Patrick staying on with Andretti Autosport

  • Print

Danica Patrick unveiled her splashy new car in New York’s Times Square, its bright green, black and orange color scheme right at home with the flashy billboards and lights above.

A car with fenders could be next for IndyCar’s most marketable star.

Patrick signed a three-year contract extension with Andretti Autosport on Monday, a deal that could pave the way for the open-wheel star’s desired foray into NASCAR.

“When there are more races on the schedule, my life almost feels more predictable,” Patrick said during a segment on Fox News. “I’d be excited about the challenge. We’ll see.”

Patrick and team owner Michael Andretti announced the deal with Andretti Autosport during a segment on “Good Morning America,” appearing together with her No. 7 GoDaddy.com Dallara-Honda.

The deal reportedly had been in the works for weeks, held up by Patrick’s previous sponsorship deal with Motorola and a change in ownership with her team.

Andretti Autosport finished its restructuring last week, changing its name from Andretti Green Racing after Michael Andretti purchased the team from Kim Green and Kevin Savoree, who have taken control of the promotions side of the company.

The IRL deal done, Patrick my be free to turn her attention to a NASCAR ride.

JR Motorsports appears to be the most likely suitor.

A deal to partner her on a limited Nationwide Series schedule with the team owned by Rick Hendrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. reportedly was in the final stages before the IRL deal was signed. There also have been rumors that Patrick will drive a handful of ARCA races.

JR Motorsports already has a sponsorship deal with GoDaddy.com for its No. 88 Chevrolet Nationwide car and announced in September that the Web giant will be the primary sponsor of Mark Martin’s No. 5 Sprint Cup car. Earlier Monday, an image of Patrick wearing a race suit with JR Motorsports and Chevy logos reportedly appeared briefly her Web site before being taken down.

“I know everyone wants to know that,” Patrick said on Fox News. “I love to drive. I love to race. If I got the chance to run both series, I’d love that. If we were announcing (NASCAR), we’d be here with two cars. We’ve been working on it.”

Patrick signed with the Andretti Autosport before the 2007 season and became the first woman to win an IndyCar Series race at the 2008 Japan Indy 300. She also was the first woman to lead the Indianapolis 500 (in 2005) and was third there this season on the way to finishing fifth in the IRL season championship.

Patrick’s new deal with runs through 2012.

“All of us at Andretti Autosport are looking forward to having Danica back with the team and are excited about working with (CEO) Bob Parsons and everyone at Go Daddy as the primary sponsor on Danica’s car,” Michael Andretti said in a statement.

The NASCAR season starts in February with the Daytona 500 and the 17-race IRL season begins March 14 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

If Patrick chooses to do both, she’ll certainly draw attention from sponsors with her crossover appeal. Some NASCAR drivers have warned about the difficulties of switching to stock cars, though most seem to be in favor of her joining the circuit.

Tony Stewart has won two Sprint Cup championships since leaving open-wheel racing, but Dario Franchitti went back to the IRL after an unsuccessful stint in NASCAR and three-time IndyCar champ Sam Hornish Jr. hasn’t sniffed a win since crossing over. Former Formula One star Juan Pablo Montoya won a race as a NASCAR rookie, but didn’t find consistent success until his third season.

Starting off in the Nationwide series rather than going straight to Sprint Cup might be a way for Patrick to ease that transition.

“I think we’d all welcome her, but I’m really happy for Michael and for his team,” said Sprint Cup driver John Andretti, Michael’s cousin. “That is great for them and maybe Danica can still try some of this stuff too and see what she thinks.”

You want to talk about drivers who don't win,NASCAR is filled with @#$%y drivers who can't win but still have good rides. There are only 5 or 6 drivers in NASCAR that could really have any luck in an open wheel INDY CAR. It dosn't take a rocket sientist to turn left all day. But it does take a skilled driver to get into a opened wheel car and win without rubbing at 220 mph. So nascar shut-up.

