Big League Stew - MLB

Over the past few postseasons, the wait between rounds has been good for a great number of things: Writing the great American novel, growing a gigantic beard and conceiving children before seeing them off to college.

It has not, however, been good for baseball, a sport that values the rhythm of everyday play and the benefits of a deep pitching staff. Last month, the Yankees and Angels finished their division series on a Monday, but didn't face off until the following Friday. That led Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia to publicly gripe the league and television networks were threatening the integrity of the game by dragging their feet.

At any rate, Scioscia's words must carry some weight at MLB HQ because Bud Selig spoke on the issue and admitted a problem at the owner's meetings in Chicago on Wednesday.

Here's what the commissioner told reporters:

"We're going to change it. I don't disagree with Mike Scioscia. I think he was right, so we're going to try and tighten that up. When you plan the playoff schedule, you don't know how many games the first round would go. So it's difficult. There were clubs that sat around. Some were necessary, but some were not."

Here's a big BLS head nod to Selig for finally recognizing a big fault, but I'm going to reserve full praise until we actually see a plan in place. While it wouldn't seem that hard to be flexible after division series end in sweeps, television is still calling the shots and it would seem that good ratings would mean that Fox is quite happy with the World Series start coming on a Wednesday. (The quickest and easiest fix would be to eradicate that silly off-day between Games 4 and 5 in the LCS. Without travel, there's no need for it.)

Does Bud actually have the authority to tell Fox to move the World Series up a few days after both the ALCS and NLCS end in four or five games? Past experience would say no, but we'll see what schedule magic the commish has up his sleeve before passing judgment.

Does Bud have the authority to tell FOX what to do?
One would surely hope so, if it werent for the fact that FOX essentially owns the MLB

Ok, this whole thing seems predicated on the start date of the World Series. Fox doesn't want it on a Saturday. My question is why does the regular season need to end on a Sunday? Can't they just say the World Series will start on a Wednesday (or whatever day they decide) and then calculate the end of the regular season from that?

This is why baseball needs an indepenant commissioner who will do what is best for the game. Selig is an owner and a lackey of the owners and does what is best for the owners. David Stern and Roger Goddell are not owners and do what is best for their respective leagues. I am sure that the owners in the NFL don't like it when Goddell suspends a star player but he is doing it for the league.

I guess it depends on how Fox's contract is written, but the commish better have the authority in scheduling. You can't allow a network to run the league. The off days are ridiculous and you can't damage the integrity of the sport to bow to a network or ratings.

only days off should be the first 2 days after the regular season, and after any game 2 and any game 5.
example: reg season ends, day off, day off, LDSgame 1, game 2, day off, game 3, game 4, game 5, day off, LCS game 1,etc....
also stagger the last day of the regular season. Saturday for NL, Sunday for AL..or something similar

Let's see how it all pans out, since FOX has had the playoffs the ratings have been in declination until this year, and still they were poor numbers.
That's what happens when a channel people only watch two or three hours a day has the rights to MLB games. And now with cable channel (TBS) being the other half for the playoffs, the future of MLB looks dark.

I'm sure the commissioner can tell FOX MLB is changing the schedule as long as MLB is willing to accept FOX changing the schedule on how much $ FOX is going to pay for the playoffs.

With the direction Bud's game is currently heading, won't be long and the Yankees will have all the name players on their roster because no other team can pay those salaries. He can then make it real short, just hand the trophy to NY after each season. Baseball blows.

Selig is doing his usual dance. Agree with a logical point of change. Say publicly that he is going to do something about it (so he looks good), then let it fall by the wayside. David Hill and FOX run the sport. Unless Bud is going to return some of the money FOX pays the owners, this will not change.

Why not let TBS have the NL home games & FOX have the AL home games. I myself belive that TBS does a pretty darn good job. Much better anouncers.

Playing the World Series the last week of October and into November is pure foolishness and pure greed. Too many playoff games.....too late in the year....all the hype is gone......I love baseball and I was getting bored as we were put through the divisional playoffs and the the championship playoffs...and then the World Series. Selig and the owners need to get real and cut some of the fluff out!
