In one of the best clubhouse stunts I've seen, the awesome Aussie shaved only the top of his head this week. He then pronounced it the team's official "Rally Head" and said he hopes it will have an effect on the National League wild card race. The Braves trail the Rockies by four games and the Giants by three.
Going with some extra air-conditioning atop the dome isn't exactly a new thing for Moylan. He shaved the top of his head last season to poke some fun at Smoltz, who was then a teammate. After getting a number of laughs for about an hour, Moylan shaved the rest of his head.
Cut to Monday, when Adam LaRoche(notes) saw an old cell phone picture of the 'do and dared Moylan to recreate the Rally Head. Moylan was only too happy to comply and says he'll keep the hairstyle until at least Sept. 20, which ensures that Smoltz will get to see it himself in St. Louis.
"I would do anything appearance-wise to get into the playoffs," he told MLB.com.
But don't get Moylan confused for someone who's all style and no substance. He's 6-2 with a 3.05 ERA this season and set a Major League record on Wednesday for most appearances (75) to begin a season without allowing a home run. His overall homerless streak is at 81 games and goes all the way back to Opening Night 2008, when he gave up that walkoff to Ryan Zimmerman in the inaugural game at Nationals Park.
