John Calipari carries a bit of recruiting cache even for UK's football team.
When UK hosted visits for two weekends in January, they attended two home games. They had lower-level seats, hung out in the recruiting room backstage and heard from Calipari, who touted what the university and athletics department meant.
"It helps a lot," tight ends coach Vince Marrow said. "Coach Calipari was a big influence on a lot of these guys."
That's because, even though he's in another sport, he's got a "national" brand, Marrow said.
"I mean, these parents are seeing this guy speaking to them right before the game," Marrow said. "It did a lot for recruits."
The basketball culture, Marrow said, doesn't detract from the appeal of playing football. It can show the full capacity for the Big Blue Nation's love.
Of course, Calipari was only a small influence. Barely significant when it came down to where a recruit wants to sign. But it added to the general vibe of their on-campus experience.
As for the other coach, Marrow said he's not far behind.
"At the end of the day, coach Stoops' name carries a lot," Marrow said. "He's going to be a great coach."
