Red Sox get Gagne from Rangers

NEW YORK – The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-hander Eric Gagne from the Texas Rangers for left-handed pitcher Kason Gabbard and minor-league outfielders David Murphy and Engel Beltre, according to multiple sources.

In the meantime, the Red Sox and Gagne continue to talk about Gagne's role and, if Gagne is going to spend most of his time in Boston as a setup man. Gagne was due about $4 million in incentives based on games finished. That would be altered, based on appearances.

Jonathan Papelbon is expected to continue as the closer, though Gagne will fill in occasionally.

• The Red Sox and Chicago White Sox are no longer talking about a deal for right-fielder Jermaine Dye.

This would be awesome...the sox pen may be one of the best bullpens ever with Gagne, Papelbon, Okajima and Delcarmen

I'd rather see Pap continue as the closer, unless they move him to a starter role which would probably not take place until next season. Hopefully this deal will fall through.

there is virtually no chance the sox give gange the ninth so if thats what it takes to get this deal done it will not happen.

I don't know who David Murphy and Kason Gabbard are but those are the trading chips the Red Sox are offering for Gagne. Can any of you rabid Sox fans tell this Ranger fan what were getting in these 2 guys (assuming this rumor is for real... which is a big assumption).
You'll be happy with Gagne though... if he agrees to set up Papelbon, the mayor of Boston can start planning the parade route....

you dont screw over a closer whos been fantastic the last 2 years to get some watered down closer playing for one of the worst teams in baseball.
screw this deal and screw the dye deal. trade off coco and bring up jacoby, and get rid of lugo in the offseason

paps been shakey as of lately, Gange would give us insurance, Pap has alway expressed his desire to become a starter. Imagine 7 innings of papelbon instead of just 1!

why on earth would they want to replace perhaps the best closer in baseball with a guy who's a misstep away from the DL. This is lunacy, or more likely, just a move so that the Yanks don't get him.

NO WAY SHOULD THE RED SOX MAKE PAPELBON A SET-UP MAN THIS SEASON!!! Make Gagne suck it up and be the set-up man this year. Then next year, re-evaluate, and then perhaps put Papelbon in the rotation to take over Schilling's spot and make Gagne the closer then.

There's no reason to mess with the Sox bullpen at this point, especially considering what Texas is probably going to ask for, for Gagne. A better option would to see if there's a way to unload Drew for Jermaine Dye, or some other more productive right fielder

No WAY they send Pap to the setup role - he wants to be a closer. This could ruin the bullpen.

eh not the best move to do I mean it keeps him away from the yanks and any other team competing for a playoff spot but dont ruin a good thing with papelbon and hell we got okey dokey

I think the Sox are making this deal primarily to prevent the Yankees from getting him. It sounds like a disruptive move to make Gagne the closer and demote Papelbon to setup man.

Gagne is a moron if he doesn't allow trade to happen..he gets more exposure in BOS, he'll get playoff money that he wouldn't get in TEXAS, he gets to actually pitch in the playoffs, and the Sox will give him more cash most likely guaranteed instead of incentives for games played...additionally, he would close SOME games for Sox since they don't like having Paps pitch too much..
    This would be awesome!!
    Come on Gagne!!

It will never work.I don't believe Papelbon would accept a demotion to a setup role, not after being top banana this far into the season.I realise there's nothing he can do about it.But it would upset Papelbon and make him less effective. Why do the Sox feel they need anyone now, especially damaged goods like Gagne?

There is NO WAY the sox will move Pap to a set-up role. That would be a slap in the face.
Gagne is going to the Yanks.....Proctor is gone, clearing the way for the Yanks to aquire Gagne. Gagne can be traded to the Yanks without permission....I believe that is the way his contract is structured.

Papelbon doesn't deserve to be dropped to a set up role and that will only provide the clubhouse with a negative impact on having a new player come in and be handed the job. Gagne should be happy playing with a playoff bound team as the set up man, or move Pap to the starting role and give gagne the 9th.
