Big League Stew - MLB

After a week packed with GM-reporter showdowns and more steroid silliness, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the final hours of the MLB trading season.

We'll be following the fun with this specially-designed live blog that's packed with the insight and reporting of Yahoo! Sports own Tim Brown, Gordon Edes and Jeff Passan, the Twitter feeds of some of the best baseball reporters and bloggers around and pithy comments and observations from myself and the loyal army of swap-hungry Stewies.

The festivities start at noon (ET) sharp and run until we're sure the cell phones are no longer ringing. Remember to bring the witty and funny if you want your comment to make the cut.

One more note: I'll be ducking in and out to finish trade posts as they happen, so don't lose your head if I go missing and put the comments on hold for a few minutes.

Will you also talk about how George Mitchell is on the Red Sox's board and how its quite clear now that he is not impartial and he refused to investigate his "team".

Jay M, I thought that was more than evident after it came out. The Mitchell Report was basically a legalese verison of Juiced.

You should discuss how the mariners are insane for trying to trade a pitcher who has had a plus 4 era the last three years (except this year) for a guy projected to be mike piazza/albert pujols type player.

It pretty much was Phil, well at least to all of us who don't work for ESPN. But I think this just reconfirms it.

@MattM: don't try to conflate Piazza with Pujols. Not even in the same category of player.

It always fun to see how many other Pittsburgh Pirates get traded. It's like they GM makes trades just for the sake of making trades. You can make one hell of a team out of all the guys they've traded since 2003.
I gotta thank them though for trading Aramis Ramirez to my beloved Cubs back in 2003 for Bobby "I'm not Hank's son" Hill.

And Mickey D, that's what Montero is projected as. At worst, Piazza, at best, Pujols.

well, i'm sure epstein has to do something. not only to improve the team, but to keep the topic of steroids from occupying the airwaves of red sox nation. gonzales, martinez, halladay, or 2 of 3 or 3 of 3?

Cannot beleive the Dodgers are just sitting there while teams get players. IF THEY THINK A SETUP MAN IS THERE PROBLEM then they have need fire all office personnel. You have one the best hitters in baseball. Washburn would have been a plus .................they will always be the LA DEADGERS ...........THEY SUCK IN THE OFFICE

IMO, the Washburn trade favors the Mariners more than the Tigers. For most of his career Washburn has been an average, sometimes above average pitcher. And he pitches to contact, eventually contact pitchers will run into a string of games where all the batter balls seem to find holes.
I'm just not that big on Washburn, I don't think he'll help the Tigers all that much. I might sound like a complete dumb@$$ for saying that in 2 months, but I strongly think he's due for a bad stretch of games very soon.
As for the Dodgers, they can still be in talks for a player like Zach Duke. Theres still plenty of time before the deadline.
and mark my words, ROY HALLADAY IS NOT GETTING TRADED!!!

"its quite clear now that he is not impartial"
he was working with three ongoing investigations: the mets trainer, the case in jupiter florida and the balco case. it was not meant as an extensive list of every player taking steroids. they did bust two red sox players on the 2007 team (gagne and donnely), and a number of former red sox players were on the list, though they're PED usage came after their red sox tenure.
so no, he wasnt biased. he was working with investigations that were ongoing.
"wtf red sox should give the cubs the world series trophy "
that is a ridiculous notion. first: cubs didnt even make it to the world series either year the red sox won it. two, the championships are tainted, as many have claimed. why? one: no has proven that papi and manny did steroids in 2004 or 2007. (i personally believe it is possible. but not proven). additionally, it's not like the red sox were the only team using ped's. every team was. so are you claiming every title since say, 1993, is tainted?

As a long time Giants fan, it kills me to have seen the way the fans in Boston treated Bonds during his last trip to Fennway. I went with a buddy and had a great time, it's a great town and awsome ballpark, but to have first hand knowledge of all the signs and all the b/s they were talking.....and to know now that their 2 bigboys were doing the same things........O.K. here it is, I don't know Barry Bonds...I am not trying to say he was a good person or anything, but the way he went about his buisness and never ratted on any other ball players in the face of nonstop ridicule and public abuse was pretty impressive to me.

Here is the trade that MUST be done: Red Sox trade Ortiz and The Undertaker to the Cavaliers for Shaq and Brock Lesnar. I'd sign off on that in a minute.
