Woods was in Dubai last week to visit the site of his first golf course project and told the media assembled for the occasion that he is not sure if he will be back to defend his title in the Dubai Desert Classic. The tournament begins Jan. 27 2009, and Woods said he won't start hitting golf balls until the first of the year, so he might not be ready to play in a tournament that soon. Woods said recently that he will not rush his return, and all indications are that his primary focus will be to be ready for the Masters in April. You would think he might need a tournament or two of preparation after not playing since June, but that's what everybody figured before the U.S. Open and he wound up winning his 14th major championship on one good leg. Woods' course in Dubai will not be the only game in town since Colin Montgomerie and Ernie Els already have courses open in the city on the Persian Golf in the United Arab Emirates, and Greg Norman, Sergio Garcia, Pete Dye and Vijay Singh have plans on the drawing board for courses of their own. But knowing how the No. 1 golfer in the world does things, Tiger Woods Dubai figures to be something special. Woods said he drew inspiration for the course from those on the famed "sandbelt" near Melbourne, Australia. |
