The Yankees’ recent results may be the same, but the mood couldn’t be more different

Yankees fans have essentially been watching a .500 ball club since the start of 2013. Since that time, there have been ups and downs, but mostly downs—the team has scored 2,691 runs since the beginning of that year, and they have allowed 2,699. Across baseball in that time, they are: 19th in wRC+, 20th in position player fWAR, 19th in defensive runs saved, 4th in FIP-, and 13th in ERA-. The only players with more than 10 WAR: Masahiro Tanaka and Brett Gardner. This is the mark of a mediocre team. Bad offense, poor defense, and above-average yet inconsistent starting pitching creates an environment where one week they’re surging towards the playoffs, and another where they’re spiraling to oblivion.
