A motivated Alex Poythress is a good Alex Poythress.

For himself. He had a disappointing freshman year, and things won't get any easier next season as he competes for playing time and a substantial role with top incoming freshman.

And for his team. When Kentucky win, Poythress (usually) had a good game, averaging 13.1 points and 7.0 rebounds. When Kentucky lost, Poythress was (usually) nowhere to be found, averaging 7.9 points and 4.3 rebounds.

Poythress sounded motivated following UK's loss in the NIT, saying that it would come down to the players to push themselves further next season.

"When everyone feels like giving up," Poythress said then, "just think about what happened this year."

And if that doesn't work? Think about what happened three weeks later. Following Louisville's national championship win Monday night, Poythress posted the following picture with the caption, "had to."
