Big League Stew - MLB

As the rugged life within the "Highlander" realm taught us, there can be only one team strong enough to hoist the Commissioner's Trophy after the World Series ends. Everyone else? Thanks for playing, but you go home empty handed and, perhaps, without your head, too.

Or do you?

What kind of a team can find solace or a sense of accomplishment even if they're not the ultimate king of the hill?

For the Cubs in '08, it was World Series champs or bust. Now they're busted again, for the 100th time in a row and some fans aren't very happy

The Red Sox, despite two recent titles, don't call any season a success unless they finish No. 1.

So which major league team — if any — can walk away "a winner" this season despite having no chance of being the last one standing?

The Milwaukee Brewers, that's who.

In order to secure the team's first playoff bid since 1982, general manager Doug Melvin traded one of its top prospects (though not its best, Mat Gamel) to land CC Sabathia. The deal helped the Brewers sell out a bunch of games, even ones in which CC did not pitch, and surpass 3 million fans. This, despite the Greater Milwaukee area being 38th in the country in total population.

Then there was the move to fire manager Ned Yost with 12 games to go in the season.

The Brew Crew went 7-5 down the stretch — not exactly reminding anyone of the Molitor and Yount teams of yore — but were just good enough to reach the playoffs. Milwaukee only beat Philadelphia once in the NLDS, but the victory came at home and the hometown fans were treated to two postseason games. Yes, the Brewers are baseball's unofficial runners-up, just for getting within a whiff of the promised land.

Now Wisconsin just needs to sell enough cheese to afford CC's impending free-agency.

But what about the other teams we haven't mentioned  that made the playoffs? How are they supposed to feel if their season doesn't end with a World Series title? A look at each scenario comes after the jump, listed in ascending order of "accomplishment:"

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim blew the doors off the rest of the AL West in the regular season, for which all of their moms must be proud. But Arte Moreno bought a reigning World Champion in '03 and is still wondering when he'll get the satisfaction the organization felt in '02.

The Philadelphia Phillies have won their first postseason series since 1993, and considering Philly's playoff history — don't look, it's not good — someone should have already patted them on the back. But if they fall to whack the Dodgers in the NLCS, the City of Brotherly Love will turn back into the Village of Gloomy Guses.

The Chicago White Sox won one game in their series against the Tampa Bay Rays and weren't all that close to winning another, much less three, but it was still one more than the Cubs. Sox fans will use anything to needle Cubs fans. The Cubs playoff implosion provides plenty of fuel but the Sox had zero expectations — they were predicted by most to finish third or fourth in the AL Central — and did better by a game.

The Los Angeles Dodgers should feel as though they validated and amplified upon their undeniably mediocre regular season with a three-game spanking of the Cubs. They also hadn't won a playoff series since '88. Manny and Torre have brought the big names back to L.A. ball.

Most folks ignored the Rays in May and June, and figured by August or September that the Red Sox (and even the Yankees or Blue Jays) would catch them. Didn't happen, of course, and the Rays have taken the franchise ahead a few light years. Even though the Rays aren't acting like they're playing with house money and even though they'll be disappointed if they don't win the World Series, they can already feel safe in filing '08 under 'successful season.'

I think one could argue that Baltimore had a successful season as well. Yeah they finished dead last, but there were a few months in there where they played successful ball.

"The Los Angeles Dodgers should feel validated .... "?
by what? doing their best imitation of the NY Yankees???
absorbing the wasted signing Andruw Jones, Esteban Loaiza and Jason Schmidt, et al?
or by hook or crook, strong arming desperate GM's in two leagues into GIVING them their un-wanted over-paid "stars"?
    how?

I consider this season to be a success - all my life I've been waiting for the Brewers to make post-season or at least finish over .500. Last year? Oveer .500. This year? Postseason. I came away from the last game glad that the Brewers won one post season game, made it to the postseason, and reignited the excitement of the Brew Crew fans.

jwolfemusic, you are certainly a "glass half full" guy! Their pitching was a total joke, perhaps help is on the way, but the crew (other than Guthrie) showed no signs of life. One or two streaks to keep you from losing 100 games is hardly reason for optimism.

Of the teams in the post season -
LAA - I would have to consider this a bust for them - 100 wins and lost to the banged up Red Sox
Brewers - This is definitely a successful season
Philly win or lose - they have to be happy with their season and can call it a success
LA Dodgers - God how I hate the Dodgers, but give them props they beat the Cubs in dominating fashion. Even if they lose the series vs Philly it would be a successful season.
Rays - Are you kidding me, we ALL know the answer to this one - win or lose
Cubs -right up there with the Angels, absolutely no excuses
WS - IMHO, they had no business being there - The Twin would have at least shown up
As for my beloved Red Sox - I would say this has been a successful season. Not the way they would have hoped, winning the Division was one of the goals that wasn't achieved. But win or lose vs TB the Red Sox have to be really proud of what the accomplished this year. They have been banged up for majority of the season. And if they can make it back to the WS with Lowell - that woud just be icing on the cake.

