Big League Stew - MLB

Thank you, Bobby Abreu(notes).

While the New York media salivates over the potential of a Joe Torre vs. Yankees matchup in the World Series, you're serving up a hot revenge-tinged ALCS appetizer for the soap-starved masses.

Bon appetit

OK, so you're not exactly making what people are specifically ordering, at least not with your words. Though you could be uber-bitter after the Yankees didn't offer you arbitration and you had to take an $11 million pay cut ($16 million > $5 million) to go play for the Angels, you're taking the high road as the ALCS draws near.

Let's take a look at some of your comments on the team that employed you for three years before telling you to hit the bricks:

NYT: "I didn't know what was happening, really. I didn't expect that they would let me go like that, but business is business."

Star-Ledger: "It surprised me, but, well, here I am with the Angels having some Champagne, so that's what really matters."

Globe: "It would be fun to play the Yankees, I have a lot of friends there. I've been thinking all year that I would like to play them in the playoffs.''

Never has a soldier remained so loyal after being discharged, but it speaks to a classy nature that has made you among one of the most respected and admired players out there. Instead of pouting over having your salary cut to relative slave wages, you put on an Angels uniform and instantly became one of the best free agent bargains of all time. You posted a slash line of .293/.390/.435 with 15 homers and 103 RBIs. You were an OBP monster (.692) against the Red Sox in the ALDS, walking four times in Game 1 and going 5-for-9 in the rest of your plate appearances. You've added a lot of leadership to the Angels clubhouse.

And now? Well, you're set to rendezvous with the Yankees, who were able to artfully adapt to your departure. The cheaper Nick Swisher(notes) did a decent impersonation of you at the plate (while adding a little more power) and Brian Cashman was able to put the savings from your salary toward adding the three-headed free agency behemoth of Mark Teixeira(notes), CC Sabathia(notes) and A.J. Burnett(notes). It's sad to say, but your absence was noted in The Bronx this season about as much as ... what was that guy's name? Oh yeah, Xavier Nady(notes)

Of course, you now have the perfect opportunity to remind the Yankees of what they're missing and to destroy that matchup with Torre, who aired his grievances with the Yankees in a bestselling book. You may not publicly stating your intents or motivations, but we're betting that you're privately planning on recouping some of your losses. It should be fun to watch.

Duk.. there are enough rumors already. Why you adding fuel to the fire???
Abr who?? Who the heck is he?? Oh that is right, the one on right field that was afraid of the wall. The one that made my cringe every time the ball was hit in his direction. The Angels can have him. We've got a big upgrade!

We are glad to have him. The yankees may have saved money letting him go, but they paid way too much for Texeira while the Angels just about equaled his production by installing BamBam as the everyday first baseman. You guys had to spend a ridiculous amount of jack to get to the same place the Halos are right now. I guess thats why I see all those empty padded chairs behind the dish in the new Yankee Stadium, because nobody can afford the tickets. Anaheim on the other hand is packed to capacity every night. We OWN you guys in the playoffs and regular season! Game on and I'm looking forward to keeping the HALO lit through October.

I am a yankee fan and was also a fan of Abreu but this is the yankees year! This series will go 6 or even 7 games but yankees starting pitching is better, lineups are almost even with slight edge to the yankees, and yankees bullpen is so DEEP! I will say Scioccia is a better manager but c'mon.

WTF does Abreu have to be bitter about? His two full seasons with the Yankees were the two worst years of his ENTIRE CAREER. Despite two seasons of putting up numbers that were significantly below his career average (hey, a 100-point drop in slugging percentage since steroid testing started? Nothing suspicous about that!), he was paid $15 million in '07 and $16 million last year, making him one of the 15 highest-paid players in major league baseball. We're supposed to admire the way he's not openly furious that the Yankees chose to stop ridiculously overpaying him and instead put together a lineup that includes EIGHT guys who hit better than him this year?

No matter what the issue is he had another excellent year in '09. He once again hit for a high average, had a decent amount of homers, drove in over 100 runs, and scored well over 90 while being an important reliable productive cog in the Angels lineup.

You have to remember that the Angels have owned your big name pitchers this year (I agree, the past is the past) last time CC was pitching against the Angels he stunk! Although I aqm not a fan of the Yankees but respect Derek Jeter and I always liked A-Rod (he kills the Angels pitching in Anaheim) Tex can kiss my a$$ with his greediness! For all you Yankee fans that say all these negative things about Abreu, remember, besides Jeter and maybe Damon he was the only guy with class on that club. We will take Abreu today and tomorrow and will laugh when Chone Figgins is the difference maker in this series. Angels in 6! GO ANGELS!

I like Abreu but I don't get why he would be bitter? The Yankees did nothing wrong. Abreu wanted a 3 year, 48 million dollar deal. The Yankees, and every other team in MLB clearly did not think he was worth that. He was not offered arbitration, and neither was Pettite because the award would have been too high and the players likely would have taken it. I believe Abreu even turned down a 2 year, 16 million dollar offer from the Rays. He kept holding out thinking he would get more and didn't even sign with the Angels until the last minute. And what did they offer? One year for 5 million! Why wasn't he bitter about that? He was the victim of a glut of corner outfielders on the market, a bad economy, and wanted a contract nobody was going to offer him. It was nothing personal, it was just business for both sides.

Angels starting pitching needs to dominate. If they pitch like they did against the Red Sux - Angels in 5 games.

If I recall correctly, Abreu's contract with the Angels was laden with incentives. Since he had a good year, I imagine he earned a lot more than $5 million this year. He was a good, clutch hitter for the Yanks, but Nady (RH) and Swisher (switch hitter) balanced out the Yankee line-up. Sorry to see him go from the Yanks and sorrier to have to face him in the play-offs.

Jeremy S - Just because the Yankee line-up had more HR's than Abreu doesnt mean they had a better season. Who drove in more runs besides A-Rod and Tex. Learn how to read stats before you run your mouth. HR's does not make a good player.

Bobby has little heart, Im sure he doesnt care if he makes the Yanks pay or not, he's getting paid to jog after balls.
Philly drops him, Wagner, and Lidle and wins the WS within 2 years.

Boby Abreu has no reason to said something against his former team. The Yankees let Abreu go because his fielding was mediocre. He was afraid of the fence and we loss a few games because that. At the plate he was no that good taking two strikes on the middle of the plate many times. Now he is playing whit the other team the way he was supposed to play for the Yankees. I tell you, I,m 78 years old, Yankee fan since a was 7 years old and the most happy day of my life was when they let Abreu go and when Joe Torre (The Mommy) left the team. To the people talking about de World series and champimship Torre won whit the Yankees, anyone, do yo hear, anyone, whit the players George give to him can win. Yo don't need to be a genius to win whit those teams. That is happening again whit Los Angeles, he has good players all over but he still the same, no smart plays, no bunting, no hit and run, no squeeze play, sitting on the bench waiting for miracles.
