Big League Stew - MLB

As our own Jeff Passan is wont to say, here are two more reasons why all new fathers should tie their sons' right hands behind their backs at birth.

According to Philly's WIP (via The 700 Level), the Phillies are bringing 46-year-old Jamie Moyer back into the fold for two more years.

Yes, this from the same team that wanted its fans to believe that 32-year-old Pat Burrell was starting to resemble The Cryptkeeper before going out to replace him with an even crustier 37-year-old Raul Ibanez.

Meanwhile, Andy Pettitte is the subject of this offseason's looniest whisper. According to SI's Jon Heyman (via MLBTR), the 36-year-old southpaw has (had?) an offer in hand from a team willing to give him a three-year, $36 million deal. I'm going to join Brian Cashman out on that sturdy limb and say that the boast is crafted from highest-grade Texas cow manure.

After all, if it were true, Pettitte's people would have set land-speed records trying to sign and make things official before said club knew what it was doing.

But on the off-chance it's true? Well, then, go crazy, folks! The recession has ended!

Jamie Moyer will keep pitching six competent innings with a clunker every 4th/5th start until kingdom come.

I don't think I trust Moyer for two more years. Even though he had a winning record this year, he did have some god awful starts.
@eonr d, What on earth is wrong with you?

Moyer will still get 10-12 wins each year and keep the ERA around 4.25. So what if Moyer makes it to 300 wins? HOF? just because he made it to the magic number?

is 3/36 that ridiculous for Pettitte? he's left handed and according to most that know what they're talking about he pitched while injured most of the end of '08. i don't think it's that crazy of an offer. i'm sure he could get that if he ever admitted he'd entertain offers from other teams...

The Moyer signing doesn't surprise me since his career has been one long roller coaster.. He still has what it takes to be effective and he's found the right niche and that should keep him going rather effectively for maybe more than the 2 years. I would not be surprised to see over 15 wins again and maybe more each of the next 2 years. He's closing in on 250 career wins and will continue well past that. Andy Pettitt on the other hand is 10 years younger and had a year not up to par with the former. He's pitched well in the past while pitching in each league and despite his awful 2nd half, he may be able to get his head and arm back on track for a few more years. He looks very similar to how he did in the mid 90's so he's taken good care of himself. Burrell will be signed by somebody. He's just too good to be ignored and he's only 32. He has close to 5 years left.
