in their NLDS.

More to come soon!

Go Blue! They did it. And yes, this past week has been difficult, but look at them. They have home-field and now, they have this hiccup out of the way. Better to have it now than later. They'll be just fine. What a collective effort tonight. Now they can breathe and ready for the playoffs. Yeah! Division winners. Home-field advantage. Stepping stones for '09!! I cannot wait!

Serious problems against bottom dwellers lately is not a good sign. Home field helps, but if you're a Dodger fan, you're sh#*ing a brick right now. I'll say they lose the first series based on they're latest performances. What a shameful ending that would be. Singing the Dodger blues. Uh oh.

Go Dodgers!!! I am happy that the DODGERS are going to the playoffs with the Best Record in the National League, but I do worry that if they continue playing sour, they wont make it past the first round. Kemp is struggling, so is Manny. I dont worry about Manny as much as Kemp we need Kemp!!!!
I think the dodgers have a good chance at the Cardinals even though they were only 2 and 5 against them in 7 games, but as i remembered there were a few games that were very close only 1 to 2 runs difference so the Dodgers can do it!!

The postseason is a totally different story. Remember last year? The two teams who entered red hot and with each league's best records (the Angels and Cubs) were both bounced in the first round.

Hard to believe the NL playoffs are starting this week with all three division winners slumping on the way in. Only the Rockies (despite last night's loss) have the look of a team that can put a stretch together that will win in October... that is, until one of their starters went down last night. Honestly, the NL playoffs will be exciting in that nobody really knows what might happen. Any of them can get hot and ride it out, or cool off and go home early. I can't wait to watch!

Had the Dodgers not clinched the NL West, I don't think that would be a collapse. They would still have the Wild Card. For a true collapse, look at the Mets of 07 and 08. And yeah, a 3-7 record over the last ten games doesn't look great, but the Cardinals, a likely first round opponent, have the exact same record. The Phillies aren't much better at 4-6.
