Scouting Report on Avery Walls

by Barry Every - 06/02/2010
  • SpeedDivision I Player
  • SizeDivision I Player
  • StrengthBlue Chip
  • AgilityBlue Chip
  • Ball SkillsBlue Chip
On the Hoof: Size-wise, he is between a safety and corner with average build. Walls is fairly lean and has long arms. He will physically remind fans of Washington signee Sean Parker, but Walls is more muscular.
Needs Improvement: Sometimes is so aggressive to crush the run he leaves himself prone to play-action passes. He will need to add some size and muscle mass in order to have the same impact striking ball carriers at the collegiate level. If he ends up at corner, he will need to work on his man coverage.
Most Impressive: Pound-for-pound, this is one of the hardest hitters in the country. He reads run/pass quicker than almost any defensive back I saw play last year. Walls has the balls skills and the football smarts to help the defense line up properly.
Conclusion: He will definitely excel on special teams while possibly becoming a team leader on and off the field. Though a bit undersized for his position, Walls is a classic overachiever. Don't be surprised if he becomes a three-year starter.
