Big League Stew - MLB

Derek Jeter sure keeps busy; shortstop, cologne pitchman, captain of the Yankee clipper, reported arm candy for six ladies on Maxim's Hot 100.

That's why pinning him down for "Answer Man" was a pleasant surprise. Jeter, famous not only for his play on the field but also on the New York club scene, remains a ruler of Gotham, even in his 14th major league season ...

Q: What's the best heckle you've ever heard from a Red Sox fan?

Derek Jeter: Man, they come up with some stuff. I don't know if I want to tell you — then I'd hear it all the time. They come up with some crazy things to say.

Q: What about one that doesn't work?

DJ: The "You suck!" gets old. You hear that over and over.

Q: How are sales going for Driven (your signature cologne) going?

DJ: Good. It's No. 1 (Ed. note: This could not be verified).

Q: So it's better than "Sex Panther"?

DJ: What's that?

Q: The perfume in "Anchorman" that's illegal in nine countries made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good.

DJ: Oh. I haven't seen that one [laughs].

Q: Does the name "Driven" refer to your work-ethic, or the fact that you're always asking people for rides?

DJ: Ha! I guess I have a reputation for both.

Q: When you dived into the stands for that ball against the Red Sox in '04, were you surprised that no one grabbed your butt?

DJ: I kind of wasn't even thinking about that [laughs]. What did catch my attention was, there's 56,000 people there and I dive into the one seat that there wasn't a person sitting in there. I was hoping I'd land on someone — but that didn't work out.

Q: The flip against the A's in the '01 playoffs; What were you even doing over there in the first place?

DJ: I'm actually supposed to be there — to be the cutoff man and redirect the throw to third base. In that situation, we still had time to get him [at home], so I just tried to get it there quick.

Q: But are you one of these people who couldn't thread a needle in real life, if you had to sew something?

DJ: I could do it. I can thread a needle.

Q: I seem to recall in another lifetime that you might have been friends with Lance Bass, but I can't find proof. Were you buds?

DJ: I know him. I wouldn't say we're "buddies." You meet a lot of people in New York. So, yeah, I've met him before.

Q: Whose wax dummy would take longer to melt: Yours or David Wright's?

DJ: Oh, man. Longer? I'm probably a little taller, so it might take longer for mine to melt [laughs].

Q: Are you more of an expert on bugs coming off the Cleveland experience of last season?

DJ: I think they confuse me more. I think that experience confused me more with the bugs.

Q: Mr. Trump. What kind of landlord is he?

DJ: He's great; I've gotten to know him throughout the years and he's been great to me.

Q: You ever look around the clubhouse and go, "Shoot, where's Ruben Sierra?"

DJ: Ha! It's funny. We just saw Ruben in spring training not too long ago; he stopped by [laughs]. Ruben was a good teammate.

Q: When Earth makes official first contact with aliens, will Mr. Steinbrenner go back to his home planet?

DJ: The Boss is the best. The best. So, wherever planet he's from, more people should be from there.

Q: Do you guys have enough ex-Cubs in the bullpen?

DJ: Do we? How many we got [looking over shoulder]? Hawkins, Farnsworth. They're helping us out, so I'm glad.

Q: The honor is well-known, but what perks come with being Yankees captain? Is there a gold card?

DJ: What perks? Oh, man. There's a lot of perks. More than you could know [laughs].

Q: Shouldn't Michigan just give you a degree already?

DJ: I think so. They probably should. I'm still a freshman. I went to school there in the off-season of my first year as a pro. I think they should. I'd like to get a degree. You ever see the movie "Back to School"? I'll go back with my kids.

Maybe because he's a "bigger name", but this has been about the worst of the Answer Men interviews.
And where is Erin Andrew's link?

Mickey D I was thinking the same thing. You would think Jeter could have added some more to the answer's. The AVS one is still my fave.

another over-paid multimillionaire who gets wayyy too much attention for doing absolutely nothing but hitting and catching a ball. As far as work-ethic, Im sure many of us could show him the true meaning of HARD WORK!!!! Let me hear more about what he has given back to the under-priveleged members of our society (like Andre Agassi), and I'll show you someone worthy of attention and accolade. .

He's not a terrible interview, he's a smart interview. Have you ever seen his comments taken out of context or used against him or the team?

0-4 last night, perhaps he should be concentrating more on his hitting then donald trump and his cologne.

Hey Perdoc. here's a newsflash: You don't have to be rich and famous to give back to society. So the questions is, what are you doing to give back to society, and the answer is: Nothing. You expect athletes and celeb to do it, but you won't get your hands dirty, will ya. Hypocrit.

Periodic 10 WHy don't you check out his Turn 2 Foundation and all he has done and then come back amd talk about him not giving back. All you showed was how little class you have to try to put down a human being who has worked hard to get where he is at, gives back, that you don't see in the news for being arrested, and is a humble, respectful man. And if you knew anything about Agassi you would know that he would not appreciate you using his name to put donw another talented human being. What Agassi has done with building the school in Las Vegas is truly remarkable but that doesn't mean that others haven't given back also.

I am a huge Red Sox fan have been for almost 50 years now. Jeter is the ONLY Yankee that I would want to have on our team. 100% Class from Day 1. When he retires I will be the 1st guy to give him a standing O at Fenway. Until that time I have to Boo but it is out of respect. He is one of the all time best.

He's great with the press. Keeps out of trouble. 200 hits a year, every year, captain clutch in the playoffs. Charity starter. He's what every athlete should be, anything to the contrary is just plain yankee hating nonsense. Usually from people in irrelevant towns with irrelevant ball clubs to root for.

    Hey Perdoc10-
DJ does a LOT for underprivileged youth. Look into his Turn Two foundation - a charity he started in his first year in the MLB. He's not only a hell of a benefactor, he's also very involeved in the day-to-day running of the org.
I understand that people hate NYC and the Yanks. In the case of the Yanks, in some instances, I even understand WHY people hate them, but Jeter's never been anything but a classy and hard player. He's all hustle with the tenacity of a young Pete Rose, but without any of Rose's showboating/ego issues on the field (or gambling problems off).

I hate the yankees and I don't think Jeter is a "star". He is solid at the plate and on the field, and I respect him as a player and a person. I also think his charity organization is great, however, he may be a little bit over-rated. Nonetheless, a steady, well-rounded baseball player.
