Rimouski Oceanic blueliner Samuel Morin will have a date with QMJHL disciplinarian Raymond Bolduc after a major stick throwing incident after the final buzzer Wednesday.
Morin’s Oceanic fell 5-2 to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada at home on Wednesday night, and he decided he’d had enough. After the final buzzer, in a bout of frustration, Morin broke his stick in anger and threw the broken, nearly-intact shaft at the end boards from the near blue line.
One of the pieces of the stick hit a fan in a wheelchair who was leaving the arena, but thankfully, no one was hurt. Video of the incident is available here, from the TVA Sports website.
Morin was penalized with a two-minute minor and a game misconduct at 20:00 of the third period for “throwing a stick or piece of equipment”. The timing of the misconduct could come with an automatic one-game suspension.
Rimouski head coach and director of hockey operations Serge Beausoleil told TVA Sports that he fully expects a suspension to arguably his top defenceman.
“I’m sure there will be a suspension,” Beausoleil said Thursday. “We are waiting for the phone call [from Bolduc]. We aren’t okay with what [Morin] did. It’s unacceptable.”
Beausoleil added that there may be a team suspension for Morin as well as a league one.
The loss dropped Rimouski’s record to 29-14-3-4, one point behind the fourth-place Quebec Remparts in the league. The Oceanic don’t play until Saturday night, a home date with the Shawinigan Cataractes.
