1. Who'd have ever thought that a press conference held by a sub-.500 team to announce the firing of a faceless minor league head would be able to overshadow the headline-grabbing monster that is trade deadline week?

And yet that's exactly what happened with Omar Minaya's disaster on the dais Monday afternoon. His attack on NYDN reporter Adam Rubin was almost universally called a farce by anyone with the ability to reason and see that the presser was just a laughable attempt to whack Rubin in the kneecaps for writing stories that led to the firing of Tony Bernazard.

Minaya eventually entered the Citi Field pressbox with the intention of apologizing to Rubin on Monday night, but the reporter had left, apparently to pen his own defense in the pages of his paper this morning. Not that he needed to, though, because almost every New York paper was already out for blood on Rubin's behalf. [NYDN

2. Extra points to Rubin's headline crew for the Smokey reference above. There were actually a lot of amusing words written off Monday's drama — at least for non-Mets fans — but the hands-down best were penned by Wallace Matthews, the always angry Newsday columnist. Here's his lead:

"The Mets are the only organization in professional sports that can call a news conference to announce it has killed the Wicked Witch — and wind up running over Toto instead.

"They are the only organization that, given a golden opportunity to rid itself of a clubhouse cancer, ends up blowing its own head off with a shotgun."

The rest is an enjoyable torch job of epic proportions. Don't miss it. [Newsday]

3. I never dip into Bill Simmons' "Peyton Manning face" bag of tricks, mostly because I think the bit is a tad exaggerated when it comes to some of the targets. However, there's no arguing that the "Adam Rubin face" — caught by SNY cameras just as Minaya launched into his takedown — belongs in Simmons' "Face" Hall of Fame. Hey Adam, wanna getaway? [Deadspin]

4. Last Tuesday, I wrote a post arguing that Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi doesn't have as much leverage as he thinks he does. Bill Baer of Crashburn Alley takes that thought one step further, using known postulates to eliminate every major league team except the Phillies from the Roy Halladay(notes) derby.  [Baseball Daily Digest]

5. Jonah Keri introduces a thought that honestly never crossed my mind: What if visiting Yankees fans spend so much money at the Trop this week that the Rays can afford to trade for a player like Cleveland's Cliff Lee(notes)? If that's the case, shouldn't transplanted New Yorkers stay at home in Florida instead of funding the enemy's effort? [RotoSynthesis]

6. Taiwanese baseball is apparently awesome and if you need any further proof, watch this video from its all-star game. That's ex-Giant Jose Castillo(notes) facing ex-Dodger Chin-Hui Tsao(notes), but not before each plays to the crowd. If only our Midsummer Classics were this fun. [Diamond Leung]

7. The Giants upgraded their situation at first base by trading for Ryan Garko(notes), but Dave Cameron thinks the Cleveland Indian might have come at too high a price (lefty prospect Scott Barnes). But such is the cost of a desperate thirst for offense. [FanGraphs]

8. Bugs & Cranks' Landon Evanson wrangled an interview with Chelcie Ross (a.k.a. "Eddie Harris" in Major League) and it's worth the read, even if Landon didn't take the time to ask Ross why he was such a jerk to Rudy and Coach Norman Dale. [Bugs & Cranks]

9. How the beating death of a Phillies fan affects all Phillies fans. [Phillies Nation]

10. Am I the only one who thought of John Lennon while watching Barry Bonds(notes) last night?

Yes? I thought so. Ah well, instant karma is gonna get ya, Barry. [Big League Stew]

11. Write this one down and remember it, Cards fans. Bill DeWitt Jr. says the team is going to make every effort to re-sign Matt Holliday(notes) when he's a free agent at the end of the season.

"We didn't do it with the idea that it would be a two-month run and it would be over," DeWitt said. "That was not the objective here. The objective was that it would be this year, a big help, and in the future a big help as well."

[Belleville News-Democrat]

12.  "Every winning club eventually loses, and there are nearly always plenty of reasons for it. But in Oakland's case, the glee over the A's tumble has not been directed at the players or their coaches, or even at the team's ownership. Instead, the fingers seem to point to one person in particular: Beane, who in his 12th season as general manager is the face of the remarkable, massive and oftentimes unpopular cultural upheaval of the Moneyball revolution." If I had the money, I'd personally send Andrew Friedman a $5,000,000 check and INSIST that he acquire Cliff Lee just so I can enjoy watching Jeter, Teixeira, and A-Rod continue to beat the living heck out of Lee, this time in a Rays uni.

Just curious......Is the "integrity" of journalists just assumed? I'm to believe that because there is no grandiose capitalism involved in selling newspapers (esp the Post and the News), that journalist have the integrity of say a Supreme Court Justice?
I mean, Omar is a dope, but I would think that a conflict of interests, even in just speculative appearance, is a warrented reason to take Adam Rubin's articles with "a grain of salt."
Its a sad state for the Mets...but the truth of the matter is that the only people who think that "journalists" are full of integrity are other journalists......MOST OF AMERICA DOESN'T TRUST THE MEDIA....
sorry to break that to you.