I hope that Danica stays with IRL and forgets about NASCAR. With NASCAR becoming to most boring sport since arm wrestling on the Wide World of Sports, it will take more than her to keep it from falling on its face. I love auto racing, but NASCAR has become NASGREED and ruined what was once a very interesting sport for the fans.

IRL, F-1, NASCAR, you name it ....... Money, top engineering, crew management, car setup, you name it ........ Did Mark Martin "magically" become a much better driver in the last two seasons? .... does it really matter who drives a Penske IRL car? ........ She's as good (if not better in alot of cases) as anyone who scores a ride with a dynasty ....... in any series ...... period! .... driver success has alot to do with the resources they are given .......... I'll leave it to you "experts" to decide the stuff about throttle control, feather breaking, line on track, eye/hand, reaction timing, instinctiveness, etc, etc, etc you know, driver qualities.

She has yet to do anything in Indy except drive off by herself in 10th place and move up as people racing each other crash out or run into problems. She's had 81 starts with a total of 1 win and 110 whopping laps led in her entire career. LMAO. There are people on inferior teams that have started fifty fewer races with more laps led and more wins. Give Sarah Fisher or Paul Tracy her ride and let her move to Nascar.

I have read most of the replies on this page. Most of you guys would hate a woman driver even if she won 30 races. I think it's a good idea that she try ARCA/Nationwise/Sprint cup on a limited basis. If she sucks or can't handle a stock car, she has the IRL.

At least she's trying before the season starts in IRL. If it doesn't work out, what has sh \e lost?

She is a afraid of NASCAR, that is why she is talking to JR about the "Nationwide" series, not the "Sprint Cup". Nationwide is clearly a step lower and JR doesn't want to drive it anymore, with all his other responsibilities. With Go Daddy being a sponsor of the 88 car (and their already substantial investment in Patrick - through sponsor dollars, commercials, etc.), it would seem to be a low risk fit...

Its just this simple if you can't win in the IRL you won't win in NASCAR.The IRL starts 20-25 cars and maybe 1/3 of those have a chance to win.NASCAR starts 43 cars and 1/2 have a chance to win.She would be in way over her head driving a much heavier and harder to drive car.Does anyone think she is a better driver than Dario Franchitti or Sam Hornish JR?Their Nascar careers have been nothing short of a disaster.

She is a a very consistant driver. She can win races with the right team and equipment. She has proved that and she would have won other races if bad luck hadn't happened. Top notch racer and great promoter for sponsors. Remember they also said a woman could not compete in the NHRA either. You go Danica.

left wondering how many of the people commenting on this have ever been in a racecar of any kind, let alone one capable of 230 + mph (yes even stockcars, without the restrictions would approach this number). i say You Go Danica!! get it while the getting is good!! run 2 or 3 or 4 series at once, if you are able! and maybe, you can kick some rednecks ass along the way. as far as her "lack" of bra size, i figure as long as she and her hubby are happy with em, why bother?

Once again, our BSNM (Biased Sports New Media) conveniently neglects to tell all the facts. Miss Sports Media Darling, Auto Racing Division and "auto racing's most marketable star," has hardly earned all this publicity for her racing feats. Her lifetime record is 1-80, was 0-17 last year and the last win came 19 months ago. Mrs. Almost-Should've-Could've-Would've, Auto Racing Division, has never won a race held in the USA, never won a 500-mile race anywhere and has more speeding tickets (two) than wins (one).

NASCAR does suck. It's the sports equivalent of American Idol, The Black Eyed Peas, NCIS, the Twilight movies, etc. All very popular things because of the complete lack of taste of the American public as a whole. All those things suck in terms of quality but it does not hurt their popularity. If you enjoy NASCAR then I'm happy for you but be realistic. The IRL has a huge number of problems but the worst race in the series is still much better than any NASCAR race. Enjoy the victory in popularity but I'll take quality any day.