Winning the division is always an accomplishment, but the Brewers performance in September was really poor and coupled with last year, you've got a problem that probably won't go away. The 7-5 in the last 12 is by no means a overwhelming when 9 were against Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and a resting Cubs. Enjoy what you did, but don't kid yourselves when evaluating what happened, the Mets went 3-5 over the last eight and that's why you got it.. And the performance against Philly only reinforces that you were a good team (and there are many of them) that wasn't PS worthy, I mean SOMEONE had to get it.

jwolfe seriously???? Baltimore? What was a success for them again? Why not just say the Nationals for being able to put their uniforms on or the Padres for finding the stadium for each game.
The Angels blew away the division this year because the AL West sucks and only has 4 teams. 1 ouf of 4 chance of making the playoffs. Scioscia is a good manager but the team no longer has the desire to win like they did in 2002. Not making the playoffs for a few years may give the young bucks more desire... like the Rays.
The teams that repeatedly make the playoffs and win championships (like NY (past) and YES... Boston now) is even more impressive and getting harder to do each year... while I root for the Rays to stop Boston (Yankee fan) if the Sox make it happen again we will all have to bow to their ability. But .... GO RAYS!!!! and if need be... GO Phils or Dodgers!!!!

I see your point and agree with most of what you said. But lets give the Brewers some credit here, last year they slumped in August, this year they slumped in Sept and still made the post season. I don't care if it was vs the Reds, Pirates and a so called resting cubs. They still had to go out and beat these teams, which they did!
The Mets blew the division lead and wild card 2 straight years with slumps in september. But they still had a chance to win the wild card and choked at home vs the Marlins. The same team that did them in last year.
So what we have is 2 slumping teams that slumped late in back to back years. Only difference is the Brewers are a young and inexperienced team. While the Mets were experienced and had playoff experience. So they knew what needed to be done. They just couldn't get the job done, Brewers however, were able to.
Now there will be no excuses for the Brew Crew next year. The reached the playoffs and even won 1 game. So the experience will be there, they know what the have to do to get back there.

only cub fans feel the need to try and rain on the brewers parade. But guess what losers, the cardinals, white sox, and BREWERS have better post season records then your pathetic useless team the last half of a decade. Ah... thats right, so do the astros.

#15 The Mets didn't give us anything. Yes they lost, but we still had to win our games. In the three games we played against the Cubs, all but one they started their normal starters.

There's something to be said about a low-budget team like the Brewers going as far as they did this year. Yea, teams like the Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees are EXPECTED to be there, so its sweet when they totally flop like the Cubs did this year!!! We'll see what kind of 'talent' the big money Cubs bring in to end the 100+ year curse next year. As far as all those "It's Gonna Happen " banners all their fans held up in the stands this year, all that's gonna happen is another year of CHOKING when it counts. Go Rays!!!!!!

Pretty well written article outside of the cliche Cheese reference........
We're the Brewers for jeebus's sake. Can't we at least go with selling frothy brew?
As for Brewers fans, I myself wasn't born the last time the Brewers took the mound in a playoff game. Throughout my childhood, people would actually groan at the mention of the team. Year after year they'd get romped game after game. These last few years have been different. Fans have had hope. They've come out in massive numbers compared to years past to support their playoff push. This year that all paid off. It sounds sad, mainly because it is in the grand scheme of things, but getting into the playoffs WAS our World Series. For the first time in 26 years we're relevant.

Milwaukee made great strides in '08 and have an impressive nucleus that is capable of even better things to come shortly down the road. They have discovered & employed a pair of Superstars in Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder who are very young and have years of high level productivity on the horizon and then "plenty of" some.. They broke a 26 year post season drought this year and the last time they did in 1982 the team employed 3 future Hall of Famers at the time. This is a good ball club. Much better than the Brewers have seen in years.

JQCIN, since you unabashedly referred to 'us' it really doesn’t surprise me that you see it that way. Doesn’t make it so. I have no dog in this fight, just looking at it objectively. To describe Milwaukee’s performance in September as mediocre is generous and explains their performance vs. Philly.
I really liked it when the Brewers totally sucked, kinda like GB from 1970 to 1992. So much more tolerable when they are irrelevant. Seems Wis. fans insist on the rest of the country loving their teams, ballparks, traditions (leaps & untucks), goofy dog paw logos, etc. Give us a break, please.

The Angels had games 2 and 4 in the bag, even game 1. Game 4, Howie makes the routine double play, they win the game. We all know the "bloop single" from Jacoby that should have been caught, even though they won. The Angel pitchers pitched almost perfect ball, but the defense let them down. If the defense was like it was in the regular season, we would be playing game 5, fact.

goofy dog paw logos??? Can you please explain that? If you are referring to the Brewers logo. It is a M and B. I don't care if other people don't like the teams I like, but I will stand up for them when I see the need. I don't jump on bandwagons like most of the nation. Also, I bet you can't find a fan of a team that doesn't refer to the team as "us" at some point.
    Must be jealous.

To address the question your headline asks, definitely. There are 30 teams. So, only ONE has a successful season- the World Series winner? And the other 29, whether they lose 100 games or only win 3 in the World Series, it's all bad?
That's the stuff of sports radio blowhards. Of course it's not true. After 26 years I have to think Brewer fans were thrilled to see playoff baseball. Speaking as a Pirates fan, I just want to see them finish over .500- THAT would be a very successful season in Pittsburgh. It's all relative.
