Big League Stew - MLB

Usually when we post baseball fight videos here on the Stew, it's to have a voyeuristic look at men being boys with tempers flaring in the heat of battle but with no real damage being done. However, Thursday night's 10-minute fight between the Dayton Dragons and Peoria Chiefs, which saw 15 players and both managers ejected, crashes through that boundary of an ultimately harmless brouhaha and enters full-fledged nightmare brawl territory with an absolutely haunting image.

If you haven't seen it already, check out the video from the Dayton Daily News (there's no sound, so don't readjust your sets at home) and try not to flinch when Peoria pitcher Julio Castillo fires a baseball toward the dugout, hitting a fan in the stands instead and hospitalizing him with one of the worst acts we've ever seen on a baseball field. Castillo, a 20-year-old from the Dominican Republic, is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of felonious assault today.

More on how the fight started, from the AP:

"After a Peoria player was hit in the top of the first, Castillo hit two batters in the bottom half — one in the head. The second hit batsmen by Castillo, Angel Cabrera, made an aggressive slide into second to break up a double play. Castillo followed that by throwing his next pitch up-and-in to the next Dayton batter, prompting Dayton manager Donnie Scott to complain to the home plate umpire. Interim Peoria manager Carmelo Martinez — filling in for Ryne Sandberg — came onto the field to join the discussion. The two managers began arguing, and when Martinez pushed Scott, the benches emptied.

We'll obviously be hearing more about this story and perhaps even see more fan videos like this one. At the best, we'll hear that Castillo is banned from baseball for a long, long time — maybe even forever. Stay tuned and keep the fan who was hit in your thoughts today.

    Unforgiveable.
We go to baseball games to enjoy the competition, not to be wrapped up in it. No player should throw anything in the direction of the stands with the purpose of retaliation towards a dugout. Broken bats and errant throws are one thing; getting hurt because of some idiot player is reason enough for said player to be expelled for life.

Both teams ought to be ordered to forfit the rest of the season. There is no room in any part of baseball for these actions and should be penalized accordingly.

This assclown pitcher should be deported. Not just because he hit a fan, but because he threw the ball at all. Think about this, he's a professional pitcher, probably throwing the ball around 90 mph off the mound. Look at where he is in this video. He gets tackled right near the warning track, so he was maybe 25 feet from the dugout when he threw the ball. He didn't just throw it though, he took a friggin crow hop like he was throwing from right field. So he's throwing this ball probably over 100mph at people 25 feet away. He could have killed somebody. I've been around the game my whole life, and that's the trashiest thing I've ever seen.

    Who throws a baseball, honestly?!
What would happen if ball-thrower Castillo met bat-tosser Delmon Young in a duel?
In Castillo's defense, he obviously has no control - he couldn't even throw the ball into the dugout.

    Terrible display.
I wish Sandberg had been there just to see how this would have played out, hopefully not this bad.
Cowardly move by that pitcher, just awful.

It's about time someone gets charged for on field actions. Not enough was done with the likes of Fransisco when he tossed a chair in to the stands, or with Bertruzzi in hockey.

The crowd was certainly in it though, I do feel bad for the fan who got plunked that is very unfortunate but in the youtube video you can hear the fans cheering it on like it was Game 7 of the Worlds. Now do would you consider this an act of mob mentality? Heat of the moment type BS? I hope the pitcher gets the book thrown at him. Literally.

Watching, reading this makes me think of Ray Chapman, the only major league player killed on the field due to a beanball. There's a chance the fan might die.

Very unfortunate for the fan. Pitcher deserves every charge to his name. Would've been awesome if that whole section of fans stood up and gradually made their way onto the field to barricade Castillo from going anywhere. Dayton sells out that place every game and gives a good family atmosphere to enjoy. Not so on this night, but it won't keep anyone from going to the next game.

And for that pitcher, i see a nice career at mcdonalds in his future pitching fries after a nice stint in jail
this is your butthole: o this is your butthole in prison: O any questions?

As a pitcher, his best chance of surviving a massive brawl like that was to throw the ball at people. He isn't going to be able to stand up to some of those big guys in a fair fight. Kind of like Richie Sexson. He has no chance of hitting anything with his bat so when he gets in a fight he goes and throws his batting helmet. You work with what you got I suppose.

The one thing that hasn't been said is the umpires not tossing him after the second hit Ive played baseball and you don't hit some one in the head with a fastball unless you mean it he should have been tossed after that and then after the second batter was hit it should have never come to this

this is why baseball is retarded. we sit here and complain about how we people have short tempers and parents can't understand why so many kids end up fighting. they go out there and emulate their favorite players. i'm really sick and tired of fans, players, coaches, and mlb executive condoning this type of behavior simply by lack of action. it's time to put these players in check, this game is very emotional yes, but letting grown men go out there and fight for this long, it leads to things like this. if this problem isn't handled soon we will see more fans and players alike being injured and much more seriously

This is what's wrong with the country today. You can't sue for everything you moron. The team is in now way responsible for this, you can not sue the team. Sole responsibility lies with the guy that threw it. And the tickets actually have a disclaimer on them. By buying the ticket you accept the risk of being hit with a ball or bat. There is no way the team or league or anybody other than the pitcher should be held responsible. People that try to sue corporations when an employee does something wrong make me puke.

what this blog doesn't mention is that the pitcher castillo was responding to their second basemen having his leg broken by that 'hard slide' into second. the guy's leg snapped like a twig, so i'm not all that surprised their pitcher was fired up after.

What a coward! this guy is lucky he didn't kill someone. what was his intent? he could have killed someone in the dugout and instead, almost killed an innocent fan!!! there is right and wrong and this is just plain wrong. emotions aside, this guy should be banned from baseball in the us and deported back to the dr.

i wasn't saying what he did was right, i just find it odd that this article omitted the fact that the hard slide broke the second basemen's leg, and that the pitcher was retaliating for that.
