Big League Stew - MLB

As the most expensive fourth place team around, the Mets might be again producing another worst team that money could buy.

But let me say this for Flushing's colossal disappointments: At least they've got one heck of a team announcing the crash

The New York Observer seems to agree with the writing of this solid profile on the three-man SNY booth of Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez.

"The Anti-Homers" reads the article's title, and, according to writer John Koblin, the booth has achieved a rare chemistry by mixing the "competent" Cohen, the "incisive" Darling and the "subversive" Hernandez.

I'd concur, because whether Cohen is calling the action better than anyone not named Vin Scully or Hernandez is grilling the Mets' mishaps on the field, they're always worth a  stopover when watching Extra Innings on any given night. No matter what the situation. No matter the standings.

And, really, that's the best compliment a baseball booth can be paid, right? That someone with no emotional investment (ie: me) can tune into the game specifically to hear what that team's announcers are up to? That they feel something approaching appreciation?

I have a few other favorites from non-Chicago teams  — the NESN crew in Boston is fun, I want Bert Blyleven to circle me and the D'Backs are a guilty pleasure with Mark Grace — but no one comes close to the crew that regularly shows what homerish amateurs the guys across town can be. For my money, if I'm going to tune into any booth on any night – again, Scully remains the obvious gold standard — it's going to be the Mets' trio.

Excluding your own team and the Dodgers, who's your favorite announcing crew?

I'm a Phillies fan but agree 100%. I don't live near Philly any more, so I get the Extra Innings package. I find myself watching alot of Mets games and even tho I hate them and revel in their misery, Cohen, Darling & Hernandez really do call a great game.

Also, I'd be remissed not to mention the late Harry Kalas, but given the circumstances his replacement Tom McCarthy and the Sarge Gary Matthews Sr are great to listen to as well.

Tom Hamilton and Mike Hegan for the Tribe? Those guys tell it the way it is (they are really ripping the team this year) and they tell hilarious stories and make strange pop culture references. And if you want to hear stories about how the Oakland A's used to break out in fistfights and hate eachother on their way to winning a world series in '72, Mike Hegan will gladly share.

I pretty much agree with you, but I do find the guys in the Rangers booth to be entertaining at times as well.

I'm a huge Mets fan, and I'm not gonna lie they do make watching the Mets this season better. Gary Cohen is a fantastic play-by-play announcer. He calls a great game and he used to be on the radio to. The great thing about Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling is the fact that they reminisce about the '86 season a lot and both were above average players in their time. Hernandez gives a great hitter's point of view, and Darling a pitcher's. Kevin Burkhardt provides a great sideline report more than once a game. Also, you cant forget Bill Webb who is the director of the broadcast and Ralph Kiner who stops by in the booth every now and than. The angles are also superb and unprecedented for a local broadcast. I choose the SNY telecast over the ESPN telecast any time I have a choice.

I live in Cincinnati and Marty and Thom Brenneman are okay, but I really, really miss Bob Uecker from when I lived in Milwaukee. That dude can call a game.

Bill Brown and Jim Deshaies bring a great game for the FSN Houston for the Astros. They've been working together for several years and have great chemistry during games
And, Heidi Watney on NESN is the hottest thing this side of Erin Andrews. Just sayin'.

That NESN description was spot on. They're fun. You're usually going to laugh at least once every broadcast. Not to say they don't know what they're talking about either. Eck is THE guy in the bar spitting knowledge the way he confidently explains things he sees. Orsillo is class and relaxed as well. Heidi is some fun eye candy as well. Great team in Boston.

When watching Yanks-Mets, I tuned into SNY, since I can't stand that assclown Michael Kay...coming from a Yankee fan, the YES broadcasts suck in comparison...

Cohen is a ridiculous homer. Find the SNY video of Rodrigo Lopez battling Tim Redding on the first Friday of July. Cohen and co. kept ridiculing Lopez as an intrinsically flawed pitcher with mediocre stuff, while Redding was portrayed as a stud who was simply having a bad night. I've never seen greater bias in my life. Cohen continues to believe that this current Mets squad is not devoid of talent. To him, they're just wondrous players who happen to be under-performing. A Mets' failure to him cannot be explained in terms of essential flaws, only aberration.

I am also a Phillies fan and have to agree the the MEts Broadcasting line is excellent. I have also had to painfully listen to the Padres homer broadcasting team and again realized who blessed we wer with Harry K, LA and the rest of the Phillies team.
There is one other thing the Mets have going for them. They won't have suffer another painful collapse this September.

When the Rangers had Mark "Hello Win Column" Holtz and Tom Greive in the booth they were great together. But since Mark's death they have not had a good partner for Greive. There current buddy Josh Lewin is repulsive. i hate that guy...

There is no greater home run call than Tom Hamilton for the indians. It's not baseball season until you hear him call a game even though the Indians are terrible, which is a huge understatement.

It's time for the Yankees to either fire Michael Kay and John Sterling or move them to the post-game show. They make me cringe.
Both Kay and Sterling speak very condescendingly to their audiences. I wish the Yanks had Ken Singleton, Paul O'Neill, and John Flaherty rotate every series on TV.
Jerry Howarth, the Blue Jays' play-by-play man, is very good. Before going to the Phillies, Tom McCarthy called some Mets games quite well on the radio. Singleton, O'Neill, Flaherty, Howarth, and McCarthy should be offered the national jobs.

The biggest "homer" is Rich Waltz in the Florida Marlins TV booth. He has a very sarcastic way he talks about the other teams' fans and players. You would think, that the the Marlins are in 1st Place by 15 games the way he praises the Marlins team each and every game. He is a bush leage play by play commentator. He would never be popular with the baseball savy fans in the cities like NY, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia or Detroit. If you get a chance listen to him on your cable or satellite baseball package, you will immediately hear his "bush league'' statements by the end of the 1st inning.

As a big Mets fan, I truly appreciate the Mets/SNY broadcast crew. They are never afraid to tell it like it is and give great insight; Darling with pitch selection and mechanics, Hernandez with the ins and outs of defense (particularly 1B) and hitting (both situational and mechanics), and Kevin Burkhardt with clubhouse and off the field stuff. Cohen calls the game as if he is still on the radio, which is to say, he paints a picture that only complements the great camera work direction of Bill Webb. Plus, we occasionally get visits by the great Ralph Kiner which are always a pleasure. I don't watch many out of market games, but I can't see how it could get any better than this.

Mentioning Vin Scully as still being on top of his game is a joke. Vin was very good once but is years past his prime. If you have trouble sleeping, listen to Scully and you'll be put sound asleep if you don't pay attantion to him getting the other teams players names wrong over and over.