An assumed trust is essential between any reader and journalist and in the age of Jayson Blair and Stephen Glass, every consumer should use their media with a skeptical eye, just as journalists do with the public institutions and teams they cover.
In this case, I think it's hard to believe that Rubin — with no player development experience whatsoever — would have thought he'd be in line for Bernazard's job if only he could write a series of stories that would get him fired. Minaya was free to raise that suspicion with Rubin and his editors if he so chose, but it should have been done in a private place. Dropping a bomb like that was a bush league by Minaya, which is why I think you see a large number of people sympathizing with Rubin.

Duk, thanks for the heads-up about the Phillies fan who was beaten to death over spilt beer. We certainly live in a screwed up world when crap like that happens. Hope they send those murderers to some super-maximum security prison where they can live the rest of their lives in solitary confinement, where their feeble minds can break down a little more with each passing day until finally their mental pain is a million times greater than the physical pain that guy must have felt.

I guess us Mets fans shouldn't expect to see Jose Castillo in uniform now that Bernazard is gone; we might actually pursue players who are MLB ballplayers now.

Adam Rubin didn't get a job with the Mets and then attacked one their management team. Maybe Minaya was just saying what was really on his mind. Why do we always assume that freedom of the press is permission for reporters to attack people? What does Bernazard cursing at a scout have to to with Rubin's job as a sports reporter? The sport part of baseball is on the field.

There's an old saying; "it's far better to remain silent and be thought the fool, than to speak and remove all doubt"
Well, Omar should've remained silent. I have never heard a GM sound as dimwitted as Omar did at that press conference. And speaking of dimwits; Jeff Wilpon should kiss his old man's behind every day for being born first. Yet another guy who is simply clueless.

Why should Rubin be believed over Minaya? Because he wrote the truth, as proven by Bernazard's firing and all the witnesses who confirmed the stories. Bernazard should have been fired anyway for being a total failure at his job. He was director of player development. Anyone bother to look at the Mets farm system? Minaya may be a nice guy and he is likeable but he has made disastrous moves for the Mets. What idiot would give Luis Castillo a 4 year contract for $24 m? Or Oliver Perez a 3 year deal for $36 m? Or sign a 47 year Julio Franco for 2 years? Or an ancient Orlando Hernandez for 2 years at $5 m per year (and he pitched, what, 12 games)? He traded youth and talent for old washed up players and the terrible farm system shows it. Minaya should go next.

For the first times in years, I may watch a Mets game tonight. More entertaining than a circus, and a lot like a trainwreck that you just can't help but watch. Too bad the victims are the Mets fans who pay good money to watch minor league level baseball.

But if Omar felt like Rubin was making embellishments about Bernazard (as has been noted), I think he was right to explain the possible causation of that. Clearly, something was amiss with Bernazard; otherwise he'd still have his job. Omar seemed to be clarifying that the story was part accurate and partially driven forward by Rubin's ambition.
I don't think Rubin was gunning for Bernazard's job per se, but Bernazard very well could have been the stumbling block between Rubin and an entry-level post in the front office. Aside from pure vindictiveness, I just don't see any impetus for Omar to lie here. Rubin may need to lie to keep his job. As for the people sympathizing with Rubin, I think you're seeing it because Rubin's ilk disseminate the information to the masses. General managers of baseball teams aren't the faction out there spreading news; it's reporters like Rubin. Wolves guarding the henhouse...

I don't get Minaya's tactics at all. If he felt Rubin was making up the allegations, why fire Bernazard? Why not stand your ground, say the reports are bogus, and that Bernazard is keeping his job? THEN the attack on Rubin would have made sense. Instead, they announced they were conducting an internal investigation, then they fired Bernazard, then they blamed it all on the media? I'm a huge Mets fan, but Omar acted like a coward. Minaya is a bad General Manager, and a dreadful PR person. Just look at Omar's trades and signings. They speak for themselves.

Yes Brian, his signings have been terrible. But his trades have not. Evidence: Kris Benson for John Maine and Jorge Julio (whom he flipped for Orlando Hernandez). The resigning of Hernandez, eh not so much but he was useful in 06 and some of 07. The trade for Santana was nothing short of a steal at this point. Mulvey and Humber look to be journeymen at best, I thought that b4 they were traded. The Xavier Nady trade is a push imo. The trade sending Heath Bell to the Padres was viewed at the time as positive, granted hindsight is always 20-20. Delgado for Jacobs, Petit and Psomas. Look at what Delgado has done in comparison. Use some evidence my man, some of us do.
