If everything goes according to the Kentucky coaching staff's plans, Patrick Towles won't play this year.
Mark Stoops announced Tuesday that Towles is No. 3 on the depth chart, and -- barring any surprises with the two players in front of him -- the staff wants to redshirt him. He said Towles was open to the idea of redshirting this season.
"Patrick has been absolutely fantastic during the process," Stoops said. "He fought. He wanted to win the starting job, but he's had a great attitude, and that's what I told him. Patrick has been very good, has continued to work extremely hard. He's got as much talent as any quarterback we have on campus, but it's just a matter of letting him grow into the situation a little bit ... Patrick was very good, very mature, handled it very well. It wasn't an easy conversation, because I know how much he cares and how much he put into it. He handled it the right way."
But will Towles want to stick around to grow into the situation?
As of right now, here's how the situation will look one year from now, if he stays at UK.
-- Towles will be a redshirt sophomore.
-- Maxwell Smith and Jalen Whitlow, two quarterbacks who Towles couldn't beat out this year, will be returning juniors.
-- Drew Barker will be an incoming freshman, and the staff has indicated hopes of him becoming the next great Kentucky quarterback.
That means three players in the classes above and below Towles probably have better chances of starting in each of the next three years that Towles could play at UK.
Will Towles want to essentially bet on himself earning a spot over some combination of those three at some point in his career?
Or does he begin to consider looking elsewhere? Weigh in on the House of Blue.
