Just how powerful is this squirrel phenomenon getting with the St. Louis Cardinals?
Powerful enough to get Tony La Russa to drop his usual public persona and have some fun after the Cards' huge NLDS win over Philadelphia.
Asked by TBS' Craig Sager whether we'd be seeing the squirrel return for the NLCS against the Milwaukee Brewers, La Russa responded with a quote for the ages.
Please, Tony, no gibberish tonight.
No gibberish, we beg of you.
"Well as long as that Miss Squirrely keeps dating, uh, Craig's Mr. Torty," La Russa said. "I just think we should get 'em a suite because we don't want them to interrupt the game. The problem is that Craig hadn't been playing. I think the squirrel was looking around for Torty because Torty was looking around for Craig. I don't know, that's nonsense."
Yes, he really did say that. You can watch the actual quote here at the 1:05 mark.
If you've been paying attention to the ongoing squirrel story, you might actually be able to interpret what La Russa was saying. During a press conference on Thursday, La Russa threw the blame for the outbreak on Allen Craig's famous pet tortoise.
Why? I have no idea.
"I actually want to meet the tortoise," La Russa said. "The squirrel, too."
If La Russa keeps talking this way and I'm sure the nice men in the white jackets will be more than glad to arrange for it. Tell him 'bout the rabbits, Albert!
